Re-invigorated Irish Basketball League Gets a New Name and New Teams.

Irelands top basketball league is set to expand this season, adopting two new teams as well as a new name.

Formerly known as the SuperLeague, the Basketball Ireland Premier League is expanding from eight to ten teams with Templeogue of Dublin and Belfast Star joining the top flight for the 2013/14 campaign.

As well as a new name and teams, the Premier League will be directly linked with the Basketball Ireland Division One league, which until now had been run as a mostly separate entity.

Aside from the phased introduction of a promotion and relegation system between the divisions (details of which will be released shortly), there will also be an end-of-season crossover between the top Premier and Division One sides in the Champions Trophy competition.

Its very exciting to have these two divisions and the thought of the winners of the Premier and Division One possible facing off against each other in a final at the end of the season, said Basketball Ireland Secretary General/CEO Bernard OByrne.

We are also introducing a double leg cup format this season and a new league cup that will run alongside the Champions Trophy so teams from both the Premier and Division One that missed out on qualification for the Champions Trophy can get to play each other for a second national title in March, so its all very exciting for the upcoming season.

Fixtures for both divisions and further details about the restructured National Cup competitions will be released shortly.

Donaghy the star as Tralee Warriors crowned Men's Champions Trophy champions - 24 days ago
Kieran Donaghy (198-G/F-83) was the star of the show in Letterkenny today as Tralee swooped home to glory and scooped the silverware in the final of the Basketball Ireland Men's Champions Trophy. It was a thrilling finale in Donegal as Donaghy drove down the court and laid the ball up in style to send another epic battle with Regular Season champions, Templeogue, to overtime (66-66). That last gasp bucket was just one story of many that can be told from today's game, with Jason Killeen (2...   [read more]
