Alfredas Vainauskas became the Russian National Team Coach. The contract is until the end of the Olympic cycle.
Alfredas Vainauskas is currently coaching Dynamo Kursk. He joined the team in 2011. Only last year he reached Russian Cup Semifinals -12 and Russian PBL Semifinals -12. Moreover he was named Eurobasket.com All-EuroCup Coach of the Year -12 and became EuroCup Champion -12.
Last year Alfredas Vainauskas's Dynamo Kursk lost the first game of EuroCup Finals to Turkish Kayseri by 14 points, but won the Finals. Kayseri continued with a better defence and the half time score was 38:25 for Kursk. Michelle Snow, already started with 8 points in the opening quarter, made the show go on with successive jumpers and the home side did never look back. The crucial point was when nearly 2 mins left in the third quarter, Kayseri made the difference go below 12 points, but that was it. The score 75:52 meant a victory for Kursk and 4 years later, Eurocup Women title went to Russia. The last team to achieve that success from Russia was Dinamo Moscow, who had stars like Augustus, Zogota and Brunson.
