Kostas
Papanikolaou
ACB.COM took opinions from Greek writers & journalists about Kostas Papanikolaou's transcription to Barcelona (http://www.acb.com/redaccion.php?id=95977)
Let's take a look to our thoughts..

Dimitris Katsionis (Eurobasket.com, Hoopfellas.blogspot, Basketblog.gr)

Papanikolaou's transcription case shows clearly the current financial situation in Greek basketball and the new philosophy, even in the the top Greek clubs. Some years ago, it would be very difficult -not only for Barcelona but- for every European team to buy a player like Papanikolaou from Olympiakos or Panathinaikos. Things changed, not necessarily for the worse..

The 23-year old forward (and Greek NT's starter) was a determining factor in Olympiakos' success the last years. Fearless, very competitive and passionate, a high-octane combo forward with great shot mechanics and effectiveness and an all around presence on both ends of the court is now on the way to the stardom.. Pap performed great under Dusan Ivkovic's transition offense (last year Oly followed a tone lower tempo)a sample that can survive in ACB's basketball style, although Pasqual's team is based in a half court offense and executes very well in a lower tempo. Papanikolaou could be a defensive factor and the link who will bring balance between Blaugrana's backcourt and frontcourt. My opinion is that he will have difficult moments in Cataluna, especially in the start, considering that is his first time playing abroad. He has to work a lot. Pete Mickeal was 'a true school' for him last year in Olympiakos-Barcelona games, he has to keep this in mind.. In addition with the most Greeks, I believe that he is not ready for the NBA yet as he needs a huge improvement with the ball in his hands in order to be more creative and make opportunities for himself.. But as Pasqual worked this off season to erase his team's athletic level/ability (last year biggest weakness), the Greek energy forward is a choice in the right direction..

However, The Reds paid 1 million euros to acquire him from Aris, even if Papanikolaou had been in A1's courts for only 53 minutes (totally) the whole season.. (good catch for Aris..) Now, after 4 years and two Euroleague titles, is payback time for the player and his team. But it's a clue of Greece's new basketball culture too. Greek team's can not buy expensive players anymore, but focus on creating them. I told you, things changed.. But not necessarily for the worse..
