Superleague Round 17: Olimpi beats Kutaisi by two after a very close game - Mar 9, 2013

The most exciting game of round 17 in the Superleague took place in Kutaisi. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 6th ranked Kutaisi (9-7) to third ranked Olimpi (13-2) 78-76 on Friday evening. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Kutaisi won third quarter 17-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Olimpi had a 31-18 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. International Akaki Dvalishvili (206-90) orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points and 9 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). Forward Levan Fatsatsia (198-88) contributed with 17 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. International center Richard Matiashvili (207-89) answered with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 15 rebounds for Kutaisi. Olimpi have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They moved-up to second place. Kutaisi at the other side keeps the sixth position with seven games lost. Olimpi's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Tbilisi Dinamo Tbilisi.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Tbilisi: MIA (#1) and Armia (#2). MIA (14-2) won against visiting Armia (12-3) 77-62. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Armia. American center Kirk Archibeque (205-84, college: Fort Lewis) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 16 rebounds and 4 blocks for the winners and Deonta Vaughn chipped in 20 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international point guard Giorgi Gamqrelidze (183-86, agency: FCM) responded with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Armia's coach Kote Tugushi rotated ten players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the seventh consecutive win for MIA. They maintain first place with 14-2 record. Defending champion Armia dropped to the third position with three games lost. MIA's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Tbilisi .
An interesting game was also surprising road defeat of 4th ranked Energy Invest in a game in Tbilisi versus Sokhumi (#8) 96-92. Sergo Atvashovili nailed a double-double by scoring 26 points and 26 rebounds for the winning side. Nate Bowie came up with a double-double by scoring 49 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds for Energy Invest in the defeat. Sokhumi maintains eighth place with 5-10 record. Loser Energy Invest keeps the fourth position with four games lost. Sokhumi's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Tbilisi STU.
The game between fifth ranked Dinamo Tbilisi (10-5) and 10th ranked Samedicino-Academia (1-14) in Tbilisi ended with biggest points difference. Dinamo Tbilisi outscored guests from Tbilisi 90-62. The best player for the winners was Lamar Karim who scored 18 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Dinamo Tbilisi maintains fifth place with 10-5 record. Samedicino-Academia lost their seventh game in a row. They keep the tenth position with 14 games lost. Dinamo Tbilisi's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Tbilisi to the arena Olimpi.

In the last game of round 17 Batumi was smashed by TSU Tbilisi on the road 86-66.



Sokhumi - Rustavi 96-92

An interesting game was also surprising road defeat of 4th ranked Energy Invest in a game in Tbilisi versus Sokhumi (#8) 96-92. They made 22-of-29 free shots (75.9 percent) during the game. Sokhumi outrebounded Energy Invest 62-44 including a 47-34 advantage in defensive rebounds. Center Sergo Atvashovili (223-85) nailed a double-double by scoring 26 points and 26 rebounds for the winning side and Serbian guard Bosko Stojakovic (196-84) accounted for 26 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists. American guard Nate Bowie (183-86, college: Cent.Arkansas) came up with a double-double by scoring 49 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds and the other American import forward Kyle Nelson (203-89, college: Augustana, IL, agency: N.E.T.) added 23 points and 10 rebounds respectively for Energy Invest in the defeat. Sokhumi maintains eighth place with 5-10 record. Loser Energy Invest keeps the fourth position with four games lost. Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Tbilisi: MIA (#1) and Armia (#2). MIA (14-2) won against visiting Armia (12-3) 77-62. MIA brought some defensive toughness making 9 blocks. Armia was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. No shocking result in a game when seventh ranked TSU (6-10) crushed 9th ranked Batumi (3-13) in Tbilisi 86-66. Batumi was ahead by 4 points at the halftime before a 51-27 second half run of TSU. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Batumi's 30. They outrebounded Batumi 45-33 including 30 on the defensive glass. TSU players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. The best player for the winners was forward Serzhi Aselaini (198-91) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points and 17 rebounds. point guard Givi Bakradze (185-91, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) chipped in 18 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Four TSU players scored in double figures. TSU's coach Giorgi Chkheidze allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Naturalized Russian center Giorgi Kvelashvili (206-81) produced 19 points and 7 rebounds and the former international forward Lasha Keshelava (200-81) added 16 points and 6 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) respectively for the guests. Manuchar Markoishvili (196-SF-86) brings the trophy from Turkey as his Galatasaray triumphs at 2012/2013 season as they won the Final series against Banvit 4-1. Galatasaray added 76:58 win in Game 4 and became the Champions. The game was mostly controlled by Galatasaray. Banvit BK managed to win fourth quarter 21-14.
