Division II - Round Twenty-Eight

Essor Charleroi (Spirou B) vs. Excelsior Brussels: 67-69 (played on 2013-03-27)

The first and second quarters were in favour of Excelsior led by Jeroen Van Haevermaet (192-SG-86) and Gregory De Pooter (196-F-84) who respectively scored 11 and 10 points in the first 20 minutes of this game. Step by step, the young Essor squad mainly helped by hardworking strong men Boris Penninck (202-C-88) and Troy Gottselig (203-F-87) came back into the game and eventually turned this game into a thriller. They first came back to a one-point deficit (61-62) after 35 minutes. They reached this very same deficit again (67-68) with just 30 seconds left before the final buzzer. With only 10 seconds remaining in the game, Excel's shooter Jeroen Van Haevermaet hit one of his two free-throw attempts and Essor could not convert a last possession. Also to be mentioned, Kanefu "Sam" Semijejero (195-PF-77) grabbed 5 crucial defensive rebounds for the Brussels' team in the last quarter.
Score evolution: 20-25, 33-48, 51-60 and 67-69.
Best scorers:
Essor: Y. Siegwarth 3, A. Lambot 8, T. Gottselig 14, J. Stas 5, B. Penninck 25, M. Steenberghs 2, A. Eyenga 10.
Excelsior: E. Mampuya 8, X. Collette 3, N. Verrept 9, M. Depuydt 5, J. Van Haevermaet 21, G. De Pooter 13, L. Maesfrancx 2, J. De Schepper 1, R. Oveneke 5, S. Semijejero 2.

Cuva Houthalen vs. Gent Dragons: 77-70

The Dragons were always well in the race and, mainly thanks to Leigh Enobakhare (206-C-86, agency: Court Side), Brian Heinle (205-F-78, agency: Court Side, college: CS Northridge) and Robin Spaens (180-PG-92). In the fourth quarter, the scoreboard showed 71-68 with a bit more than two minutes to go. Cuva of coach Brian Lynch had started the game rather well: the score evolved from 11-9 to 20-9 in the first quarter, just before the Dragons' reaction in the final minute of this quarter. Nevertheless, thanks to this important win and the loss of Kangoeroes Boom in CEP Fleurus, Cuva becomes the only leader in Division II. Other news: Cuva center Odell Hodge (204-C/F-73, college: ODU) will leave the team next season (he will play for Hasselt) and 27-year-old playmaker Martijn Hendrix (183-G-86) has signed with Cuva for the 2013-14 season.
Score evolution: 23-16, 44-44, 61-59 and 77-70.

Port of Antwerp Giants II vs. Excelsior Brussels: 89-73

With a poor 1/11 from three-point range, Excelsior could not deserve a better result in this game played on Sunday 2013-03-31. Nevertheless, the first half remained a close one. Despite many efforts by Excelsior's experienced center Emma Mampuya (200-F/C-79, agency: Promotex) in offense, the young Giants of Luc Smout managed to have a strong third quarter and eventually won the game. Special mention again to Dennis Donkor (194-G/F-91, agency: Three Eye Sports) for his great offensive performance with 26 points for the Giants II.
Score evolution: 23-20, 43-39, 66-52 and 89-73.
Best scorers:
Giants II: P. Peeters 7, A. Rojas Palma 14, R. Bogaerts 14, D. Donkor 26, Yo. Schoepen 8, M. Rademakers 14, Ya. Schoepen 4, Kanda 2.
Excelsior: E. Mampuya 23, X. Collette 5, N. Verrept 2, M. Depuydt 6, J. Van Haevermaet 5, G. De Pooter 14, R. Oveneke 12, S. Semijejero 6.

BBC Haantjes Oudenaarde vs. Sint-Jan Antwerp: 95-83

After a very close game during the first three quarters, Jantje scorer Senne Geukens (190-G-83) suddenly felt lonely. The Haantjes, led by Gunnar Delepeleire (179-PG-88) who had great assists, hit crucial baskets in the final minutes of the game. Top center Mikhail Linskens (213-C-87, agency: R.H.Consultancy, college: Wyoming) and great shooter Jean Salumu (193-F-90, double affiliation with 2013 Belgian Cup winner BC Oostende) especially made the difference by converting several important baskets for the home team through the whole game.
Score evolution: 24-25, 41-40, 66-66 and 95-83.
Best scorers:
Haantjes: M. Linskens 33, J. Salumu 23.
Sint-Jan: V. Haerbos 8, B. Hartshorne 12, V. Verbeeck 2, B. Raes 3, N. El Khounchar 5, A. Druwez 12, S. Geukens 20, L. Anthonis 5, S. Kesteloot 4, M. Brown 12.

