Earl Rowland's triple-double lands him Player of the Week award among Bulgarians playing currently abroad - Apr 2, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Bulgarians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is former international guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA, currently plays in Latvia). He led VEF Riga to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Jelgava (13-17) crushing them 119-83 in the Latvian LBL in Saturday night's game. Rowland had a triple-double by scoring 11 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and passing 10 assists in 31 minutes on the court. VEF Riga (14-1) is placed fourth in the LBL. It was his team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Rowland's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 12.5ppg, 4.4rpg, 6.8apg, 1.8spg, 2FGP: 47.1% and FT: 76.5% in the 11 games he played so far. Rowland is a naturalized American. He played for the Bulgarian senior national team two years ago. Strangely Rowland has never played in Bulgaria.

   #2. Second place goes to former international guard Earl Calloway (191-83, college: Indiana, currently plays in Spain). He contributed to an Unicaja Malaga's surprising victory against the second-ranked Caja Laboral (20-7) crushing them 93-72 in the Spanish ACB last Sunday. Calloway scored 10 points and added 4 assists. Unicaja Malaga (14-13) is placed ninth in the ACB. This season Calloway averages: 6.8ppg, 3.2rpg, 2.1apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 49.2%, 3FGP: 28.3% and FT: 82.8%. He is a naturalized American. Calloway played for the Bulgarian national team in 2010. Apparently he has never played in Bulgaria.

   #3. The Bulgarian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Hristo Nikolov (200-85, currently plays in Romania). Nikolov led U-Mobitelco to a victory over the 14th-ranked Oradea (0-27) 84-75 in the Romanian Liga Nationala in Thursday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Nikolov scored 24 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 40 minutes. CS U-Mobitelco Cluj Napoca (19-10) is placed seventh in the Liga Nationala. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. This year Nikolov has relatively solid stats: 14.1ppg, 3.9rpg, 2.9apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 60.7%(111-183), 3FGP: 35.2% and FT: 69.4% in the 28 games. He is also a member of the Bulgarian senior national team.

   #4. An experienced guard Roderick Blakney (184-76, college: S.Carolina St., currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB could not help Cajasol (9-18) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Blakney's very good performance Cajasol was defeated 84-74 on the road by the leading Real Madrid. He was the top scorer with 17 points. Blakney's overall stats this season are: 6.9ppg, 1.1rpg and 2.3apg. He is a naturalized American. Blakney used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2007. Interesting that he has never played in Bulgaria.

   #5. International small forward Filip Videnov (196-80, agency: Alti Sport, college: W.Kentucky, currently plays in Turkey) was the main contributor in an Olin Edirne's victory against the ninth-ranked Erdemir (9-15) crushing them 90-53 in the Turkish TBL on Saturday night. Videnov was the best player in that game. He scored 22 points, made 4 passes and 3 steals in 32 minutes. Olin Edirne Basketball (6-18) is placed 14th in the TBL. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. Videnov has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 17.1ppg, 3.8rpg and 3.0apg in the nine games. Videnov plays currently for the Bulgarian national team.

Forward Kaloyan Ivanov (205-86, currently plays in Italy) was the major contributor in a Air Avellino's shocking victory against the fourth-ranked Montepaschi Siena (15-10) 75-70 in the Italian SerieA in Monday night's game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 10 rebounds. Ivanov also added and 3 steals. Sidigas Avellino (10-14) is placed tenth in the SerieA. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Ivanov has reliable stats this season: 12.0ppg, 9.0rpg and 1.8spg. He is a former international player as he played for the Bulgarian senior team two years ago.

   #7. International shooting guard Ivan Lilov (196-88, currently plays in Romania) contributed to an easy victory against the tenth-ranked Craiova (11-16) crushing them 101-66 in the Romanian Liga Nationala last Thursday. Lilov scored 8 points, grabbed 7 boards, passed 5 assists and added 4 steals in 20 minutes. CS Gaz Metan Medias (19-10) is placed fifth in the Liga Nationala. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. Lilov's stats this year are: 10.1ppg, 3.2rpg, 2.4apg and 1.7spg in the 14 games. He is also Bulgarian national team player.

   #8. Center Jared Homan (206-83, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Germany) was not able to help Bayern Muenchen (18-11) in their game against Artland Dragons (16-12) in the German BBL. Homan scored 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. But Bayern Muenchen was defeated 70-66 in Quakenbrueck by the lower-ranked Artland Dragons (#6). Homan's overall stats this season are: 10.0ppg and 5.9rpg. He is a naturalized American. Homan used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2010. However he has never played in Bulgaria.

Former international guard Aleksandar Gruev (187-83, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in Romania), who plays in the Romanian Liga Nationala was not able to secure a victory for CSU Sibiu (14-15) in their last game. Despite Gruev's very good performance CSU Sibiu lost 74-88 at home to the lower-ranked (#11) Targu Mures. He was the top scorer with 25 points. Gruev also added 3 assists in 35 minutes. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. Gruev averaged so far 14.7ppg, 2.5rpg and 4.5apg in the 27 games. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team two years ago.

