TBB Trier making German Player Development An Institution - Apr 21, 2013

When closely examining Beko BBL teams, it seems like each club has its own special kind of task that people can identify with besides trying to win games and getting their seats filled. For example, the Brose Baskets Bamberg win, win, win and if not then already fans question the job of their coach without being realistic, Phoenix Hagen have their own run and gun system that works to perfection where mascot Felix could come in from the bench and help contribute, the Walter Tigers Tuebingen giving young unknown NCAA rookies a chance and helping heighten their markt credit each year or TBB Trier who are still looking for a new playoff birth since their last in 2004, but instead elate their fans by signing young Germans and watching them develop and being a perfect example for the league how it should be done. Since Henrik Rodel stepped on board in 2010, he has had a fettish for bringing over ex Alba Berlin German players and help them mature for a lower budget player. He brought over Philipp Zwiener giving him confidence and into one of the top German players in his two seasons there as well as making Andreas Seiferth (209-C-89, agency: LUMANI 10.7) into a solid Beko BBL bigman and giving him minutes. He also gave players like Oliver Clay and Oskar Fassler minutes. Both have moved on, but have an important role with their new teams Wurzburg and Giessen. This season, he got huge talent Bastian Doreth on loan from Munich and Mathis Monninghof from the NCAA and both have been vital contributing. He also helped make Maik Zirbes into an Euroleague player. Now if one is bored over the summer, one could play Basketball lotto and try to come up with names of German players that might land on the Mosel in Trier and become German basketball household names. I think that it is great that Henrik Rodl has had the courage and been able to play with young German players the last years and giving them minutes. I think that it is important that other Beko BBL teams take TBB Trier as an example and follow their path. The Trier players develop further through playing time. Good examples are Monninghoff and SEiferth. In the last years came a good cut and good direction with the 6-6 rule. I hope that more teams will have trust in German players, added SC Rist guard Ismet Akpinar.

In the last years it hasnt only often been a fight to get success on the court, but also finding sponsors to help fatten the TBB Trier budget which has been extreme low. Trier which is very lonely in the western part of Germany has its problems to find the sponsors. However in an attempt to help find them, the club decided to start a marketing company in cooperation with some local professional soccer teams to help garner more interest from sponsors. Since the budget of the club is around only two million, the team continues to lose their top players to richer clubs as was seen with the departure of German national players Maik Zirbes and Philipp Zwiener. Rodl shapes them and they get richer elsewhere. Losing classic point guard Dru Joyce also will hurt. The question will be if Jarrett Howell can replace him? These were the three most notable players that they lost. They were able to hold Dragan Dojcin, Nate Linhart, Andreas Seiferth and Joshiko Saibou. Henrik Rodl had a long summer building a new team and constructing a massive facelift. He brought in seven new players, but with Barry Stewart got a player back who he coached in 2010-2011 on the Mosel. Stewart could be the Zwiener for this season in which he leads the team. Getting Barry back was the biggest offseason move for them. We missed his intangibles from a year ago and he can score with the best of them in the Beko BBL. As for his role, he will be the team identification this season, because he is that good, added ex TBB Trier guard John Bynum. The team brought in the young Germans Bastian Doreth and Mathis Monninghoff who will be put into the cold water at once to perform. Rodl also picked up Americans Brian Harper who built a solid basketball career in Japan the last years and Jarrett Howell who has extensive experience in Europe. Rodl also picked up a rare diamond in Vitalis Chicoko who impressed at the end of last season with BG Goettingen which rarely anyone noticed. Pedro Lopes is a young German that first will be groomed by Rodl. They recently picked up Jermaine Bucknor for insurance after the injury to Dojcin. The strength of TBB Trier this will season will be like any other season their fighting mentality and never die attitude until the end. Rodl has been known for the construction of good defensive teams, but with this new facelift is back at the start and will need to incorporate that into the new team again. Any team that plays TBB Trier will have to be ready for a hard fought game. The weakness of the team will be making a new team chemistry and sticking with the other Beko BBL teams under the glass as Maik Zirbes was their stability factor down low. Ex TBB Trier guard John Bynum is positive about the new TBB Trier team. They got off to a great start with their road win and it will be important to see if the young players can stay consistent. I think that they are better than last season. They are more athletic, actually run, have a lot of versatility and play together, warned John Bynum.

