BBL set for format changes and expansion - Jul 10, 2013

The Baltic Basketball League (BBL) will enter the 10th anniversary season with some adjustments to its own competition system. Having drawn plenty of interest both from previous participants and new teams, the league is set up to 24. Last year, clubs from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and one guest team from Kazakhstan competed in the BBL. For the upcoming season, there is a high possibility of the geography of the league expanding to include teams from Finland and Sweden, as well as extending the co-operation with clubs from Kazakhstan. The Lithuanian Basketball Leagues decision to play four rounds resulted in us having to make modifications in the BBL competition system. In the regular season, teams will play in four groups with six clubs in each. The difference from last year is that there wont be a Top 16 round. Playoffs will commence immediately after the regular season. If we had to play the full system, there simply would be too many games, said the BBL director Romualdas Brazauskas. The four best teams in each group will qualify for the BBL Playoffs, which will begin with Eight-finals and then subsequently proceed to Quarter-finals, Semi-finals before reaching the BBL Finals. Throughout all stages of the playoffs, teams will play two games home and away, with the team with the best cumulative score advancing to the next round. The deadline for teams to submit their applications to compete in the 2013/14 BBL season is August 20th, after which the competition system can be confirmed. Even before the start of the BBL Regular Season, the Baltic basketball season will begin with four teams stepping on the floor to compete in the BBL Cup 2013, which will be held in the end of September.
