Williams
Richard Williams (178-PG-87, college: San Diego St.) is a 25 year old 178cm guard that played for SC Rasta Vechta this season and is sitting in the Pro A finals against the Duesseldorf Baskets. He is a very fast guard that can play either one or two. Great at pushing the break. Can score by shooting the three or using his explosiveness to beat his man. Gets to the basket and scores in traffic. A specialist in steals that uses his quickness to intimidate on defense. Great ball control. Gets the whole team involved when playing the point but can takeover a game at any time. He started his basketball career at San Diego St. (NCAA) in 2005 where he played until 2009. In his senior year he played 36 games: 7.2ppg, 4.3rpg, 3.5apg, 2.1spg, FGP: 40.9%, 3Pts: 37.5%, FT: 64.2%. In 2009-2010, he started his professional basketball career for The San Diego Surf (ABA), in Jan.'10 moved to FSU Selfoss (Iceland-Express League, starting five): 8 games: 27.5ppg, 8.1rpg, 3.4apg, 2.8spg, FGP: 51.6%, 3PT: 46.2%, FT: 72.7%. Last season he played for UBC Hannover Tigers (Germany-ProB, starting five): 33 games: 18.3ppg, 5.1rpg, Assists-4 (5.7apg), Steals-2 (3.2spg), FGP: 48.1%, 3PT: 36.1%, FT: 75.8%. He spoke to eurobasket about the Pro A final games.

Congrats on reaching the Beko BBL and Pro A final. SC Rasta Vechta got by BG Karlsruhe in a hard fought 5 game series. What was key in getting to the final?

I feel the key to us making it to the finals was playing with heart and playing with more effort.

How much fun was it playing against the son of legend John Stockton seven times this season? Is there ever any healthy trash talking or asking for an autograph of his dad? Lol

I don't do too much talking on the court to my opponent. It takes away from my focus. It's always fun to play against someone with a father who's as notable as John Stockton though, he's a basketball icon.

Why was it so hard to win at home during the BG Karlsruhe series?

BG Karlsruhe is a very experienced team so we knew that they wouldn't just fold because they're playing a playoff road game. They were playing to move up as well so the motivation to beat us was there.

SC Rasta Vechta has moved up to the Beko BBL. Is it tough to concentrate on the final against Duesseldorf or will the team be even more focused for this?

It's a blessing to accomplish what we did this year. We also have a lot to be excited about, but at the beginning of the season we said we wanted to be #1 and that can't happen if we overlook Dusseldorf before the series even starts. I will make sure we're focused and ready, that's my job as leader.

Both teams split the season series. In the first game, Duesseldorf won by two points and in the second game Vechta won by 20 points. What do you remember from this series?

I don't remember too much about them because the games were soo long ago, but they do have some new important pieces that weren't there when we played them the first 2 times.

Your one of those players that can really fill up the stat sheet. After what NBA player do you pride your game after?

I try not to model myself after one person but take pieces of many players games. I like to watch how Rondo see's the floor, how Chris Paul plays at different different speeds, or how Russel Westbrook plays with a chip on his shoulder.

Duesseldorf have very capable big men. What else beisdes controling the boards will it be to winning this series?

I think the key will be controlling the pace of the game. Dusseldorf is a big team so I imagine them slowing it down and going inside. We will have to control the paint and then get out and run. Make those big guys work.

What is your opinion of this two game final series that is decided on a weekend by the team that has the best point difference?

I don't agree with it. As a competitor I'd like it to be a 3 or 5 games series so we can see who really is the best. I don't think its fair to the players or fans if we split the two games and have to base it off point differential.

You guys have many very strong Americans on the team, but also good Germans. Daniel Krause doesnt get noticed as much, but I am sure the team does. How important is he to the club?

Very important. His shooting ability opens lanes for me and his scrappy play on defense gives us energy. He definitely brings more to the table than what shows up on the stat sheet.

NBA player Jason Collins cameo out saying he was gay. Do you see more professional athletes following his lead?

Jason Collins definitely has guts for what he did, that takes a lot of courage. I don't know what happens from here but I'm sure more will come forth. Who knows, everything has its time.

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Paid in full.

Thanks Richie for the chat.
