Disappointment-a look behind the results - Jul 22, 2013

Our U20 NTs European championships did not go that well, the results U can find in Eurobasket.com. I decided not to analyze them here, instead I will take U behind the scenes and results . These stories are true, believe it..

Injuries and illness are part of the game, yes, but how can these things take place?

-my starting pg hurts himself when catching a real bad pass from his team mate. The pass was so bad the poor guard lost his balance, fell back and twisted his ankle

-a shooting guard steps on a basketball during the last practise before the games started, that magically rolled there from somewhere

-during the same session that "step-on-the-ball" injury took place another guard steps on a poster that is on the floor and pulled his groin. A poster on the floor? Yes they were finalizing the preparations in the gym and were about to put that poster to the wall.

Other things then?

-Our first game was delayed 40 minutes for Tommi Huolila broke the rim in the warm-ups

-in one game the net was destroyed and we were almost denied a 3-p basket for a ref did not see that going through the net. Finally they realized it was a made shot, that was ok, but then it took like 20 minutes to fix the net.

-went to the locker room before a game, tried to get back to the gym, found myself locked in the room. The national anthems were played and I was trying to call everybody and.. finally our trainer found out that I was missing and saved me three minutes before the game. Thanks MIkko!

-our guy, Topias Palmi, scored 60 pts in a game, 60!

I was there and I still don't believe what I saw.

-the leading (or 2nd leading?) rebounder of the tournament spoke great Finnish with a clear and thick Helsinki accent. Unfortunately he played for Cyprus, Roberto Mantovani is the name.

-our most experienced big couldn't leave the hotel room for 10 days due to serious illness. The first practise he is able to participate he, naturally, wins the traditional hal-court shoot-out.

The hotel and the arrangements were good, but the foodcan U imagine Yourself eating the same stuff twice a day for two weeks? Fortunately the nice city of Pitesti had a lot of other opportunities to go and have a meal.

Like always it was great to meet all the basketball people, old friends and new friends. Thanks for the company and basketball education!

In 2007 Bluntt was drafted by Yakama Sun Kings (CBA) in first round (10th overall). The former Delaware State standoutis in his eleventh (!!!) season in pro basketball. Asbury's double-double lands him Player of the Week award - 11 hours ago
31-year old Brian Asbury (201-SF-86) had a very impressive game in the last round for Pyrinto and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 5. He had a double-double of 28 points and 16 rebounds, while his team beat Helsinki Seagulls (#2, 4-2) 78-69. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Pyrinto is placed at 4th position in Finnish league. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost two games earlier this season. Pyrinto will need more victor...   [read more]

Korisliiga Round 5: Tampereen Pyrinto defeat Helsinki Seagulls - 1 day ago
This is still too early stage of the Regular Season in Korisliiga and we should expect many changes in upcoming rounds. The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Helsinki Seagulls (4-2) at the home court on Wednesday night. Hosts were defeated by sixth ranked Tampereen Pyrinto (3-2) 78-69. Helsinki Seagulls was trailing by 3 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 24-13 charge of Tampereen Pyrinto, which allowed them to win the game.
