England Basketball, the national governing body for Basketball in England, and the BBL, the entity that has exclusive rights to provide the top flight of men's basketball in Britain, have announced they will be working more closely together on a joint plan, to capitalize on the surge of interest in the sport, following the London Olympics.

This past season has seen basketball's three domestic finals at Birmingham's NIA, Glasgow's Emirates Arena, and at Wembley Arena attract over 20,000 spectators, and like for like attendances at the top clubs are up 27% for the recently completed 2012/13 season. A new franchise will be in Birmingham in the new season, and London Lions are moving to the Copper Box Arena. BBL have also announced a five year sponsorship deal with Spalding, and further commercial sponsorships will be announced shortly. In addition, grass roots activities by England Basketball and the BBL Foundation are expanding significantly, particularly around the 3on3 form of the game, and basketball has seen the greatest increase in participation in England amongst all team sports, and is now ranked third in team sports for regular participation, behind only football and cricket.

England Basketball Chairman Jan Hagen said, "I am excited about the tremendous potential in the sport, following my recent appointment as Chairman, and I believe we have a great opportunity to drive participation in the sport by working with the BBL, the top Clubs, and other partners. The BBL clubs are committed to their work in the communities and in youth development and we want to leverage even further the synergies between the organizations.England Basketball will be actively looking to work with other basketball specific and multi-sport partners as part of its new strategy and more collaboration projects will follow in due course."

Ed Percival, Chairman of BBL said, "We are delighted to support this focus and drive on basketball participation, and particularly in our inner cities. Working with the governing body even more closely will undoubtedly enhance our delivery programmes and drive long term interest in the sport."

Further announcements about the details of the plan will be announced in the next few months.

Europe's Contribution to the World of Basketball - 19 days ago
The game of basketball started more than 100 years ago in Massachusetts, when in 1891 Dr. James Naismith wanted to keep his students active indoor on rainy days. He needed something vigorous, not too rough and suitable for walled-in spaces. So, he decided to nail a peach basket to the wall, and the rest is history. Today, basketball is among the top 5 biggest sports of all times. It's extremely popular and has been greatly influenced by the African-American communities of the USA. The ga...   [read more]

Jokic won't join Serbia in the Eurobasket - 22 days ago
Nikola Jokic(209-C-95, agency: BeoBasket) met with Serbian national team head coach Sasa Djordjevic and announced him that he won't participate in the EuroBasket. As Sporski Jurnal reported, the Denver Nuggets center told Djordjevic that he'll be unable to respond to the invitation for the European Championship tournament (August 31 to September 17) where Team Serbia is one of main title contenders. This decision mainly has to do with the Jokic's preference to dedicate his offseason to in...   [read more]

Nikola Jokic to miss EuroBasket - 23 days ago
As expected, Nikola Jokic(209-C-95) will not play at 2017 EuroBasket. Although Denver Nuggets' executives said they have nothing against Jokic's participation with Serbian national team this summer, 22-year-old big guy decided to cancel on Sasa Djordjevic's call-up. After averaging 10.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in his rookie NBA season, Jokic improved his numbers to 16.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists last season. He was part of Serbian silver-medal winning team at 2016 Rio Olympics....   [read more]
