Changing of the Guards by Tim Shea - Aug 9, 2013

Gentleman, he said,
I don't need your organization, I've shined your shoes,
I've moved your mountains and marked your cards
But Eden is burning, either brace yourself for elimination
Or else your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards.

Bob Dylan - Changing of the Guards

What we hear from the scouts and agents in the usual ways and places:

The scout said, "Man! he can flat out ball, he can really play and he has a basketball HiQ".

The agent adds," He has so much upside and you cant teach big".

"Yeah, yeah", agreed the scout, "and hes a real stopper, a close down
defender and hes absolutely great in traffic and able to take the hits".

"And I'm tellin ya, my PG", said agent Julio, "knows how to run a team, knows when to push, knows who has the hot hand and he really sees the floor, sees the angles and man!, he sees the play even before it happens".

Now here's what the new NBA General Managers and some modern European Front Office guys wants to hear about:

Player Evaluations, +/- ratings, Synergy, BPR-Basketball Productivity Ratings, Advance Analysis, APBRmetrics,
PER rating, Tendencies, Statistics, Stats, and more Statistics and please sir don't forget about MONEYBALL.
Gentlemen I say, somewhere between gut-experience and those numbers lies the truth... yet be careful, they both lie.

Re: Eurobasketball:
Here's something that applies to both NBA and Euro teams. Whatever happened to the rule where only the captain of a team could talk to the referees during the game? Nowadays it seems like during every game and every play there is a discussion between the players and one of the referees. Seems like the players play more "to the fans" then they do to their teams. What we are seeing is bad acting, people flopping and provocative gestures. Is this what FIBA wants? Are they going to do anything about it? Please!

In the modern day NBA game in more cases than not we see the individual over the team. So a LARGE STAR * goes to the NBA-FIBA like team of San Antonio, to those Sub Champion San Antonio Spurs as the epitome of team basketball. In this day and age of the one against everybody, look at me posing, screaming, shouting, fronting, individualist basketball culture, the SAS is The TEAM that came "this close" to being champions. The separation of being first or second, between them and the champion Miami Heat, is the distance between these two dots. .
So... Rise to your feet and applaud the team that is a pleasure to watch...Three cheers for team basketball, hip hip _.

As anyone who takes part in International basketball knows it takes a lot of work/ time/ dedication to become a Head Coach in any European league; what with certification, licenses, courses, experience etc. etc. etc. We now leave it to the NBA to "invent" a Head Coach with NO EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER, Gentlemen I give you Jason Kidd of the NY NETS.
Hello? The entitlement "Coach" is an earned, school of hard knocks title that is rooted in merit and cannot be arbitrarily given to someone or oneself. Just because I spend time in the company of the great masters of painting does not make me a master. Not that he cares I'm sure but If I run into Jason I will respectfully greet him as Mr. Kidd and not Coach... not yet, he's got to earn that.

The International League officials MUST Begin Some Honest Discussion re: The standards or rules concerning player movement as it pertains to: THE SETTING OF SCREENS
A) On the ball blocks in the Pick and Roll and
B) The off-the-ball baseline blocks.
Historically a point of debate, the actual state of affairs has become undisciplined and downright physically dangerous to the game and to it's players. Moving blocks destroy the intended fairness and harmony between offense and defense and generate a SERIOUS SITUATIONAL IMBALANCE between the two. It says here that the rules of the game MUST not be compromised, otherwise the game takes on some type of mutant form. Bottom line? Its gotten completely of control and something must be done to correct it. Punto & basta

And finally, along those same lines, the International bodies (rule makers) and the National leagues under their jurisdiction must put an asterisk next to any individual or team offensive records that were set during this past season because: By allowing moving blocks (both on and off the ball) any operational man to man defense was effectively negated, therefore corrupting any individual or team offensive records that may have been set during that season. End of story.
Tim Shea is an American and long time European basketball coach and former NBA International Scouting Director residing in Spain. He is a frequent contributor to Eurobasket.
