EuroBasket 2015: Bittersweet victory for Estonia - Aug 10, 2013

Estonia's most embarrassing performance of recent years continued with a 64:63 victory at home against Holland. The hosts won the first half 44:30 but performed an unbelievably ugly 2nd half which included guests' 20:3 run. With 5 and half minutes to play it was 54:59 - Holland had outscored the hosts 10:29 in 14 minutes and were very close to securing the ticket to the next round. Still, the hosts managed to end the game with a heart-breaking 10:4 run and a long-awaited victory.

Estonia, having lost to Holland on the road and to Portugal at home, and maintaining the least possible chance to make it to EuroBasket 2015, started the game with two reasons to celebrate even before the game. They welcomed back Kristjan Kangur (201-SF-82), the local icon; besides that, Holland had to play without Mohamed Kherrazi as the officials discovered (!!! in the third round of the tournament !!!) that only one naturalized player is allowed to play. The other naturalized player in Dutch squad is Sean Cunningham - both did lots of damage in the first game against Estonia...

The hosts succeeded in almost everything in 1st quarter, winning it 30:18. The 2nd was almost even, already as the first half ended 44:30. The second half became a disaster for the hosts. With 13 minutes to play and Estonia ahead 51:39, a dunk by Worthy de Jong (194-SG-88, agency: R.H.Consultancy) started guests' 3:20 (!!!) run during 8 minutes. The hosts made 6 turnovers and missed all 6 shots during the period that almost cost them the game. Luckily for them, Josh Duinker became the key player during final minutes, missing 5 of 6 free throws. Tanel Sokk (182-G-85), on the other hand, made all 4 and Kristjan Kangur added a crucial three-pointer.

With 6 secs left, Duinker had a chance to make a possible winning free throws but missed both and Estonia held the ball, missing the final shot and giving Holland a pretty fair overall chance of winning the group as they have only a home game against Portugal left to play. Estonia has to beat Portugal on the road by at least 9+N points (and hope that Holland loses to Portugal at home by 4+N points) to maintain a dream of reaching next round.

Rain Veideman (193-G-91) led the winners with 15 points. Tanel Sokk added 13 and Janar Talts 11 points. Kristjan Kangur, only recovering from a recent surgery, played 31 minutes and scored 5 + 14 rbs. De Jong had quite a game on the Oranje team, with 16+12 rbs.

KML: BC Kalev/Cramo wins another title - 2 days ago
BC Kalev/Cramo defeated Avis Utilitas Rapla 91:62 on the road and was crowned a champion for the 9th time with a 4:0 sweep. Kalev/Cramo started the game with a huge 15:2 run but the hosts managed to come back as they trailed 29:32 only in the middle of the second. However, Kalev made a 7:0 run and won the first half 41:32. In 3rd, Avis fought well and trailed 47:52 with 4 minutes to play. That was it as Kalev made a decisive 14:0 run, increased the gap to 19 with a quarter to go and didn'...   [read more]
