Nick Calathes' double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Greeks playing currently abroad - May 29, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Greeks who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida, currently plays in VTB United League). He led his Russian team Lokomotiv to a victory over the leader Zalgiris (16-2) 82-72 in the VTB United League in Monday night's game. Calathes was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 20 points and making 12 passes in 37 minutes on the court. Lokomotiv Kuban (12-6) is placed third in group B. Calathes is ranked third on the list of the best passers in the league with 6.0apg. He also averaged so far 14.5ppg, 4.4rpg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 56.1%(124-221), 3FGP: 40.3% in the 26 games he played so far. Calathes is a naturalized American. He is currently a member of the Greek senior national team. Calathes used to play for 3-year contract with Panathinaikos Athens in Greek league.

Loukas Mavrokefalidis

   #2. Second place goes to former international center Loukas Mavrokefalidis (207-84, currently plays in Spain). He was the main contributor in a Regal FC Barcelona's victory against the closely-ranked Gescrap BB (19-15) crushing them 88-62 in the Spanish ACB last Thursday. Mavrokefalidis was the best player in that game. He recorded 16 points. Regal FC Barcelona (23-11) is placed third in the ACB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This season Mavrokefalidis averages: 7.8ppg, 3.5rpg, 2FGP: 73.3%. He played for the Greek national team in 2011.

   #3. The Greek player who performed third best last week abroad was an international guard Nikolaos Zisis (197-83, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB. Zisis could not help Gescrap BB (19-15) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Gescrap BB lost 70-79 on the road to the higher-ranked (#3) Regal FC Barcelona. Zisis was the top scorer with 17 points. He also added 3 assists in 33 minutes. This year Zisis' overall stats are: 9.0ppg, 1.9rpg, 3.5apg, 2FGP: 51.0%, 3FGP: 36.2% and FT: 82.2% in the 37 games. He is also a member of the Greek senior national team.

   #4. Swingman Kostas Vasiliadis (200-84, agency: FCM, currently plays in Spain) is a teammate of previously mentioned Nikolaos Zisis. But that was another game of his team in Spanish ACB which we would like to mention. Vasiliadis contributed to a 1-point Gescrap BB's victory against the closely-ranked Regal FC Barcelona (23-11) 90-89. He scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 22 minutes. Gescrap Bizkaia Bilbao Basket (19-15) is placed sixth in the ACB. Vasiliadis belongs to league's top scorers and is ranked #9 with 13.8ppg. This year he also averages: 3.2rpg and 1.8apg in the 31 games. Vasiliadis is also Greek national team player.

   #5. Former U20 international small forward Dusan Sakota (209-86, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian SerieA was not able to help Cimberio Varese (23-7) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance the league leader Cimberio Varese was defeated 80-72 in Siena by the lower-ranked Montepaschi (#5). Sakota recorded 13 points. Sakota's total stats this season are: 8.4ppg and 2.4rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Serbian and Greek. Sakota used to play for the Greek U20 national team seven years ago.

An experienced point guard Theodoros Papaloukas (200-77, also represented by FCM, currently plays in VTB United League) managed to help CSKA Moscow in a 2-point victoryagainst the leader Khimky (14-4) 74-72 in the VTB United League in Sunday night's game. He scored only 2 points and had 3 steals in 19 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group B. CSKA Moscow (15-3) is placed second. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Papaloukas' first season with the team. This year Papaloukas' total stats are: 2.1ppg, 1.4rpg and 2.0apg in the 13 games. He is a former international player as he played for the Greek senior team five years ago.

International forward Antonis Fotsis (209-81, currently plays in Italy) was not able to secure a victory for Armani Milano (19-11) in their game against Montepaschi Siena (18-12) in the Italian SerieA. Fotsis recorded 5 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 18 minutes. Armani Milano lost 80-90 in Siena to the lower-ranked (#5) Montepaschi. Fotsis has averaged so far 6.7ppg and 4.4rpg in the 37 games. He is also Greek national team player.