Power forward Cedric Simmons (206-86, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Enel Brindisi (10-15) in their game against Trenkwalder RE (14-11) in the Italian SerieA. Simmons recorded 7 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. Enel Brindisi was defeated 84-69 on their home court in Brindisi by the higher-ranked Trenkwalder RE (#7). It was Enel Brindisi's sixth consecutive loss in a row. Simmons' overall stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 6.2rpg and 1.2bpg. He is a naturalized American. Simmons is an international player who is currently on the senior Bulgarian National Team roster.

   #11. Former international power forward Dejan Ivanov (205-86, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Lithuania) managed to help Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius in a victory against the closely-ranked Pieno Zvaigzdes 85-69 in the Lithuanian LKL on Saturday night. Ivanov scored only 1 points in 8 minutes on the court. This year Ivanov's overall stats are: 6.6ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.4apg in the nine games. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team two years ago.

   #12. Former international center Krum Doychinov (206-86, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Greece) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Irakleio 70-55 in the Greek A2 (second division) in Saturday night's game. Doychinov recorded 9 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. Doychinov is currently first on the league's list of best blockers. His total stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.3apg and 1.1bpg. Doychinov used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2010.

   #13. International forward Aleksandar Georgiev (203-90, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Assignia Manresa in their game against Asefa Estudiantes in the Spanish ACB. He cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. Georgiev scored only 3 points in 13 minutes. His team lost 75-90. This year Georgiev's total stats are: 4.6ppg and 2.1rpg in the 27 games. He is also Bulgarian national team player.

   #14. Former U20 international guard Georgi Sirakov (186-92, also represented by Interperformances, currently plays in Italy) contributed to a Mazzeo San Severo's shocking victory against the seventh-ranked Torino 67-58 in the Italian Nazionale A (third division) on Wednesday night. Sirakov recorded 5 points. This season he averages only 7.7ppg. Sirakov used to play for the Bulgarian U20 national team back in 2011.


The list of other players, who all have Bulgarian passport but never been selected to any of Bulgarian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Willie Deane (188-PG-80, agency: Higher Vision Sports, college: Purdue, currently plays in Ukraine), who plays in the Ukrainian Superleague could not help one of league's weakest teams Khimik (24-14) in their last game. Despite Deane's good performance Khimik lost 79-91 on the road to the higher-ranked (#3) Azovmash. He had a double-double by scoring 14 points and making 13 passes in 29 minutes. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Deane has relatively solid stats: 12.7ppg, 2.8rpg, 6.1apg and 1.1spg in the 36 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Deane used to play for PBC Lukoil Akademik Sophia in Bulgarian league.

   #2. Pero Antic (210-F-82, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Euroleague) contributed to Olympiacos' victory against the seventh-ranked Fenerbahce Ulker (7-16) 78-73 in the Euroleague in Friday night's game. He recorded 9 points. Olympiacos S.F.P. Pireus (16-7) is placed third in group F. Antic's team will play only one more game in the Euroleague Top 16. And now that game is very crucial. Antic's overall stats this season are: 6.1ppg and 3.4rpg. He has a dual citizenship: FYR Macedonian and Bulgarian.

   #3. Kee Kee Clark (180-PG-84, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Italy) led Umana Venezia to a victory over the closely-ranked Vanoli Cremona (10-15) 80-74 in the Italian SerieA last Monday. Clark was MVP of the game. He recorded 19 points in 30 minutes. Umana Reyer Venezia (13-12) is placed eighth in the SerieA. This year Clark has relatively solid stats: 13.8ppg, 1.9rpg and 2.3apg in the 21 games. He is a naturalized American. Interesting that Clark has never played in Bulgaria.

   #4. Ilian Evtimov (201-F-83, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in France) contributed to a 2-point Chalon/Saor's victory against the 14th-ranked Sluc Nancy (8-17) 77-75 in the French ProA on Saturday night. He recorded 9 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. ES Chalon-Sur-Saone (17-8) is placed third in the ProA. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This season Evtimov has relatively solid stats: 10.5ppg, 3.6rpg, 1.9apg and 1.2spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Bulgarian and French.

Talented Nikolay Nikolov (201-SF-97) had an amazing evening in the last round for UE Varna and that's him to receive a Eurobasket.com Division A Player of the Week award for round 1. The 20-year old had the game-high 26 points adding eight rebounds and two assists for UE Varna in his team's victory, helping them to outclass, the league's bottom-ranked team Shumen (#5, 0-1) with 31-point margin 98-67. The Regular Season in Division A just started. The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The biggest surprise of round 1 in Division A took place in Troyan where host Chavdar (1-0) beat Beroe-2 (0-1) 97-84 on Sunday evening. Chavdar made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. Forward Lubomir Lilov (200-87) fired a double-double by scoring 23 points and 10 rebounds for the winners.