In the last Six years, The Skyliners have a record of 8-6 against TBB Trier with 5-2 at home and 3-4 on the road. Frankfurt lost the last two games in Trier 74-64 in 2008 on the last day of the season where teams were jockeying for playoff places and Frankfurt ended up getting The Bayer Giants Leverkusen in the quarterfinals. In 2009-2010, TBB Trier played a very energetic and spirited game winning 78-70 despite a monster game by American Derrick Allen who registered 29 points and 10 boards. The Deutsche Bank Skyliners lost the first game of the season in Trier 71-67 as Jimmy Mckinney and Qarraan Calhoun were missing due to injury. It was your typical season opening game as both teams were nervous and missing way too many shots. The game was tied at halftime 26 all. Frankfurt had fire power in the third quarter, but went down in the fourth quarter scoring only nine points as Frankfurt had no nerves in crunch time to win. Derrick Allen had 19 points and eight rebounds and despite TBB Trier was without top scorer Chrs Copeland, the team got needed production form Jamal Shuler, Brian Brown and George Evans to conserve the win. In 2009-2010, The Deutsche Bank Skyliners lost the first game ion Trier 71-67 as Ex Skyliner Derrick Allen contributed 19 points and eight rebounds and Frankfurt won at home 71-69 winning the game with Pascal Roller free throws. Derrick Allen led Frankfurt with 17 points. In 2010-2011, Frankfurt swept the season series. They won at home 72-55 as Pascal Roller led the home team with 17 points. The return date in Trier was an exciting battle as Frankfurt clawed out a 69-61 win as they came from behind going on a 10-0 run in crunch time to prevail. Dashaun Wood led the charge with 18 points and Jimmy Mckinney added 11 points. In their first meeting last season, TBB Trier came out with a 64-54 victory as defense played a key role. The Fraport Skyliners were led by Jon Leuer and Jimmy Mckinney with 14 points a piece. In their second meeting last season, the Fraport Skyliners were riding the wave of a very strong second half of the season where they had beat top teams like FC Bayern Munich, ratiopharm Ulm, Bamberg, Artland Dragons and the EWE Baskets Oldenburg and came to Trier with a lot of self confidence winning 72-52 displaying another trademark top defensive performance as ex NBA player Jermareo Davidson steered 19 points to the win and Jimmy Mckinney added 18 points. This was also the game where Eisbaeren Bremerhaven forward Jacob Burtschi was on the floor as much as Boris Becker had dived on the hallowed lawn at Wimbeldon in his career. This season TBB Trier won at home against Frankfurt 78-59. At halftime everything looked ok as Frankfurt trailed by only one point, but TBB trier exploded in the third quarter winning it 25-8 leading them on to the win. American Brian Harper proved too much for Frankfurt with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Skyliner Ted Scott gave his debut netting 20 points. The Fraport Skyliners are in 14th place while TBB Trier in 12th with one game more too play, but three remaining road games in Frankfurt, Berlin and Artland. Both teams need one victory to secure a spot for next season. The defesne of Trier is their staple, but as of recently they have been taking a beating averaging 87 points in the five game losing streak. Frankfurt knows that that means nothing. We have to fight for 40 minutes. It will be a defensive game. The team with the least turnovers will win, stated Devin Gibson. The Fraport Skyliners continue to play good basketball even if they have lost two of the last three games. Frankfurt lost in crunch time against Oldenburg and Bonn and know that the do or die games dont end yet. It is all or nothing in the last two games. We have to play defense like we did against Oldenburg. It will be a defensive battle, warned Johannes Voigtmann. TBB Trier visit Frankfurt April 20th.

The Fraport Skyliners head into the TBB Trier game with a record of 1-2 and are seeking their second road victory of the season. The Fraport Skyliners are recovering from a bitter 71-68 loss in their home opener against the Mitteldeutscher BC. The Fraport Skyliners didnt do a good job playing inside out and gave up 17 offensive rebounds. The Fraport Skyliners continue to do a good job keeping the turnovers down. Winning in Trier wont be a cake walk and the Fraport Skyliners will have to play more consistent offense and give a top defensive effort. We have to find a better balance inside and out. We have to keep the ball moving and get Dowell and Wright more involved. Once we get our shooters going than it is easier for our inside penetration, stressed Fraport Skyliner guard Johnathan Jones. TBB Trier have a record of 1-1 and will have more than a week rest and will be ready for the Fraport Skyliners. They lost their first home game and will be gunning for their first home win. Trier has to use their versatility and speed up the game to their advantage. They have to control the tempo and control the boards, stressed ex TBB Trier guard John Bynum.
