NBL Round 21: Beroe defeats Tundja Yambol in the closest game of the week - Mar 20, 2013

The most exciting game of round 21 in the NBL took place in Yambol. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 5th ranked Tundja Yambol (11-10) to sixth ranked Beroe (9-12) 70-69 on Wednesday evening. The guests trailed by 3 points at the halftime before their 17-9 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. American guard Reginald Holmes (193-87, college: Morgan St.) stepped up and scored 25 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and his fellow American import guard Will Walker (183-87, college: De Paul) chipped in 9 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. The best for the losing side was Serbian power forward Filip Vukosavljevic (205-83, agency: Global Sports Plaza) with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Newly promoted Beroe maintains sixth place with 9-12 record. Tundja Yambol at the other side keeps the fifth position with ten games lost. Beroe are looking forward to face Chernomorets (#8) in Burgas in the next round. Tundja Yambol will play on the road against Balkan in Botevgrad and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Sofia: Lukoil Academik (#1) and Levski Sofia (#2). Lukoil Academik (19-2) won against visiting Levski Sofia (17-4) 98-94. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Levski Sofia. American guard Brandon Heath (193-84, college: San Diego St.) nailed 16 points and 8 assists for the winning side and Bojan Popovic accounted for 18 points. Serbian point guard Marko Marinovic (183-83) came up with 24 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists for Levski Sofia in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Lukoil Academik have an impressive series of nine victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 19-2 record. Levski Sofia at the other side keeps the second position with four games lost. Lukoil Academik will play against Euroins Cherno More (#7) in Varna in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Levski Sofia will play on the road against Spartak Pleven (#9) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

The best player for the winners was James Tyler who had a double-double by scoring 19 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks (perfect from the field making all eight shots !!!). At the other side the best for losing team was Tencho Tenchev who recorded 20 points. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Chernomorets moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Cherno More. U20 lost their twentieth first game in a row. Newly promoted team still closes the standings. Chernomorets will meet higher ranked Beroe (#6) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. U20 will play against Rilski Sportist (#3) in Samokov and hopes to get finally their first victory.
9th ranked Spartak Pleven (5-16) was outscored at home by third ranked Rilski Sportist (15-6) with the biggest margin this round 103-77. It was a good game for Angelo Caloiaro who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Rilski Sportist maintains third place with 15-6 record having four points less than leader Lukoil Academik. Spartak Pleven at the other side keeps the ninth position with 16 games lost. Rilski Sportist's next round opponent will be bottom-ranked U20 (#10) in Sofia and are hoping to win another game. Spartak Pleven will play at home against the league's second-placed Levski Sofia.

In the last game of round 21 Cherno More lost to Balkan on the opponent's court 72-76.


Spartak Pleven - Rilski Sportist 77-103

9th ranked Spartak Pleven (5-16) was outscored at home by third ranked Rilski Sportist (15-6) with the biggest margin this round 103-77. The game without a history. Rilski Sportist led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Spartak Pleven's 40. They outrebounded Spartak Pleven 36-21 including 25 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for American-Italian forward Angelo Caloiaro (203-89, college: USF) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. Serbian guard Branko Mirkovic (190-82, agency: Global Sports Plaza) contributed with 27 points and 4 assists for the winners. Power forward Dimitar Marintchechki (201-90, agency: Dynamics Global Management) answered with 23 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) and center Denis Agre (203-88, college: Pepperdine) added 17 points in the effort for Spartak Pleven. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Rilski Sportist maintains third place with 15-6 record having four points less than leader Lukoil Academik. Spartak Pleven at the other side keeps the ninth position with 16 games lost. Chernomorets - U20 83-71

Bottom-ranked U20 (0-21) is still winless. This time they lost on the road their 21th consecutive match to eighth ranked Chernomorets (8-13) 83-71 on Wednesday evening. The game was mostly controlled by Chernomorets. U20 managed to win fourth quarter 21-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The best player for the winners was American center James Tyler (218-88) who had a double-double by scoring 19 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks (perfect from the field making all eight shots !!!). Bogdan Boev (196-82) chipped in 22 points and 5 assists. Tyler is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. At the other side the best for losing team was naturalized Danish forward Tencho Tenchev (202-93, agency: Interperformances) who recorded 20 points and center Velislav Galabov (207-94) added 10 points and 10 rebounds respectively. Balkan - Cherno More 76-72

Rather expected game in Botevgrad where 7th ranked Euroins Cherno More (8-13) was defeated by fourth ranked Balkan (13-8) 76-72. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Euroins Cherno More won third quarter 20-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Balkan won last quarter 18-16. It was a good game for Brazilian center Atila Santos (208-83, college: Minnesota St., agency: Warren Sports International) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 10 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). Serbian forward Vladimir Panic (194-82) contributed with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. The former international point guard Plamen Aleksiev (180-87) answered with 16 points and forward Simeon Iliev (203-89, agency: Interperformances) added 13 points in the effort for Euroins Cherno More. Four Euroins Cherno More players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Balkan maintains fourth place with 13-8 record. Euroins Cherno More at the other side keeps the seventh position with 13 games lost. Balkan's next round opponent will be Tundja Yambol (#5) at home. The biggest surprise of round 1 in Division A took place in Troyan where host Chavdar (1-0) beat Beroe-2 (0-1) 97-84 on Sunday evening.