Forward Nikos Barlos (203-79, currently plays in Italy) contributed to a 3-point C.de Latte BRE's victory against the closely-ranked Pall.Trento (14-14) 84-81 in the Italian Lega2 (second division) in Sunday night's game. Barlos was the top player that evening. He recorded 18 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Centrale del Latte Brescia (17-11) is placed fifth in the Lega2. Barlos has relatively good stats this season: 11.7ppg, 5.3rpg, 1.3apg and 1.6spg. He used to play for the Greek national team back in 2005.

Former international power forward Dimitris Haritopoulos (205-83, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Bulgaria) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Levski Sofia (23-4) 83-68 in a derby game in the Bulgarian NBL on Wednesday night. Haritopoulos scored 6 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Lukoil Academik Sofia (24-3) is placed first in the NBL. This season Haritopoulos has relatively solid stats: 14.1ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.6apg. He used to play for the Greek national team eight years ago.

Pat Calathes (208-G/F-85, college: St.Joseph's, currently plays in Israel) led Maccabi Haifa to an easy victory against the second-ranked Hapoel Eilat (17-10) crushing them 105-84 in the Israeli Winner League in Wednesday night's game. Calathes recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 15 rebounds. He also added 6 assists. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Places 1-6. Maccabi Bazan Haifa (17-10) is placed third. It's Calathes' first season with the team. Calathes is currently eighth on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (fifth place). He has individually a very good season with high stats. Calathes averages: 16.6ppg, 9.4rpg and 2.3apg. He is a naturalized American. Calathes used to play for Costa Cafe Marousi in Greek league.

   #2. Sten-Timmu Sokk (181-PG-89, currently plays in Georgia) led Olimpi to a victory over the closely-ranked MIA (17-3) crushing them 86-65 in a derby game in the Georgian Superleague last Tuesday. Sokk was the top player that evening. He scored 17 points and added 3 passes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Olimpi Tbilisi (17-3) is placed first in the Superleague. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Sokk has averaged so far 9.9ppg, 2.7rpg and 5.2apg. He has a dual citizenship: Greek and Estonian.

   #3. Angelo Tsagarakis (190-PG-84, currently plays in France) was the main contributor in Chalons-Reims' victory against the closely-ranked ALM Evreux (25-9) 80-74 in the French ProB (second division) last Tuesday. Tsagarakis was the top player that evening. He recorded 22 points in 27 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Chalons-Reims (23-11) is placed third in the ProB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Tsagarakis has relatively solid stats: 12.3ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.8apg in the 38 games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Greek and French. Despite Tsagarakis' Greek nationality, he previously played for the French U20 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Greek team.

   #4. Vassilis Kounas (194-G-84, currently plays in Georgia), who plays in the Georgian Superleague could not help one of league's weakest teams MIA (17-3) to beat Olimpi (17-3). Kounas recorded 7 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 15 minutes. MIA lost 75-82 in a derby game to the leading Olimpi. Kounas has averaged so far 4.7ppg, 2.9rpg, 2.1apg and 1.1spg in the 11 games. He has both Greek and Cypriot nationalities.

ASK Ippokratis KO (C) agreed terms with 20-year old point guard Elias Theodoridis (195-97). He has played for the last four seasons at Cretan Kings in the A1. A1 was a little too high level for him, where in 11 games he had just 0.8ppg last season. C will be definitely a better match and he can see more playing time   [read more]

Belfius Mons-Hainaut (Euromillions League) tabbed 25-year old American forward Juvonte Reddic (206-113kg-92, college: VCU). He played most recently at Kolossos H Hotels in Greek A1 league. In 29 games he averaged 11.6ppg and 5.8rpg last season. The previous (15-16) season Reddic played at another team Canton Charge in U.S. NBA-G-League where in 47 games he had 8.7ppg and 5.2rpg. AS Karditsas (B) agreed terms with 23-year old point guard Thomas Amparas (190-94) from Koropi. Quite impressive season as he was named to Eurobasket.com All-Greek B League Honorable Mention.
Amparas represented Greece at the European Championships U16 in Bar (Montenegro) seven years ago. His stats at that event were 7 games: 4
