Bottom-ranked KFI managed to get a sixth victory, breaking the seven-game losing streak on Sunday night. This time newly promoted KFI won against seventh-ranked KR 89-84. KR trailed 48-46 at halftime, rallying from a 35-20 deficit at the end of first quarter to trim the gap. KFI made 32-of-39 free shots (82.1 percent) during the game, while KR only scored thirteen points from the stripe. 26 personal fouls committed by KR helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of American point guard Damier Pitts (177-89, college: Marshall) who helped to win the game recording 33 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 7 assists. The former international forward Mirko Virijevic (201-81, college: Freed-Hardeman) contributed with 24 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Martin Hermannsson (190-94) replied with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for KR. KFI (6-16) moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Tindastoll and IR. KR at the other side keeps the seventh position with 11 games lost.
Express L. top team - Grindavik (18-4) added another victory to their record. This time they beat tenth ranked Tindastoll (6-16) in Sauoarkrokur 97-91. American point guard Sammy Zeglinski (182-88, college: Virginia) scored 29 points and 6 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Aaron Broussard chipped in 27 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Grindavik's coach Sverrir Sverrisson allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. At the losing side swingman Helgi Viggosson (189-83) responded with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Grindavik have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 18-4 record. Tindastoll lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the ninth place with 16 games lost. They share the position with KFI and IR.
The game in Borgarnes was also quite interesting. Second ranked Thor Thorl (16-6) played at the court of 8th ranked Skallagrimur (7-15). Thor Thorl defeated Skallagrimur 109-96 on Sunday. Gudmundur Jonsson notched 29 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (made all of his eight free throws) to lead the effort. Even 43 points (!!!) and 9 assists by Carlos Medlock did not help to save the game for Skallagrimur. Skallagrimur's coach Palmi Seavarsson rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Thor Thorl maintains second position with 16-6 record having just two points less than leader Grindavik, which they share with Snaefell. Skallagrimur lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the eighth place with 15 games lost.
The game between 11th ranked Fjolnir (5-17) and fourth ranked Stjarnan (15-7) in Reykjavik ended with biggest points difference. Guests from Stjarnan outscored Fjolnir 107-68. Brian Mills fired a double-double by scoring 24 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Stjarnan have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 15-7 record. Fjolnir at the other side dropped to the bottom place with 17 games lost.

In the last two games of round 22 Njardvik was beaten by Snaefell on the road 83-79. Keflavik won against IR on its own court 87-78.



Snaefell - Njardvik 83-79

No shocking result in a game when third ranked Snaefell (16-6) beat 6th ranked Njardvik (12-10) in Stykkisholmur 83-79. The hosts were ahead by 1 point but lost the second period ending it with a 8-point deficit before their 26-14 run, which allowed them to win the game. Snaefell players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Njardvik's players. American-Italian forward Ryan Amoroso (205-85, college: San Diego St.) fired a double-double by scoring 21 points and 19 rebounds for the winners. The former international forward Sigurdur Thorvaldsson (201-80) chipped in 22 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. American swingman Nigel Moore (195-81, college: Alabama A&M) produced 28 points and 7 rebounds and point guard Elvar Fridriksson (180-94) added 19 points and 4 assists respectively for lost side. Njardvik's coach Einar Johannson tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Snaefell moved-up to second place, which they share with Thor Thorl. Njardvik at the other side keeps the sixth position with ten games lost.

Skallagrimur - Thor Thorl 96-109

It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Thor Thorl's pressure prevailed and they won that period 34-26 extending their advantage to 13 points. Guard Gudmundur Jonsson (191-84) notched 29 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (made all of his eight free throws) to lead the effort and American guard Benjamin Smith (178-87, college: Jacksonville) supported him with 27 points and 8 assists (made all of his eight free throws). Very expected game when 9th ranked IR (6-16) lost on the road to fifth ranked Keflavik (14-8) 87-78. IR was ahead by 6 points at the halftime before a 49-34 second half run of Keflavik. Orvar Kristjansson to coach IR - May 2, 2013

IR Reykjavik has come to terms with Orvar Kristjansson to coach their team for next three seasons. Teitur Orlygsson to coach Stjarnan for one more year - May 2, 2013

Stjarnan coach Teitur Orlygsson will stay on as their coach for one more year, after signing an extension earlier this week. He said though that this would be his last season as the head coach of Stjarnan.Teitur signed with Stjarnan in December 2008 and produced a Cup in his first season, and managed to get another one this season. He has also taken Stjarnan forward, from reaching their first playoffs in 2009, to two finals appearances in 2011 and 2013.    [read more]
