Cyprus participates in the U20 European Championship Men, for first time after many-many years. Cyprus with official decision of the federation was participating all the previous years only at the U16 competitions and that was it since there was no any continuation or commitment or even a plan in these participations, the players of the NT after the U16 had no other continuation in any other NT, so the amazing and at the same time unique way which Cyprus Basketball federation organized the specific National team could characterize as a case study by itself, since the selection took place within two weeks time and with the two coaches selecting the NT to represent the country among 40-45 kids trained togehter for 2 weeks....

The National head coaches of the U20 NT (the same duet as with the Mens NT which lately won the tournament of the European Championship Of The Small Countries) did their best within reasonably feasible way and took with them in Pitesti of Romania the crme de la crme of the youth Cyprus basketball content, whereas there is a question in regards to the no-call or no-selection of the team-mate of Rafael Eleftheriou (200-G-94) in Mantoulidis, Antreas Christodoulou (197-SF-95) who is consider the next hot project for Cyprus Basketball and was a regular member of the team of Mantoulidis being among the top scorers with 12 points per game and is already on a great demand as both teams of Thessaloniki, PAOK and Aris want to transfer him in their team while rumors do bring Olympiakos to showing some interest too as Mantoulidis and teh European champions have solid relations.. .

Never the less, in the premier game of the newly established National team, against the Netherlands, the Cyprus NT lost with 58-66, after a black-out in the last period where the Dutch players outscored the Cyprus NT with 8-15 and succeeded a crucial and previous victory for the continuation of the tournament.
From the Cyprus NT who had a very good and solid first half but collapsed after the 25th minute, 3 players tied with 15 points with the talented player of Mantoulidis, Greece, Rafail Eleftheriou having a better pluralism in his game as not only he scored 15points but he grabbed 5 rebounds, shared 6 assists and stole the ball twice from his opponents. Ieronymides of Oak Hill and Iliadis of AEL followed in the scoring while Roberto Mantovani of AEL lost the double-double figures for one rebounds as he ended the game with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

The Coaching team of Cyprus NT decided to use basically six players from their 12 in roster and that was (probably) fatal since the last period the six players were much too tired to keep the paste and finally win the game. Eleftehriou, Ieronymides and Iliadis remain in the court for more than 33 minutes, Mantovani 30 and Aristotelous 28, while Simos Antoniou saw 22 minutes of action. All the other members of the Cyprus NT remain mostly in the bench. On the other hand, the Dutch Coach (who probably had his team for some months if not years prepared and trained) used most of his players and share the time equally to at least 9 members of his team while only one member of his NT played only for two minutes and of course all the players participated in the team.

The game between the two teams was a derby up until the 32nd minute when Ieronymides succeeded the jump shot to draw the game to 54-54 7.51 before the end of the game, from then and on the players of Coach Yiannaras remain pointless for five minutes before the assist of Eleftheriou finds Mantovani to score the 56th point for the Cyprus NT 2.52 before the end of the game with the score being 56-62 but the psychology and momentum being totally pro Holland, since the Cypriot players were not able to score at all other than a basket coming from a hook shot by Eleftheriou.

The periods were 20-14, 40-30, 50-51, 58-66
Top scorers:
Cyprus: Rafael Eleftheriou 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, Viktoras Ieronymidis (200-G/F-95) 15 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, and Stefanos Iliadis (185-PG-94) 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Netherlands: Olaf Schaftenaar (206-C-93) 17 points and 9 rebounds, Yannick Van Der Ark 15 points and 5 rebounds, and Hidde Arjans Vos 10 points and 3 rebounds
The next game of the Cyprus NT will be against the very strong team of Switzerland which lost in the same way as Cyprus in their premier game against Belgium 67-72 (The last period was 20-10 for Belgium)

Keravnos - AEK 80-79 Keravnos eked out a narrow home win over AEK to victoriously open Division A Finals. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But AEK won fourth quarter 26-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Keravnos looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by AEK helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities.