BasKet Tongeren vs. Gembo BBC: 105-120

Thanks to this fantastic win away in BK Tongeren, Gembo secured its place in the Division II play-offs. After having scored 119 points in Houthalen, the men of coach Stefan Sappenberghs have now scored 120 points in Tongeren. Nick Celis (194-G-88), Domien Loubry (186-G-85), Laurens Jansen (200-C-83) and their mates are pretty inspired when they travel to Province Limburg. Despite stopping all activities at the end of the season, BK Tongeren has had a good game (and especially a great first quarter). See free highlights on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFAJTLYyTcE&list=UUoSEPiDqNhOjhQW7eAC-isQ&index=6.
Another news from Limburg filtered last week: BK Tongeren's experienced player Joeri Moonen (205-F-84) (205-F-84) is now officially hired by CEP Fleurus for the 2013-14 season.
Score evolution: 29-23, 51-62, 83-88 and 105-120.
Best scorers:
BK Tongeren: N/A
Gembo: N. Celis 26 , D. Loubry 35, T. Goethaert 5, A. Goetgeluck 6, E. Van Aken 6, W. Lemaire 10, M. Swinnen 4, L. Jansen 18, P. Van Rillaer 10.

Bent Schoenen Waregem vs. Point Chaud Sprimont: 73-62

See free highlights on Focus-WTV.tv: http://www.focus-wtv.tv/video/waregem-wint-van-sprimont.
Belgian point guard Bram Van Hulle (187-G/F-83) signed a contract with Bent Schoenen Waregem for the 2013-14 season.
Score evolution: 20-19, 38-28, 56-47 and 73-62.
Best scorers:
BS Waregem: A. Steinbach 19, S. Naudts 5, O. Foucart 11, A. Gueye 20, S. D'Hondt 4, T. Foucart 7, L. Loontiens 5, T. Delmulle 4.
PC Sprimont: N/A

Sint-Niklase Condors vs. Union Mons Hainaut II: 92-73

Thanks to this success, the Condors of coach Steve Ibens remain candidates to the play-offs. The young Foxes will finish the regular season in freewheeling. The Foxes' coach Patrick Verdun has reached an agreement with CEP Fleurus for next season.

Port of Antwerp Giants II vs. Gent Dragons: 65-87

Despite a first three-pointer for the Giants who opened the score, the Dragons with a fantastic Leigh Enobakhare managed to keep the lead all the way. The young Giants came closer and closer early in the second half (48-53 on the scoreboard) but were never able to overpass the Dragons. Leigh Enobakhare scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the visitors in this game.
Score evolution: 21-27, 40-50, 53-69 and 65-87.
Best scorers:
Giants II: N/A
Dragons: B. Heinle 11, R. Spaens 14, F. Lait 10, T. Van De Vondel 17, M. Van Gelder 8, M. Detiege 6, C. Thsimuanga 2, L. Enobakhare 20.

CEP Fleurus vs. Kangoeroes Boom: 100-87

Waw! In the first half, the Kangoeroes of coach Tom Poppe gave absolutely no chance to their hosts: they were leading by 14 points at the half. They even had a 17-point lead at some point in this game. Mitchel Gorremans (191-G/F-85), a former CEP F player, and Sebastien Bellin (205-C-78, agency: Prossin Sports Management Inc., college: Oakland), who will eventually not play for CEP F next season (contrarily to what had previously been announced on the CEP F and Eurobasket.com websites), were particularly efficient for the visitors. The third and fourth quarters looked quite different and the men of coach Paul Vervaeck and President Giovanni Mureddu were really on fire. They ended with +13 and Kevin Jonniaux (198-G-83) was the key player for the hosts. Other CEP F players had an excellent second half: Christian Ilongo (194-F-85, agency: Promotex), Louis Hazard (199-F-94) and Thomas Bauwens (192-F-86). Tarick Johnson (192-G/F-81, agency: R.H.Consultancy, college: Campbell) was quite disappointing for the visitors: he scored only two points.

Score evolution: 16-26, 41-55, 66-74 and 100-87.

Division II - Round Twenty-Nine

Essor Charleroi (Spirou B) vs. Port of Antwerp Giants II: 84-64

These two teams, also involved in the BDL-Belgian Development League, played this game to avoid the last rank in Division II. The Spirou B team, although they had lost Boris Penninck who now plays for RBC Verviers Pepinster in the Ethias League (the Spirou staff, via one of their companies --see www.zelos.be-- involved in sports management, organizations and events, actually managed to save RBC Verviers Pepinster) finished the season strongly and defeated their opponents by 20 points last Sunday.

