Sonja Kireta's double-double lands her Player of the Week award among Croatians playing currently abroad - Feb 26, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Croatians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Sonja Kireta

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international center Sonja Kireta (198-76, currently plays in Italy). She was the major contributor in Parma's victory against the seventh-ranked Pall.Pozzuoli (4-11) 89-86 in the Italian A1 in Sunday night's game. Kireta had a double-double by scoring 24 points and getting 14 rebounds in 30 minutes on the court. Lavezzini Parma (11-4) is placed third in the A1. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Kireta is ranked sixth on the list of the top scorers in the league and also on the list of best rebounders (third place). She has individually a very good year with high stats. Kireta averages: 15.5ppg, 9.7rpg, 2FGP: 52.5% and FT: 70.5% in the 15 games she played so far. She played for the Croatian senior national team six years ago.

Ana Lelas

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Ana Lelas (183-83, currently plays in France). Lelas led Lattes Montpellier to a 2-point victory against the seventh-ranked Nantes Reze (9-11) 72-70 in the French LFB last Saturday. She scored 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Lattes Montpellier Agglomeration Basket (17-3) is placed first in the LFB. Lelas' overall stats this season are: 9.5ppg, 4.2rpg, 1.9apg, 2FGP: 40.7%, 3FGP: 35.4% and FT: 95.1%(39-41). She is in the roster of the Croatian senior national team.

   #3. The Croatian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Emilija Podrug (190-79, currently plays in France). Podrug led Lyon to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Basket Landes (11-9) 69-53 in the French LFB on Sunday night. She scored 12 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 23 minutes. Union Lyon Basket Feminin (12-8) is placed fourth in the LFB. It's Podrug's first season with the team. This year Podrug's overall stats are: 7.8ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.3apg, 2FGP: 57.0%(61-107), 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 81.8% in the 20 games. She played for the Croatian national team three years ago.

Lisa Karcic

   #4. Power forward Lisa Karcic (185-86, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Villanova, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish LFB could not help Hondarribia-Irun (5-12) in their last game. Despite her very good performance Hondarribia-Irun lost 56-66 on the road to the league outsider (#11) Socinsa Bembibre. Karcic was the top scorer with 16 points. She also added 7 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 40 minutes. It was Hondarribia-Irun's fifth consecutive loss in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Karcic belongs to league's best blockers (ranked #2) and also on the list of most steals (third place). This year her total stats are: 8.9ppg, 5.1rpg, 1.3apg and 2.3spg in the 17 games. Karcic is a naturalized American. She is also Croatian national team player. Strangely Karcic has never played in Croatia.

   #5. Former international center Petra Stampalija (189-80, agency: Josep and Nicolas, currently plays in France), who plays in the French LFB was not able to help Union Hainaut (5-15) in their last game on Saturday. Despite her good performance the bottom-ranked Union Hainaut was defeated 90-75 on the opponent's court by the higher-ranked Charleville-Mezieres (#10). Stampalija scored 10 points. Stampalija has relatively good stats this season: 10.7ppg, 4.3rpg, 3.3apg and 1.3bpg. She used to play for the Croatian national team three years ago.

Marija Rezan

   #6. Center Marija Rezan (198-89, currently plays in Euroleague) was not able to secure a victory for Perfumerias Avenida (5-7) in their game against Good Angels (9-3) in the Euroleague. Rezan cannot count it as her best performance. She scored only 3 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 15 minutes. The fourth-placed Perfumerias Avenida lost 64-74 in Kosice to the leading Good Angels in the group C of Euroleague. Rezan has averaged so far 5.3ppg, 5.6rpg and 1.4bpg in the seven games. She is an international player who is currently on the senior Croatian National Team roster.

   #7. International guard Sandra Mandir (177-77, currently plays in Turkey) led Istanbul Universitesi to an easy victory against the 12th-ranked Besiktas (5-15) crushing them 82-61 in a derby game in the Turkish TKBL last Monday. Mandir scored 13 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists. Istanbul Universitesi SK (10-10) is placed sixth in the TKBL. Mandir has averaged so far 9.2ppg, 3.8rpg and 2.6apg. She is also Croatian national team player.

   #8. Swingman Jelena Ivezic (182-84, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help Ceyhan Bld (9-11) in their game against Fenerbahce (18-2) in the Turkish TKBL. Despite her good performance in Tuesday night's game She scored 10 points. This season Ivezic has relatively solid stats: 12.3ppg, 3.3rpg, 1.5apg and 1.6spg. She plays currently for the Croatian national team.

Tomica Bacic

   #9. Former U16 international guard Tomica Bacic (182-87, college: Iona, currently plays in Ireland) led TM Hotel Cork to a victory over the closely-ranked Ulster Rockets (7-7) 86-74 in the Irish Superleague last Saturday. Bacic was MVP of the game. She recorded 31 points (!!!) and grabbed 8 rebounds in 40 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Bacic's third season in pro basketball. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Team Montenotte Hotel Cork (13-2) is placed second in the Superleague. Her team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. Bacic belongs to league's top scorers (ranked #3) and also on the list of best rebounders (fourth place). She has very impressive stats this year: 19.1ppg, 9.3rpg, 2.0apg, 1.3bpg and 1.1spg in the eight games. Bacic used to play for the Croatian U16 national team ten years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Croatian passport but never been selected to any of Croatian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Suzy Batkovic-Brown (195-C-80, currently plays in Australia), who plays in the Australian WNBL could not help Adelaide Lightning (18-6) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Batkovic-Brown's very good performance Adelaide Lightning was defeated 60-53 on the road by the lower-ranked Townsville Fire (#4). She was the top scorer with 15 points. Batkovic-Brown also added 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Batkovic-Brown has individually a very good season with high stats. She averages: 21.0ppg, 9.7rpg, 2.2apg, 2.6bpg and 1.5spg. Batkovic-Brown has a dual citizenship: Croatian and Australian.

   #2. Jelena Radic (190-C-87, currently plays in Adriatic League) contributed to a Radivoj Korac's victory against the closely-ranked PEAC-PECS (14-5) 72-60 in the Adriatic League on Monday night. Radic had a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting 11 rebounds in 17 minutes. Radivoj Korac Beograd (15-4) is placed second in group T. It was her team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. The Regular Season already ended in the Adriatic League. Radic has averaged so far 8.3ppg, 4.7rpg and 1.1apg in the 18 games she played so far.

Center Patricija Bura (188-C-96) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for top-ranked Medvescak, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 3. The 21-year old player had a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, while her team crushed Ragusa (#6, 1-1) with 17-point margin 76-59. Mihaela Lazic (168-G-00) scored 41 points including six 3-pointers but her Brod na Savi feelt short to Pula Crnja Tours by a score of 81-95 in Prva liga Round 3. Petra Simunic (93) led Podravac with 33 points to a 90-81 win over Sibenik Medvescak-Ragusa 76-59: After trailing by one early in the second quarter, Medvescak went on an 18-2 run for a 41-26 lead and opened the second half with a 15-0 run to extend their advantage to 58-31.
