Who is Euroleagues 2012-13 Coach Of The Year? - Apr 7, 2013

A few days before 2012-13 Euroleague's post season start, we take a look to the contenders of "COY" trophy evaluating not only their results, but their overall influence to each team's game style.

1.) Xavi Pascual: So far, the front-runner for the official award. Pasqual insisted on what he started to work more intensively last year, making this season's Barcelona the best half-court team in Europe. His team presents an impressive level of cooperation and thinking, together with the highest speed at half court execution. Barcelona's defense remains an "elite" one also. I'm waiting to see how he will manage the huge loss of Pete Mickeal in the post season..

2.) Argyris Pedoulakis: He had a very difficult task, replacing the "Godfather" of European basketball (Obradovic) and taking over a top club in a rebuilding process. Pedoulakis targeted to raise Panathinaikos' athletic & physical level, creating a hard-nosed team based on discipline and Europe's best half court-offense player, Dimitris Diamantidis. The Greens defensive performance is pretty impressive so far but the team is trying to balance the shortcoming of the rotation's small depth, especially in the guards. Obviously, an overachiever..

3.) Ettore Messina: The Italian professor faced many difficulties during the season and several swings in CSKAs performance each night. He struggled to find chemistry, changing many different lineups, especially in the perimeter spots (before finds in Micov the ideal quarterback-guard/wing) but quietly CSKA rises and gives the impression that plays better from day to day. The NBA influences (after one year in America) are evident (for a former sworn fan of European basketball..) as we see more "isolation" in CSKAs offense (for Weems, we have to go back in Treviso's days and Tyus Edney to see something similar from the coach) and tall lineups (Krstic at "4", Khryapa at "3") which form an interesting coaching proposal , regardless of their functionality. With the current situation, the Russians are probably the top-favorite for the title due to Messina's presence in the do or die games. Indisputably, he remains the most capable coach in the competition..

4.) David Blatt: Before 2.5 months, MTL was a mistake-structured team which performed really bad. Today, David Blatt is attempting one of the biggest come backs in the competition's recent history, targeting London's final four. Placing Smith at "4" and the activation of combo-forward Guy Pnini, gave functionality to Maccabi's offense, mobility and lanes to Blatt's penetrators as the team had a serious shooting threat from the power forward spot. Maccabi is now in a great psychologically state, tripping the clubs "No Fear" instincts..

HONORABLE MENTION

Rimas Kurtinaitis: Ok, Khimki performed really well this season proving that it's a post season level team. It's obvious that Kurtinaitis team has worked a lot in the offensive details, presenting great spacing and automated plays in the half court plus a very effective transition offense with a pivotal level of cooperation. But it's obvious also that they have to work on their mentality and create winning instincts..

Luca Banchi: Innovative work.. A team of gunners, running a high octane offense which shooting the lights out every night and delivers a low mistake basketball. It's big defensive hole in the paint didn't allow Montepaschi to qualify in the post season. Maybe Banchi will be accused as an "heretic" but "his Montepaschi" has a basketball identity for sure..

GS Lavrio (A1) strengthened their roster with addition of 24-year old American forward D.J. Johnson (206-113kg-93). Johnson just graduated from Kansas State University (NCAA). He has played there for the last five years. In 34 games he recorded 11.3ppg, 5.7rpg and 1.5bpg last season. Johnson helped them to make it to the semifinals.
