All You Need is Love - May 13, 2013

Whether we're watching International teams or Under 21 games in International title tournaments we expect to see the best that Europe has to offer. Over the weekend the Euro League Final Four, being the king of European basketball, did not disappoint. We, for sure, got the best and a little bit more.

What we saw from the four participants playing was reflected in the following four human conditions: Love, Courage, Indifference and Pride.
.
Witnessed in London was the fundamental nature of what makes one team a champion and what make others, by comparison, just "wanna-bes".
One team down from the cold and just as cold as ice, another team long on talent but shortsighted and the third beat down by adversity but competing with dignity. The Euroleague Final Four weekend left nobody indifferent and offered us a basketball show to remember.

Final Standing:
1. Olympiacos
2. Real Madrid CF
3. CSKA
4. FC Barcelona

Olympiacos: All You Need is Love with permission from J. Lennon and P. McCartney. Returning Euro League Champion remained faithful to the same team from last season and they played like they loved each other. They knew in every moment what they had to do to repeat as champions. If Love can be defined with words like sacrifice, compromise, belief, sharing and faith then they are, truly, in love with each other. Hats off to the players, coaches and directors that, in the real sense of the word, are a true team.

Real Madrid CF: Courage personified but in a do or die battle courage is insufficient. Even as the courageous bull fights on against he who sheaths the burnished blade of death the finish is almost always foreseeable and prearranged. This matador had a name: Vassilis Spanoulis.

CSKA: The grand favorites with their budget doubling their adversaries proved that (with the permission of the Beatles), Money cant Buy Me Love. To be honest they appeared they were there playing only for their (high) salaries. They were not ready to match Olympiacos desire and were spiritless, tired and appeared almost bored in their Indifference. It was all personified in Milos Teodosic.

FC Barcelona: In the end they were a three wheeled wagon that competed and held together in this race by Pride. Missing important players like Pete Michael and Nate Jawai, with CJ Wallace and others nursing themselves along, they fought the brave fight. In the end they had to rely on youngsters like Abrines, Rabaseda and Todorovic and youngsters, in these battles, are simply not ready. However, they fought hard and honored the tournament, the game and themselves by giving their all.
