Round 4 (Second Stage): Mornar Bar hands first defeat to Kozuv - Mar 20, 2013

There are only two more rounds left in the Second Stage in Balkan League. There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with defeat of the leader, extra overtimes and games ending by tiny margin.

Undefeated FYR Macedonian Kozuv (4-1) recorded its first loss on the court of third ranked Montenegrin Mornar Bar on Wednesday night. Visitors were defeated by Mornar Bar 87-81. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Kozuv. The hosts trailed by 8 points at the halftime before their 48-34 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. American point guard Hank Thorns (175-89, college: TCU) fired 16 points and 6 assists for the winners. Center Vukota Pavic (203-93) chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds. Center Aleksandar Shterjov (208-86, agency: Global Sports Plaza) produced 23 points and 7 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for lost side. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Mornar Bar maintains third position in Group D with 2-3 record having seven points less than leader Levski Sofia. Kozuv at the other side still keeps top place with one game lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

The best stats of 4th round was 43 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 11 assists by Aleksandar Kostoski of Kumanovo.

First Six
Teodo Tivat - Galil Gilboa 82-92

There was no surprise when 6th ranked Montenegrin Teodo Tivat (2-6) was defeated at home by second ranked Israeli Galil Gilboa (6-3) 92-82 on Wednesday. The guests trailed by 5 points at the halftime before their 41-26 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Galil Gilboa shot 64.3 percent from the field. American forward Mitchell Watt (208-89, college: Buffalo) fired 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. point guard Nimrod Tishman (197-91) chipped in 14 points and 6 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Five Galil Gilboa players scored in double figures. Center Aleksandar Radulovic (207-84, agency: BBEH Cokrlija) produced 20 points and 7 rebounds and guard Srdjan Subotic (195-88) added 14 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. Teodo Tivat's coach Slobodan Savovic rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Galil Gilboa have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain second position in Group C with 6-3 record having just -1 point less than leader Levski Sofia. Teodo Tivat lost fourth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom place with six games lost. Galil Gilboa will have a break next round. Teodo Tivat will play on the road against Kumanovo 2009 (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Kumanovo - Rilski Sportist 114-117 OT

Rilski Sportist made a decisive step towards Final Four stage beating Kumanovo in overtime drama. A.Caloiaro notched 23 points and 8 rebounds to pace the Bulgarian team. Terry Smith added 22 points, while Hristo Zahariev contributed 20 points for the visitors. A.Kostoski fired game-high 43 points for Kumanovo. Uros Lukovic netted 23 points and grabbed 13 boards in the losing effort.

Levski Sofia - Kavala 88-73

No shocking result in a game when first ranked Bulgarian Levski Sofia (6-2) defeated at home 5th ranked Greek Kavala (3-6) 88-73 on Tuesday. The game was mostly controlled by Levski Sofia. Kavala was better in fourth quarter 25-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Levski Sofia forced 21 Kavala turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Power forward Stefan Georgiev (206-78) fired 20 points (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. Pavel Ivanov (200-88) chipped in 12 points and 4 assists. Scottish-Nigerian Kieron Achara (208-83, college: Duquesne, agency: Two Points) produced 19 points and 7 rebounds and forward Sotirios Manolopoulos (208-87) added 18 points respectively for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Levski Sofia have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain first position in Group C with 6-2 record. Kavala lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with six games lost. Levski Sofia will face Rilski Sportist (#3) in Samokov in the next round, which may be the game of the day.

There was a minor upset in Slavonski Brod where much higher ranked Croatian Djuro Djakovic (3-2) was edged by fourth ranked Serbian OKK Beograd (1-4) 69-68 on Tuesday. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 22-11. But Djuro Djakovic won second period 20-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Stanoje Knezevic (202-89) fired 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Bosnian-Serbian forward Nikola Jeftic (202-85) chipped in 15 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Toni Brnas (201-91) produced 25 points and 8 rebounds and Croatian swingman Marko Batina (198-86) added 20 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. OKK Beograd maintains fourth position in Group D with 1-4 record. Loser Djuro Djakovic keeps the second place with two games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
