The Regular Season in NBL just ended.

The game between third ranked Balkan (18-9) and ninth ranked Spartak Pleven (6-21) was the most important one in the last round on Saturday night. Balkan was defeated by Spartak Pleven in a tough game in Pleven 74-78. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Balkan. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 23-5. But Balkan won second period 23-10. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Spartak Pleven dominated on the defensive end, holding Balkan to just 5 points in first quarter. They made 25-of-30 free shots (83.3 percent) during the game. 27 personal fouls committed by Balkan helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for power forward Dimitar Marintchechki (201-90, agency: Dynamics Global Management) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 15 rebounds. The former international forward Ilia Stankov (198-76) contributed with 29 points for the winners. International guard Stanimir Marinov (191-91) answered with 15 points for Balkan. Balkan's coach Aleksandar Todorov tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Spartak Pleven maintains ninth place with 6-21 record. Balkan at the other side keeps the third position with nine games lost.
NBL top team - Lukoil Academik (24-3) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed tenth ranked U20 (1-26) in Sofia 81-57. It was a great evening for Greek power forward Dimitris Haritopoulos (205-83, agency: Interperformances) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Brandon Heath helped adding 13 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 steals. The best for the losing side was forward Aleks Simeonov (200-93) with 9 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending champion maintains first place with 24-3 record. U20 lost fifth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay dead last with 26 lost games.
The game in Burgas was also quite interesting. Second ranked Levski Sofia (23-4) played at the court of 8th ranked Chernomorets (10-17). Levski Sofia did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 88-71 on Wednesday. It was an exceptional evening for Nemanja Protic who led the winners and scored 17 points. Kiril Raykov came up with 20 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for Chernomorets in the defeat. Chernomorets' coach Detcho Koeshinov let to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Levski Sofia have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They maintain second place with 23-4 record behind leader Lukoil Academik. Loser Chernomorets keeps the eighth position with 17 games lost.

In the last two games of round 27 Beroe was beaten by Rilski Sportist on the road 99-95. Tundja Yambol lost to Cherno More on its own court 80-86.
The most impressive performance of 27th round was 23 points and 13 assists by Terry Smith of Rilski Sportist.

Rilski Sportist - Beroe 99-95

No shocking result in a game when fourth ranked Rilski Sportist (17-10) beat 7th ranked Beroe (11-16) in Samokov 99-95 on Wednesday. The hosts trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 5-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 99-95. Rilski Sportist outrebounded Beroe 36-19 including a 18-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. It was an exceptional evening for American point guard Terry Smith (185-86, college: Mercyhurst) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 13 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). American-Italian forward Angelo Caloiaro (203-89, college: USF) accounted for 22 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side. Forward Boyko Milenkov (197-83) came up with 24 points and 5 assists and guard Vasil Aleksandrov (188-90) added 20 points and 4 assists respectively for Beroe in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Rilski Sportist maintains fourth place with 17-10 record. Newly promoted Beroe keeps the seventh position with 16 games lost.

Chernomorets - Levski Sofia 71-88

The game in Burgas was also quite interesting. Second ranked Levski Sofia (23-4) played at the court of 8th ranked Chernomorets (10-17). They also forced 19 Chernomorets turnovers. It was an exceptional evening for Serbian guard Nemanja Protic (182-86) who led the winners and scored 17 points. The former international guard Zlatin Georgiev (195-85) accounted for 13 points and 5 rebounds for the winning side. Four Levski Sofia players scored in double figures. Forward Kiril Raykov (196-87) came up with 20 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and American center James Tyler (218-88) added 9 points and 15 rebounds respectively for Chernomorets in the defeat. There was a minor upset when 5th ranked Tundja Yambol (13-14) lost at home to seventh ranked Euroins Cherno More (12-15) 86-80 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 3 points at the halftime before their 28-18 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. It was an exceptional evening for Croatian-Canadian center Ljubisa Vrcelj (210-84, college: Jacksonville) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. International Tihomir Zhelev (193-90) accounted for 21 points for the winning side. Montenegrin power forward Nemanja Milosevic (204-87, college: W.Kentucky, agency: Interperformances) came up with 23 points and 8 rebounds and forward Stoyan Petkov (198-85) added 11 points and 12 rebounds respectively for Tundja Yambol in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Tundja Yambol's coach Ivan Cholakov gave the chance to play for eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Euroins Cherno More moved-up to sixth place. Loser Tundja Yambol keeps the fifth position with 14 games lost.

U20 - Lukoil Academik 57-81

NBL top team - Lukoil Academik (24-3) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed tenth ranked U20 (1-26) in Sofia 81-57. U20 was ahead by 2 points at the halftime before a 39-13 second half run of Lukoil Academik. They dominated on the defensive end, holding U20 to just 4 points in third quarter and to 13 points in second half. Lukoil Academik dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to U20's 26. Lukoil Academik forced 23 U20 turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by U20's players. U20 was plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for Greek power forward Dimitris Haritopoulos (205-83, agency: Interperformances) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. The biggest surprise of round 1 in Division A took place in Troyan where host Chavdar (1-0) beat Beroe-2 (0-1) 97-84 on Sunday evening.
