Nazionale A Round 35: Naturhouse Ferrara defeats leader Torino - Apr 25, 2013

The games at this stage are more interesting as they can be crucial for the final standings in Regular Season. Despite we already know who is stronger and who is weaker, there may be still last minute susprises and upsets. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with defeat of the leader and favorites losing the games.

The most surprising game was another loss of top-ranked Torino (23-8) on the court of fourteenth ranked Naturhouse Ferrara on Thursday night. Visitors were defeated by Naturhouse Ferrara 76-68. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 23-12 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Naturhouse Ferrara forced 21 Torino turnovers. 35 personal fouls committed by Torino helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Power forward Michele Benfatto (205-85) orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points and 9 rebounds. Guard Michele Ferri (191-85) contributed with 19 points for the winners. point guard Lorenzo Gergati (188-84) answered with 22 points and 6 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for Torino. Torino's coach Stefano Pillastrini rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Newly promoted Naturhouse Ferrara maintains fourteenth place with 14-18 record. Torino lost fourth consecutive game. They still keep top position with eight games lost. Naturhouse Ferrara are looking forward to face bottom-ranked Bologna (#19) in Ozzano Emilia in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Torino will play at home against the league's second-placed Matera (#2) and will have a slim chance for a victory.
Important game to mention about took place in Castelletto. Seventh ranked Omegna (18-14) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging 3rd placed Castelletto (18-14) 70-67 in the fight for the third place. It was a great evening for naturalized Georgian Nika Metreveli (211-91, agency: Interperformances) who led his team to a victory scoring 24 points and 9 rebounds (perfect from the field making all nine shots !!!). Mohamed Toure helped adding 16 points and 6 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). Center Marco Pazzi (203-79) responded with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds. Omegna have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Casalpusterlengo and Castelletto. Omegna will play against Recanati (#12) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Castelletto will play against Mirandola (#13) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
An interesting game was also surprising road defeat of 5th ranked Agrigento in a game versus Treviglio (#8) 65-60. It was an exceptional evening for Davide Reati who led the winners and scored 18 points and 4 steals. Albano Chiarastella came up with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for Agrigento in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Treviglio (17-14) moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Lucca. Newly promoted Agrigento dropped to the sixth position with 15 games lost. Treviglio will meet Reggio Calabr. (#10) in the next round. Agrigento will play against Lucca (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very interesting game took place in Lucca. It ended with only one-point home defeat of higher ranked Lucca (17-14) to thirteenth ranked Mirandola (15-18) 80-79 on Thursday evening. The best player for the winners was Jordan Losi who scored 25 points and 4 assists. The victory was the third consecutive win for Mirandola. Newly promoted Mirandola maintains thirteenth place with 15-18 record. Lucca at the other side, also newcomer in the league, dropped to the seventh position with 14 games lost. Mirandola's next round opponent will be higher ranked Castelletto (#4) at home and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Casalpusterlengo (18-14) and Recanati (15-17), which took place in Recanati. 4th placed Casalpusterlengo lost to twelfth ranked Recanati in a road game 76-86 on Thursday. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Casalpusterlengo. Matteo Pierangeli orchestrated the victory by scoring 18 points (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). The victory was the third consecutive win for Recanati. They maintain twelfth place with 15-17 record. Loser Casalpusterlengo dropped to the third position with 14 games lost. Recanati will face higher ranked Omegna (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Casalpusterlengo will play against Chieti.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 35: San Severo was smashed by Firenze on the road 94-72. Matera won against Perugia on its own court 62-58. Reggio Calabr. managed to outperform Latina Basket in Reggio Calabria 91-83. Chieti recorded a loss to Bari at home 57-71.
The most impressive performance of 35th round was 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists by Alberto Chiumenti of Casalpusterlengo.

Firenze - San Severo 94-72

No shocking result in a game when ninth ranked Firenze (17-15) crushed at home 17th ranked Mazzeo San Severo (10-22) 94-72 on Thursday. The game was mostly controlled by Firenze. Mazzeo San Severo was better in second period 25-24. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Firenze dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Mazzeo San Severo's 34. They outrebounded Mazzeo San Severo 38-21 including 25 on the defensive glass. Firenze looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Mazzeo San Severo's players. Center Andrea Capitanelli (203-86) orchestrated the victory by scoring 12 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Forward Stefano Spizzichini (202-90) contributed with 18 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Firenze's coach Riccardo Paolini felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
