Here is the weekly review of the top performing Bulgarian players, who play currently abroad.


Ibrahim Jaaber

   #1. This week's number one is former international point guard Ibrahim Jaaber (187-84, college: Pennsylvania, currently plays in Iran), who plays in the Iranian Superleague. Jaaber could not help Petrochimi (17-1) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite his very good performance the league leader Petrochimi was badly defeated 106-89 at home by the lower-ranked Mahram (#3). Jaaber was the top scorer with 22 points. He also added 5 rebounds and dished 4 assists. This season Jaaber averages: 6.5ppg, 3.1rpg, 2FGP: 56.4%(22-39), 3FGP: 28.9% and FT: 73.0%. He is a naturalized American. Jaaber played for the Bulgarian senior national team four years ago. Strangely he has never played in Bulgaria.

Earl Calloway

   #2. Second place goes to former international guard Earl Calloway (191-83, college: Indiana, currently plays in Euroleague). He contributed to a 3-point Unicaja Malaga's victory against the second-ranked Real Madrid (9-2) 77-74 in the Euroleague last Friday. Calloway scored 9 points in 26 minutes. Unicaja Malaga (6-5) is placed fifth in group E. There are only three games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be critical. This year Calloway's overall stats are: 9.4ppg, 3.0rpg, 2.3apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 55.6%(35-63), 3FGP: 45.5%(35-77) and FT: 73.3% in the 21 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Calloway played for the Bulgarian national team in 2010. Apparently he has never played in Bulgaria.

   #3. The Bulgarian player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced international small forward Filip Videnov (196-80, agency: Alti Sport, college: W.Kentucky, currently plays in Turkey), who plays in the Turkish TBL. Videnov was not able to help Olin Edirne (5-17) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance Olin Edirne was edged 83-82 on the road by the much higher-ranked Anadolu Efes (#4). Videnov was the second best scorer with 19 points. He also added 4 passes. Videnov has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 16.7ppg, 3.6rpg, 3.0apg, 2FGP: 63.2%(24-38), 3FGP: 48.8%(20-41). Videnov is also a member of the Bulgarian senior national team.

Aleksandar Gruev

   #4. Guard Aleksandar Gruev (187-83, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in Romania) led CSU Sibiu to a victory over the closely-ranked Giurgiu (9-18) 80-72 in the Romanian Liga Nationala in Thursday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Gruev scored 30 points (!!!), had 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 37 minutes. CSU Atlassib Sibiu (13-14) is placed tenth in the Liga Nationala. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Gruev is currently seventh on the league's list of best passers with 4.6apg. He also averaged so far 14.4ppg and 2.5rpg in the 25 games. Gruev used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2011.

   #5. International power forward Cedric Simmons (206-86, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian SerieA was not able to secure a victory for Enel Brindisi (10-13) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance Enel Brindisi was defeated 93-86 in Montegranaro by the lower-ranked Sutor (#14). Simmons scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Simmons' total stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 6.3rpg and 1.2bpg. He is a naturalized American. Simmons plays currently for the Bulgarian national team. Interesting that he has never played in Bulgaria.

   #6. Shooting guard Ivan Lilov (196-88, currently plays in Romania) couldn't help Gaz Metan (18-9) in their game against Timisoara (18-9) in the Romanian Liga Nationala, despite his very good performance on Thursday night. Lilov scored 13 points and added 3 assists in 35 minutes. But Gaz Metan lost 80-86 on the opponent's court to the lower-ranked (#6) Timisoara. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. This year Lilov's total stats are: 9.7ppg, 3.1rpg, 2.3apg and 1.6spg in the 12 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Bulgarian National Team roster.

   #7. Former international center Jared Homan (206-83, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Germany) couldn't help Bayern Muenchen (18-10) in their game against TBB Trier (13-13) in the German BBL. Homan recorded 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. But Bayern Muenchen was defeated 90-84 in Trier by the much lower-ranked TBB Trier (#10). Homan has averaged so far 10.0ppg, 5.8rpg and 1.1apg. He is a naturalized American. Homan used to play for the Bulgarian national team three years ago. However he has never played in Bulgaria.

Power forward Hristo Nikolov (200-85, currently plays in Romania) contributed to U-Mobitelco's victory against the closely-ranked Rovinari (13-14) 86-74 in the Romanian Liga Nationala on Thursday night. Nikolov scored 8 points and added 5 assists. CS U-Mobitelco Cluj Napoca (18-9) is placed seventh in the Liga Nationala. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be extremely important. Nikolov has relatively good stats this season: 14.2ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.9apg and 1.7spg. He plays currently for the Bulgarian national team.

Former international guard Roderick Blakney (184-76, college: S.Carolina St., currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Cajasol (9-16) in their game against G.Canaria 2014 (15-10) in the Spanish ACB. Blakney recorded only 4 points and had 3 steals in 13 minutes. Cajasol was badly defeated 66-49 in Las Palmas by the much higher-ranked (#6) G.Canaria 2014. Blakney has averaged so far 6.0ppg, 1.1rpg and 2.4apg in the 14 games. He is a naturalized American. Blakney used to play for the Bulgarian national team six years ago.

