We bring you last week's top performances from Czechs who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international shooting guard David Jelinek (194-90, currently plays in Spain). He contributed to a Caja Laboral's victory against one of league's weakest teams Lagun Aro GBC (7-19) 88-80 in the Spanish ACB in Saturday night's game. Jelinek scored 8 points and had 3 steals in 20 minutes on the court. Caja Laboral Vitoria (20-6) is placed second in the ACB. This year Jelinek averages: 2.8ppg, 2FGP: 83.3% and FT: 66.7% in the five games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Czech Republic senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to former international center Jiri Hubalek (208-82, agency: Two Points, college: Iowa St., currently plays in Italy). Hubalek was the major contributor in an Umana Venezia's victory against the league outsider Angelico Biella (5-19) crushing them 97-62 in the Italian SerieA last Sunday. He scored 14 points, had 9 rebounds and made 3 blocks. Umana Reyer Venezia (12-12) is placed eighth in the SerieA. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. It's Hubalek's first season with the team. Hubalek's overall stats this year are: 2.9ppg, 2.4rpg, 3FGP: 9.1% and FT: 28.6%. He played for the Czech Republic national team in 2009.

   #3. The Czech Republic player who performed third best last week abroad was an international point guard Tomas Satoransky (201-91, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB. Satoransky could not help Cajasol (9-17) in their last game. Despite his good performance Cajasol was badly defeated 91-72 at home by the much higher-ranked (#3) Regal FC Barcelona. Satoransky was the top scorer with 14 points. He also added made 5 passes and 3 steals in 30 minutes. It was Cajasol's third consecutive loss in a row. Satoransky is currently fifth on the list of best passers with 4.0apg. This year his other stats are: 12.5ppg, 3.3rpg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 51.6%, 3FGP: 34.6% and FT: 76.5% in the 25 games. Satoransky is also a member of the Czech Republic senior national team.

   #4. Shooting guard Pavel Pumprla (198-86, currently plays in Spain) led Blusens Monbus to a victory against the closely-ranked Asefa Estudiantes (12-14) 82-71 in the Spanish ACB in Sunday night's game. He scored 13 points and had 3 steals. Blusens Monbus Obradoiro CAB (13-13) is placed ninth in the ACB. Pumprla's overall stats this season are: 7.2ppg, 3.1rpg, 1.2apg and 1.1spg. He is also Czech Republic national team player.

An experienced former international center Ondrej Starosta (215-79, currently plays in Spain) helped Planasa NV win their game against the fifth-ranked Leche Rio Breogan (12-11) 76-60 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) on Friday night. He recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 12 rebounds. Planasa Navarra (9-14) is placed tenth in the LEB Gold. It was his team's first victory after five consecutive loses. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Starosta is currently fourth on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (first place). He has individually a very good season with high stats. Starosta averages: 15.2ppg, 9.7rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1bpg. He used to play for the Czech Republic national team five years ago.

   #6. Forward Jan Vesely (211-90, currently plays in NBA) managed to help Washington Wizards in a victory against the Memphis Grizzlies (47-23) 107-94 in the NBA in Monday night's game. Vesely scored only 2 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 18 minutes. The Washington Wizards have 26-44 record this season. This year Vesely's overall stats are: 2.6ppg and 2.4rpg in the 39 games. He is a former international player as he played for the Czech Republic senior team three years ago.

Former international center Ales Chan (216-80, agency: Edge Sports, college: Seton Hill, currently plays in Cyprus) helped Apoel win their game against the league leader Keravnos (18-3) crushing them 92-67 in the Cypriot Division A last Tuesday. Chan recorded 11 points and blocked 2 shots. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Cytavision Apoel Nicosia (12-9) is placed fourth in the Division A. Chan's total stats this season are: 7.3ppg and 3.9rpg. He used to play for the Czech Republic national team three years ago.

