Kyle Hines
Kyle Hines (198-F-86, agency: Beo Basket) is a 26 year old 198cm power forward from Sicklerville, New Jersey that is playing his second season with Olympiacos S.F.P. Pireus (Greece) winning the Euroleague final last season. He is a powerful player who loves to attack the basket. Has a good 1-vs-1 game and likes to go inside. He is undersized to play the power forward, but his great wingspan (7-1) allows him to guard taller players and to intimidate. He's also a great leaper and reads the opponent's game well He played at NC-Greensboro (NCAA) from 2004-2008. In his senior year, he played 31 games: 19.2ppg, 9.1rpg, 1.4apg, 1.8spg, 3.1bpg, FGP: 55.6%, 3Pts: 12.5%, FT: 62.8%. He was invited to play at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (Pre-NBA Draft): 3 games: 17.3ppg, 7.3rpg, 1.3apg, 2.3spg, 3.3bpg, FGP: 78.6%, FT: 72.7%. He then had predraft workouts with Sacramento Kings and the Charlotte Bobcats (NBA). He then went to Europe to Italy and played with Prima Veroli (Italy-Lega2, starting five): 34 games: 16.9ppg, Reb-4 (8.6rpg), 3.0spg, Blocks-2 (1.8bpg), FGP-2 (66.0%), FT: 58.5%. In 2009, he took part in the Orlando Pro Summer League (Oklahoma City Thunder). He played NBA Summer League in Las Vegas (New Orleans Hornets) in the summer of 2010.In 2010-2011 he played for the Brose Baskets Bamberg (Germany-1.Bundesliga): Euroleague: 10 games: 12.9ppg, 5.4rpg, 1.1bpg, FGP: 64.3%, FT: 46.7%; German League: 46 games: 10.4ppg, 4.6rpg, Blocks-3 (1.2bpg), FGP-3 (61.1%), 3PT: 33.3%, FT: 52.4%. He won the double with Bamberg. Lasts eason in Greece he played Euroleague: 22 games: 9.9ppg, 4.5rpg, 1.0apg, 1.1bpg, FGP: 51.9%, FT: 57.6%; Greek League: 34 games: 8.6ppg, 3.7rpg, 1.1apg, 1.0spg, Blocks-4 (1.1bpg), FGP: 57.4%, FT: 64.4% He spoke to eurobasket after winning his second Euroleague title.

Congrats Kyle for your second Euroleague win. Nothing against athletes Dennis Davis and Shonn Greene, but are you now the most famous person in your hometown Sicklerville, New Jersey?

I dont really know. You would have to ask the town. There have been some well known people from my town. A kid won an Olympic gold medal at the last Olympics. I am happy though to be listed with them.

Are comebacks in your blood?

I think that our team has had experience in making comebacks the entire Euroleague season. It just shows the character of the team to be able to comeback and not be afraid or panic in uneasy situations. We never plan comebacks. We would rather be in games where we had a comfortable lead, but it seems that things always work out for us.

Who could forget the comeback last season winning the Euroleague. How was this win against Real Madrid special?

In our first Euroleague win last season, we werent able to enjoy it at all since we came back until the buzzer winning with a shot. We were able to enjoy the win against Real Madrid more. We had the lead in the fourth quarter and could sense the win.

Olympiacos Pireus was down bad in the first quarter and still trailed at halftime. What were the reasons for the slow start?

We didnt come out the right way and didnt have the right mentality. You had to give Real Madrid a lot of credit since they hit contested shots. We started to pick it up a bit in the second quarter. There was this sense of urgency and we knew that if we didnt pick it up that we could lose the game badly. We knew that our backs were to the wall and we finally showed up to play.

Vassilis Spanoulis had a very slow first half, but stormed out of the gates in the third quarter hitting three consecutive three pointers. Did that change the momentum of the game?

Yes his play and big shots definitely changed the momentum of the game. He got going and got the team going as well. At that moment in the third quarter, we knew that we were ready to go.

Olympiacos Pireus did a better job defending in the second quarter especially post defesne against Real Madrid. What adjustments did the team make?

We switched our game plan. We had given up too many easy points in the first half, because we werent physical enough. We started being more tough, compact and controlled the play of the game more. We got them out of their comfort zone which helped us get going on offense in the last quarter.

Olympiacos Pireus scored 39 points in the last quarter. What was key for getting the win in the last quarter?

We scored 90 points in the last three quarters and I think that that was the most that we had scored all season long in that span. The timing was perfect for that scoring explosion. Real Madrid is such a talented team, but our guard play really sparked us with Acie law, Vassilis Spanoulus, and Konstantinos Sloukas really got on fire. We showed that in a span of two games that we could change our style of play to fit how we wanted to play keeping CSKA Moscow to 52 points and then scoring 100 points against Real Madrid.

Greek Vassilis Spanoulis was MVP. Is he currently the best player in Europe?

Yes I think that he is now the best player in Europe if not the best European player in the world. I see what he does each day. He belongs to the best in world with guys like Dirk Nowitzki and the Gasol brothers.

How important was the production of young Greek Konstantinos Sloukas who contributed 11 points?

He played an important role the whole Final four weekend. His game is really overlooked being the back up to Spanoulis. He was clutch all season long hitting big shots all season long.

Were you able to comfort Marcus Slaughter after the game. What did you guys talk about?

It was tough to talk right after the win with the celebrating, but we talked a bit. He said good game and good luck. I have much respect for him and we have forged a great relationship over the years.

Is there a better Spanish duo in the world than Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Rodriguez?

There are many great players coming from Spain. But they are one of the best. They are so talented and high scoring and so unpredictable. There are many players that can make big shots, but little players like them where you never know from exactly where.

Your defense played a big role in the second half of the final against Real Madrid. How has your defense improved in the last two years in Greece?

In my first years in Europe, I was seen more as a scorer. But since coming to Greece, I have had more of a role on the defensive side and help control the rebound margin. I just try to put my team in the best position to win every night

You played one season in Germany for the Brose Baskets Bamberg. How did Chris Fleming help you get prepared for Greece best?

It was definitely preparation. Having good preparation is key for having any kind of success on the floor. Chris taught me that being consistent in your work ethic gives you better chances to showcase your talent in order to win a title.

You have won two Euroleague titles and really have a name in European basketball. The next step is the NBA. Is that the vision for Kyle Hines in 2013-2014?

It is every players dream to play in the NBA, but I cant think about that now. My focus is too finish the season strong and accomplish our second goal of defending our Greek league title. Once the season is over than I will sit down with my family and agent and discuss the future.

Your favorite team are the Philadelphia 76ers. How does the combination of Spanoulis to Hines in a Sixers jersey sound?

Hahaha, I dont know. I think that we would be a good combination anywhere. I would love to play with him for many more years with Olympiacos Pireus.

Did you get a lot of congratulations from Bamberg?

Yes I did. Guys like scout Brendan Rooney, Chris Fleming, the rest of the coaching staff, Casey Jacobsen, Anton Gavel and all the fans. I am happy that I still have support from everyone there. I will always have friends there. Bamberg will always have a place in my heart.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

I watched Untraceable on the London channel.

Thanks Kyle for the chat.