   #10. Forward Kaloyan Ivanov (205-86, currently plays in Italy) managed to help Sidigas Avellino in a victory against the league outsider Angelico Biella (5-18) 77-72 in the Italian SerieA last Sunday. He scored only 2 points in 10 minutes. Sidigas Avellino (8-14) is placed 12th in the SerieA. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This year Ivanov has relatively solid stats: 11.7ppg, 8.9rpg and 1.7spg in the 10 games. He is a former international player as two years ago he still played for the Bulgarian senior national team.

   #11. Former international power forward Vassil Evtimov (208-77, college: N.Carolina, currently plays in France) couldn't help Limoges CSP Elite in their game against Chalon/Saor in the French ProA. Evtimov cannot count Tuesday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points. His team was edged 74-71. This season Evtimov averages just 1.0ppg. He used to play for the Bulgarian national team four years ago.

   #12. Former international center Krum Doychinov (206-86, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Greece) contributed to OFI's surprising victory against the second-ranked Filathlitikos 79-68 in the Greek A2 (second division) last Saturday. Doychinov scored only 2 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Doychinov is ranked second on the list of the best blockers in the league. He has averaged so far 8.8ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.3apg and 1.1bpg. Doychinov used to play for the Bulgarian national team back in 2010.


The list of other players, who all have Bulgarian passport but never been selected to any of Bulgarian national teams:

   #1. Pero Antic (210-F-82, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Greece) led Olympiacos to a victory over the ninth-ranked Kolossos (6-14) 70-65 in the Greek A1 in Sunday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Antic scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 25 minutes. Olympiacos S.F.P. Pireus (19-1) is placed first in the A1. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. This year Antic averages: 6.5ppg and 3.1rpg in the 17 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: FYR Macedonian and Bulgarian.

   #2. Experienced Willie Deane (188-PG-80, agency: Higher Vision Sports, college: Purdue, currently plays in EuroChallenge), who plays in Ukraine could not help Khimik (3-3) in their last game. Despite Deane's very good performance the second-placed Khimik lost 74-82 on the road to the leading EWE Baskets in the group K of EuroChallenge. He was the top scorer with 19 points in 35 minutes. Deane is ranked fifth on the list of the best passers in the league with 4.8apg. This year his other stats are: 14.6ppg and 1.5rpg in the 14 games. Deane is a naturalized American. He used to play for PBC Lukoil Akademik Sophia in Bulgarian league.

   #3. Kee Kee Clark (180-PG-84, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian SerieA was not able to help Umana Venezia (11-12) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Clark's very good performance Umana Venezia was defeated 74-69 in Roma by the higher-ranked Lottomatica (#3). He was the top scorer with 22 points. Clark has relatively good stats this season: 13.7ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.3apg. He is a naturalized American. Apparently Clark has never played in Bulgaria.

   #4. Ilian Evtimov (201-F-83, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in France) managed to help ES Chalon-Sur-Saone in a 3-point victoryagainst the 11th-ranked Limoges CSP Elite (4-15) 74-71 in the French ProA last Tuesday. Evtimov scored 5 points in 36 minutes. ES Chalon-Sur-Saone (15-8) is placed third in the ProA. Evtimov has relatively good stats this year: 10.8ppg, 3.7rpg, 1.8apg and 1.2spg in the 18 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Bulgarian and French.

   #5. Galin Mihaylov (189-G-80, currently plays in Norway) contributed to Tromso's victory against the third-ranked Froya Basket 91-84 in the Norwegian BLNO last Saturday. Mihaylov recorded 16 points. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Playoffs. Tromso Storm (20-4) is placed first. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. It's Mihaylov's seventh season with the team. This year he has relatively solid stats: 10.1ppg, 1.9rpg and 3.1apg.

   #6. Dimitar Karadzovski (190-G-84, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in Balkan League) was not able to secure a victory for Kozuv in their game against Mornar Bar in the Balkan League. Karadzovski recorded 9 points and added 3 passes in 27 minutes. His team lost 81-87. He has averaged so far 9.8ppg, 2.9rpg, 3.6apg and 1.2spg in the 10 games. Karadzovski has both Bulgarian and FYR Macedonian nationalities.

   #7. Kristoffer Gafor (194-G-92, currently plays in Sweden), who plays in the Swedish Basketettan (second division) couldn't help Malbas (12-9) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the fifth-placed Malbas was defeated 78-74 on the opponent's court by the second-ranked Jarfalla in the South group. Gafor was the top scorer with 19 points. He also added 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Gafor has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 18.4ppg, 7.2rpg, 1.6apg and 2.0spg. Gafor also holds two passports: Swedish and Bulgarian.

   #8. Viktor Vladov (202-F-91, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help Leitershofen in their game against SG Schwelmer Baskets in the German ProB (third division). Vladov recorded only 4 points in 9 minutes on the court. His team was crushed by 23 points 110-87. Vladov has averaged so far 3.3ppg and 2.7rpg in the nine games. He has dual citizenship: Bulgarian and German.

Bulgaria U20 steps up for another big win over Romania - Jun 14, 2013

Bulgaria U20 got another big win over Romania U20 - 100-53 - in the second of the two friendly games between the two teams. In the first one the scoreboard showed 86-58. The Bulgarian team played even better than yesterday, and allowed only 19 points in the first half, while scoring at least 19 in each of the quarters - 22, 19, 33 and 26 respectively.