   #8. Center Tomas Hampl (215-88, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help River Andorra (3-0) in their game against CB Clavijo (10-13) in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division). Hampl scored 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 18 minutes. his team lost 72-79 on the road to the much lower-ranked (#7) CB Clavijo. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Hampl's total stats are: 7.2ppg and 4.1rpg in the 23 games. He plays currently for the Czech Republic national team.

   #9. International center Ondrej Balvin (216-92, currently plays in Spain) is a teammate of previously mentioned Tomas Satoransky and both played together in the last Spanish ACB game. Balvin was not able to secure a victory for Cajasol (9-17) in their game against Regal FC Barcelona (17-9). He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Balvin scored only 2 points. Cajasol was badly defeated 91-72 on their home court in Sevilla by the much higher-ranked Regal FC Barcelona (#3). Balvin has averaged so far 3.2ppg and 2.7rpg. He is also in the roster of the Czech Republic national team.


The list of other players, who all have Czech Republic passport but never been selected to any of Czech Republic national teams:

   #1. Michal Kremen (200-G/F-81, currently plays in Cyprus) led Apoel to an easy victory against the league leader Keravnos (18-3) crushing them 92-67 in the Cypriot Division A last Tuesday. Kremen had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 3 assists in 28 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Cytavision Apoel Nicosia (12-9) is placed fourth in the Division A. This year Kremen's overall stats are: 7.0ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.7apg and 1.4spg in the 23 games he played so far.

   #2. Jan Kratochvil (200-F-82, currently plays in Slovakia) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Handlova (7-25) crushing them 93-62 in the Slovakian Extraliga in Saturday night's game. Kratochvil recorded 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. MBK Rieker Komarno (21-11) is placed second in the Extraliga. It was his team's first victory after four consecutive loses. Kratochvil has averaged so far 5.9ppg and 3.0rpg.

   #3. David Steffel (212-C/F-85, currently plays in Romania), who plays in the Romanian Liga Nationala could not help Rovinari (13-15) in their last game. Despite his good performance Rovinari lost 63-78 at home to the lower-ranked (#14) Oradea. Steffel was the second best scorer with 12 points. He also added 5 rebounds in 26 minutes. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Steffel belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #4 with 7.8rpg. This year he also averages: 12.1ppg and 1.4apg in the 28 games.

   #4. Jaroslav Tyrna (207-F/C-86, college: New Orleans, currently plays in Germany) managed to help Uni-Riesen Leipzig in a victory in overtime against the 12th-ranked ETB Wohnbau (11-17) 90-86 in the German ProA (second division) in Saturday night's game. Tyrna recorded only 4 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 27 minutes. Uni-Riesen Leipzig (8-20) is located at the very bottom in the ProA. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Tyrna has averaged so far 6.6ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.1bpg in the 14 games.

Washington Wizards signed guard Rayshawn Simmons (193-84kg, college: Cent.Michigan, agency: Two Points) to a Summer League contract. He played last season at Orli Prostejov in NBL league in Czech Republic. In 15 games he had 11.9ppg, 4.5rpg, 5.3apg (top 4) and 1.1spg. Simmons has never been drafted by the NBA. Turi Svitavy (NBL) inked 19-year old swingman Eduard Kotasek (187-98). He has played for the last two years at CEZ Basketball Nymburk B in 1Liga in Czech Republic. In 20 games he recorded 7.2ppg, 3.6rpg, 4.1apg and 1.6spg last season. Kotasek also spent pre-season at CEZ Nymburk (also in 1Liga) that year. He played in the final of Czech Republic 1.Liga. Pavel Benes Named Head Coach at BC Kolin - 4 days ago
Former Czech National Team member Pavel Benes (190-G-75) has been named the new head coach of BC BK Geosan Kolin. Benes 42, has signed a three-year contract with BK Geosan Kolin and it will be hist forst time as a head coach in the NBL. He spent the past few years leading Nymburk's U19 squad, this past season to a 4th place finish as well as an assistant on the Senior National Team under Ronin Ronen Ginzburg.   [read more]
