Chartrael Hall fighting the label of a Regionalliga player - Jun 9, 2013

Chartrael
Hall
Chartrael Hall (188-G-86, college: Bellarmine) was one of the most unique players in the 2012-13 Regionalliga West season with his capability of accumulating double-digits in points and rebounds each time he step out on the floor for his team, TV 1864 Salzkotten. During the season, Hall led the club in points per game (19.4), seventh in the RLW rankings, rebounds per game (10.5), third in the league, he was ranked second in the RLW in assists per game (4.9apg) and fourth in steals per game (2.4spg). He helped Salzkotten to a third place finish and a 17-7 slate in the RLW. "The season was good for the most part", Hall said. "We had our ups and downs like any team does, dealing with injuries, sickness and mental fatigue."

Prior to the start of the RLW season, the odds were that Bochum and Iserlohn, maybe Schalke and Grevenbroich would have a good shot at the title, while Salzkotten was pegged as an underdog. "The difference between Salzkotten, Bochum and Iserlohn, I would say is finances", Hall compared his team to the top two in the league. "Bochum, who was projected to move up last season but was beat out by Recklinghausen, was the top candidate to win the league this year and they did so losing just one game. Iserlohn also wanted to be in the running for moving up to Pro B because of their new facility and the money they put into their coach and team. Our team was more of a laid back, play for fun team at first Then once the club realized that our team was really good and we were winning games by large margins, talk of moving up came into the picture. But I would say finances overall is the difference."

Hall's journey started in his hometown Louisville, Kentucky. After two years at Spalding University he transfered to NCAA Division 2 program Bellarmine. Coming out of school in 2009 he was determined to pursue a career as a professional basketball player and even found himself on NBA radar, but eventually signed a contract which took him to the lower leagues in Germany. "After my workout with the New York Knicks back in 2009, I ended up waiting for summer league stuff and it never happened and I ended up in 2. Regionalliga and I have been labeled ever since. But I am not a Regionalliga player by any means. My level of basketball is much higher." He drew the interest of Pro A coaches in the past, a deal, however, did not happen: "I practiced last year with the Finke Baskets Paderborn almost all season and I was bummed I did not get an offer after Christmas break", Hall said and added: "But maybe this season I will get an offer from Paderborn and they will allow me to come and help their organization. I am hoping that I can continue to keep working and make it to the highest level of basketball. I have a passion and desire for the game and I will not stop until I am where I need to be. It is all about being at the right place, at the right time and doing something about it."

As American players are mostly the only professionals on Regionalliga teams, they are usually being asked to shoulder the statistical load. Like Hall did in Salzkotten.
"There are good Americans and the battles are good but the key to the game is this, who can make their german players play better! That is the key", Hall said who is currently preparing for another season in Germany and is spending hours upon hours working out in the gym and on the court in order to be ready: "Summer time is my time! I put in countless hours of work because I know that in order for me to go to the next level individually, I must work work work work work work! I try to go 2-3 times a day and if I can not then I will always make sure that I run, do push ups, sit ups, dribbling drills and passing. I really focus on my fundamentals when I am working out in the summer. Then I will workout with other pro players to get the competition I need and to tryout the new moves or shots I have been working on."

Following another productive year in the Regionalliga, jumping to the next level is high on his agenda with hopes that a Pro A team will take a chance on him.
