Three-time Basketball champion head coach Konstantinos Papadopoulos (with the team of Panathinaikos) and another seven times Attica champion (Panathinaikos and Ilysiakos) and the most successful Head Coach (in youth ages of the last two decades), has been tabbed as head coach for the Basketball Men's U16 National Team that will compete in the 2017 FIBA U16 European Championship in the hopes of earning the promotion in the First Division after the total disaster of the Euro 2016 participation and the last position among 16 countries (1-6 record) with the previous coaching team. Selected to assist Papadopoulos is the well known in the North part of the country, Theodoros Asteriadis (PAOK Thessaloniki), both of whom tackle their first serious assignment as a coaching duet coming from academies and youth teams.
An amazing selection from the Greek Basketball federation as it is the first time after quite many years that a National Coach in younger ages has actually professional career on the specific age area and quite successfully as the previous 'cases' and predecessors fail in total as they were coaching mostly Men Teams or no teams at all…
The Greek Basketball Federation probably felt that Papadopoulos has done a tremendous job with his players (in Panathinaikos and now in Doukas as he has been dismissed last summer from Panathinaikos after winning all the titles..) over the past fifteen years and that having continuity within the program has been a key to the success of the teams, he is coaching all these years.
The U16 European championship 2017 Division B will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria from the 10-19 of August 2017, and Greece will be among the National teams to fight for the promotion in a division which is more suitable for the country. In addition to Greece teams competing in the U16 zone Division B' championship include: host Bulgaria, Belarus, Belgium. Bosnia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Georgia, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Kosovo, Luxemburg, FYROM, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, and Ukraine.
Training camp to determine the 12-member Greek squad will be held in Athens by Papadopoulos himself while Assistant Coach Asteriadis will be doing the same in Thessaloniki so as to cover the country in total.
Coach Papadopoulos is planning to scout at all edges to be able to find the best players in the country and try to develop a strong and healthy team at all positions, try to give attention to detail, and relate to all the members of the Greek NT the winning mentality and try to combine all the talents with the best feasible way to try and get a gold medal for Greek Basketball even if we will compete in a division lower than we supposed to'. The U16 roster will be bright new and will be build up from scratch..
Eurobasket.com wishes all the best to the new coaching team of the U16 Greek NT
