Dairis
Bertans
After another great season with VEF Riga, Dairis Bertans (192-SG-89) signed with Bilbao Basket. But, before his debut in the best European national league, 23-year-old guard will lead Latvia at EuroBasket in Slovenia. He was the best scorer of Latvian national team in last year's qualifications, with 14.1 points per game, and this will be his second European Championship (averaged 8.6 points per game in 2011).
Eurobasket.com talked to Dairis couple of days before the start of tournament in Slovenia.

Latvia played 9 friendly games, won four and lost four (with one draw), are you satisfied with team's performance in test games?

I think we improved from game to game, after every game we saw mistakes we make, and we had a time to correct them. We won last game, and I think that is good before the championship. So I would say I am pretty satisfied with what we did!

What you need to improve in upcoming days before the start of competition?

We must take care of the ball! We can't turn it over so easy, because opponents will punish us for that.

How do you spend your final days ahead of EuroBasket?

We are preparing for our first game with Bosnia.

Latvia will play in Group B, how do you rate your rivals - Lithuania, Serbia, Montenegro, FYR Macedonia and Bosnia?

I think we have tough group, probably the strongest group in the championship. Ex-Yugoslavian teams and Lithuania don't ask for more comments.

Latvian national team didn't have success at previous EuroBasket tournaments, what is your goal for upcoming tournament and which final position would satisfy you?

Our goal is to play as good as we can in every game, if we do that, we have a chance to go to the next round. I think our group is unpredictable. And going to the next round is our first goal.

Latvian U20 national team won silver medal at European championship this summer, U18 national team finished in fourth position, can we expect senior team to fight for the medals too in near future?

We have some good and talented players in youth national teams, and if they keep working hard, improving themselves and playing in high level teams, we have a chance to be at least top 8 in Europe.

Finally, how is your brother Davis recovering and when do you expect that we will see him back on the court?

Davis is doing good, he is having rehab in San Antonio and everything goes well. He doesn't want to rush, so probably he will be back somewhere around New Year. Of course, we miss him and wish him soon recovery!