Gembo BBC vs. CEP Fleurus: 119-80

Once again, Gembo scored more than 100 points in a game. Thanks to an excellent first quarter and a fantastic full court press by the men of coach Stefan "Sappe" Sappenberghs, Gembo quickly reached a 22-point lead. The visitors, under the lead of Christian Ilongo, Amaury Marion (196-F-91) and Louis Hazard, tried to stay close before the half. Despite the CEPmen's efforts, the Gembo guys kept cruising and left no chance to their opponents. +39 after 40 minutes and following some great three-pointers or great assists by an unstoppable Domien Loubry, the local star! Gembo definitely remains in the race to defend its title. Also to be mention: Nick Celis and Domien Loubry will most probably leave BBC Gembo at the end of the season, they could sign with Excelsior Brussels (an Ethias League candidate) for the 2013-14 season. That is at least what some Belgian media and press have announced last week. On the other side, the arrivals of Joeri Moonen and Nicolas Tsasa (G-88) have been anounced on the CEP Fleurus' website. Kevin Jonniaux and Christian Ilongo should also stay with the historic club of the Hainaut Province next season. Free game highlights on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTAHbatVytg&list=UUoSEPiDqNhOjhQW7eAC-isQ&index=1.
Score evolution: 35-13, 55-41, 81-63 and 119-80.
Best scorers:
Gembo: D. Loubry 30.
CEP F: A. Marion 11, K. Jonniaux 2, J. Vanesse 2, R. Van Den Berghe 7, T. Bauwens 19, L. Hazard 21, S. Muric 2, C. Ilongo 16.

Cuva Houthalen vs. BBC Haantjes Oudenaarde: 96-78

The MVP of the game was Cuva's US player Brian Tracey (195-F-88, college: Bentley) who had 35 points and 14 points in this game. A fantastic double double! With this new win, Cuva keeps the first rank and will travel to CEP Fleurus next Friday to secure the pole position in the last round of the 2012-13 Division II regular season.
Best scorers:
Cuva: B. Tracey 35.
Haantjes: N/A

Sint-Jan Antwerp vs. Bent Schoenen Waregem: 75-84

In the race for the play-offs, Sint-Jan's loss of last weekend is quite surprising. The Jantjes missed their third quarter (lost 15-27) and were always chasing afterwards. Special mentions to Arne Steinbach (182-PG-92, agency: Court Side) and Thomas Foucart (195-F-84) who had respectively 19 and 21 points each for BS Waregem at the Arenahal in Deurne last weekend. The reaction of Sint-Jan's playmaker Vinnie Haerbos (180-PG-90) came too late. Also a great news filtered last week: Sint-Jan and neighbouring club Mercurius have signed a cooperation agreement for the future.
Score evolution: 18-19, 33-31, 48-58 and 75-84.
Best scorers:
Sint-Jan: V. Haerbos 15, B. Hartshorne 16, M. Goethaert 2, A. Druwez 14, S. Geukens 9, L. Anthonis 2, S. Kesteloot 2, P. Smulders 4, M. Brown 8.
BS Waregem: A. Steinbach 19, T. Foucart 21, O. Foucart 15, L. Loontiens 8, B. Samaey 13, S. Naudts 5, T. Bruyneel 3.

Kangoeroes Boom vs. Union Mons Hainaut II: 122-80

The Kangoeroes never had any doubts in this game. The strong men of Boom scored more than 120 points in this very offensive game. The home team of coach Tom Poppe proved that they had very well recovered after their loss of last week in CEP Fleurus.

Sint-Niklase Condors vs. BasKet Tongeren: 77-93

With the win of BK Tongeren, neighbouring Cuva Houthalen of Province Limburg can expect an excellent spot for the play-off race.

Point Chaud Sprimont vs. Excelsior Brussels: 86-68

Very poor second quarter by the visitors in Sprimont last Friday night. The Greens of coach Pascal Horrion had an excellent first half and literally left no chance to their guests.
Score evolution: 21-17, 47-26, 64-42 and 86-68.
Best scorers:
PC Sprimont: N/A
Excelsior: E. Mampuya 10, X. Collette 5, N. Verrept 12, M. Depuydt 9, J. Van Haevermaet 18, G. De Pooter 2, R. Oveneke 4, S. Semijejero 8.

Point Chaud Sprimont vs. Gent Dragons: 69-71

This game had been postponed due to bad weather and rescheduled last Sunday afternoon. The local supporters were ready to party when Dragon playmaker Faycal Lait (190-G-88, agency: Promotex) proved that a game is never over before the final buzzer. The Gentenaar hit great shots in the last quarter and the scoreboard showed 69-69 with just a few seconds left. With only 6 seconds on the clock, Brian Heinle hit a jumper and offered the win to the Dragons.
Score evolution: 19-18, 32-27, 56-47 and 69-71.
