Franklin
Hassell

Hapoel Holon's 24-year-old 6-foot-8 power-forward Frank Hassell (203-F, college: ODU), who recently registered a monstrous showing of 20 points and 18 rebounds to help lead his team to victory, en route to earning Eurobasket.com's Player of the Week, and following his impressive seven-game double-double streak, sat down with Eurobasket. Playing his first year in Israel,Hassell is the guy that Shamir can trust on every given night and he is leading the league in Rebounds by a large margin with more than 13 boards per game and also leads the leagues in Double doubles. In a league that includes top rated rebounders like James Thomas, Shawn James,Diamon Simpson and others its incredible and
proves that he is ready to play for a top level club in Europe.

Talk about how and when you started hooping

"I started playing basketball when I was young. My dad and I were very close and he really pushed me to play at an early age, which I did behind good support from family and friends."

During your time at Old Dominion University, you played for a very physical team. How did that help develop your game?

"I've been a part of physical teams all my life. I played for very physical coaches and trainers so I'm use to it. I went to ODU because it fit my personality and my game. I felt (ODU) could help me better my game. I'm grateful to have learned from coach Blaine Taylor, whose been my teacher for four years."

At one point, you almost signed with the San Antonio Spurs. Why did that fall through?

"Bad luck and bad timing. I wasn't ready and it wasn't God's plan for me to play there at that time. Of course the NBA is the best league and everyone feels like they should be there, but some of us have to work harder to get there."

Your nickname is "Frank the Tank". How did it develop, did you it from the movie "Old School"?

"I'm the real 'Frank the Tank' (laughs), and yes, the nickname is from "Old School." In college, the fans gave me that nickname and it just stuck with me."

Let's talk about this season in Israel, Hapoel Holon. Why did you sign in Israel?

"I don't know (laughs). (Holon) offered me a contract and I agreed. It's been an up and down year, but my overall experience playing in the Israeli League is tough, but living in Israel is a good so I'm happy."

What is the worst and best moment for you so far this season?

"Worst moment of course is losing games. I found it tough returning to the United States for six days for my father's funeral. That was the toughest point of the year for me. Basketball will always be basketball, but losing (my father) hit me hard. The best moment of this year I don't think has came yet. I'm still working for it and waiting on it."

What's your secret to being known as Israel's Mr. double-double?

"I chose basketball as a profession so I work hard every day to try to be the best. The secret to anything in life is to work hard. I count my rebounds each game because I feel it gives my team the advantage to win. The more times you have the ball the greater your chances are of winning, so that's what I try to do."

What do you think about Holon's Head Coach Dan Shamir and the team's style of play?

"Holon is different. The system here is different from what I'm costumed to, but Holon has the best fans in Israel, and has good guys working in the organization. Coach (Dan) Shamir is well respected. I feel like he has a good reputation and is smart about how he does his job. At times players and coaches don't see eye to eye about certain things, and it's no different here, but our goals are the same. We both want to win and compete hard."

Where do you see Frank Hassell playing in the future? Israel?

"My future is wherever God takes me. I plan on playing ball for as long as my body lets me. I have hoop dreams of playing in the NBA just like every other player, and I will continue to work towards that goal. However, I won't turn down good opportunities to travel and play in other leagues if it's the right situation. Yes, I can see myself playing in Israel if the right situation presents itself."

"I'd like to give a shout out to my teammates Jerome (Dyson) and Shlomi (Harush) for representing Holon in the Israeli All-Star event. They're good players and are both doing a hell of a job for us this season."
