Rakim
Sanders
Israel's Gilboa-Galil has recently clinched the Balkan League title for back-to-back season, following a double-overtime thriller against Bulgarian hosts Levski Sofia.

Lior Liubin men overcame a double-digit deficit to beat Sofia for a second time in tournament finals history. Game Most Valuable Player went to Gilboa's victorious swingman, Rakim Sanders (193-G-89, college: Fairfield), 23, who toyed with the hosts en route to whopping double-double performance of 30 points and 17 rebounds.

"I feel real good that my teammates believed in me and gave me the opportunity to show what I can do and trusted in my game. Without them, I couldn't have done it," sanders told Eurobasket.

"It was very important for us to win the Balkan League. Every game and every practice we did during the season paid off, and winning the finals was a direct result of our trainings and preparation. The game against Levski showed our true character as a team. We never stopped playing hard, and stayed together all the time until the final buzzer."

"The European game is very different than in the US. As far as being an American, the game is much smaller and it requires a lot more thinking. It's more of a team concept. In the U.S. its a lot off 1-on-1. AT first, my biggest adaption was having to learn to put the ball on the floor before you take a step since it's called a travel overseas."

Did winning the Balkan title come to you as a surprise?

"I think we always had the potential to play good, but it took us time to figure out how to win games. We knew that we can do it all the time, we just kept going at it and stayed positive. In the beginning of the season we did everything in slow motion and now after we learned how to play with each other we're much better."

"Personally, I had the same routine. My teammates told me to stay confident and everything will workout. Coach Lior (Lubin) also told me to continue doing what I'm doing and it helped me.

How's life in Israel?

"People here treat me very nice. I love Israel and I'm glad I'm here. I like the country side. back home I was living in a city so it's good to change environments sometimes.

What's your goal for next season?

"I signed a 2-year-deal with Maccabi Tel Aviv and They loaned me to Galil/Gilboa for the season. My goal fro this season is to keep getting better both individually and as a team, and qualify for the Israeli final four, and make a run for the title. Still, I want to play on the highest level possible and the NBA is my ultimate goal. (Being in the NBA) is all about timing, and I think that I'll get my chance if I keep working hard. Euroleague ball is ok too because it's also considered one f the highest levels of basketball."

When did you start playing basketball?

"Growing up in Rhode Island, New York, I started becoming serious towards basketball in the seventh or eighth grade."

Are there any players you mimic your game after?

"I admire and try to learn from guys like Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James and Kevin Garnett. In Israel I prefer playing beyond the arc but I'm mostly playing the power forward position, so it allows me to work on my game and learn from many guys at multiple positions.
