EuroBasket 2013: Once in the life time? - Sep 10, 2013

Petteri
Koponen
EuroBasket 2013 Slovenia continues today on September 11 and The European Champion (s) will be crowned on Sep 22nd. Ljubljana Stozice Arena (capacity 12.500) is calling these 12 countries: Italy, Spain, France, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Serbia, Croatia, Greece, Belgium, the hosting Slovenia and Scandinavian Finland.
Finland, "The Wolf Team" has surprised by now all fans, experts and probably also the players themselves! Tough Group D was a challenge for Finland, but defeating such opponents as Turkey, Russia, Greece in the same tournament sounds a real miracle. Sweden has been beaten so many times before and that was not a big deal. Italy, the only undefeated country in these Games was too strong, though. Finland made a 4-1 record and was finally # 2 in this Group D in Koper.
Finland team victories vs Turkey, Sweden and Russia (after 2 OT) + Petteri Koponen (194-PG-88) show vs Greece have woken up even the Finnish media, TV, newspapers! Yes, we really do have such a sport as basketball also in tiny (by population or amount of basketball players) Scandinavian country called Finland. Two years ago # 9 in Lithuania, now already among top-12 and chances to continue surprising the European basketball family. Finland will meet in Ljubljana first on Sep 12 Croatia, then on Saturday Sep 14 no more, no less than vs Spain and on Monday Sep 16 it will be vs the hosts, Slovenia. Again sounding so tough, but also in basketball the ball is so round. Finnish players have enjoyed it in Slovenia and believed in themselves. For many it's like "once in the life time" and those 1.500 Finnish fans in Koper and now in Ljubljana - they have the right to feel and say the same!
