We bring you last week's top performances from Latvians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international small forward Davis Bertans (203-92, currently plays in Serbia). He led Partizan to a victory over the second-ranked Mega Vizura (1-1) crushing them 95-64 in the Serbian A League in Saturday night's game. Bertans was MVP of the game. He recorded 21 points and added 3 assists in 33 minutes on the court. BC Partizan MT:S Beograd (2-0) is placed sixth in Superliga group. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Bertans has relatively good stats this year: 13.5ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.5apg, 1.5bpg, 2FGP: 55.6%, 3FGP: 28.6% and FT: 83.3% in the two games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Latvian senior national team.

Ernests Kalve

   #2. Second place goes to former international forward Ernests Kalve (200-87, currently plays in Hungary). Kalve was the main contributor in Szolnok's victory against the third-ranked Kaposvari (17-10) 103-85 in the Hungarian A Division last Wednesday. He was the best player in that game. Kalve recorded 25 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Szolnoki Olajbanyasz (4-1) is placed sixth in Places 1-6 group. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Kalve's first season with the team. This year he has relatively solid stats: 11.5ppg, 5.0rpg, 1.3apg, 2FGP: 52.0%, 3FGP: 26.7% and FT: 61.5%. Kalve played for the Latvian national team in 2010.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Ivars Timermanis (203-82, currently plays in Romania). He contributed to Ploiesti's victory against the 12th-ranked Giurgiu (11-19) 89-76 in the Romanian Liga Nationala on Tuesday night. Timermanis was the top player that evening. He scored 28 points (!!!) and grabbed 4 rebounds in 34 minutes. CSU Asesoft Ploiesti (23-7) is placed third in the Liga Nationala. It was his team's tenth consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This year Timermanis' overall stats are: 9.6ppg, 3.1rpg, 2FGP: 47.5%, 3FGP: 44.0% and FT: 68.4% in the 28 games. He played for the Latvian national team six years ago.

   #4. Shooting guard Janis Blums (191-82, currently plays in Lithuania) was the major contributor in a Lietuvos rytas' victory against the closely-ranked Pieno Zvaigzdes (10-8) 85-69 in the Lithuanian LKL in Saturday night's game. Blums scored 13 points. Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (8-2) is placed seventh in the LKL. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This season Blums averages: 9.5ppg, 1.9rpg and 1.4apg. He is also Latvian national team player.

An experienced former international center Kaspars Kambala (206-78, agency: Alti Sport, college: UNLV, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Final Genclik (12-18) crushing them 96-74 in the Turkish TB2L (second division) last Saturday. Kambala was the top player that evening. He had a double-double by scoring 37 points and getting 16 rebounds in 38 minutes. Pi Koleji Ankara (13-17) is placed 12th in the TB2L. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Kambala belongs to league's top scorers (ranked #2) and also on the list of best rebounders (second place). He has individually a very good year with high stats. Kambala averages: 23.2ppg, 12.4rpg and 1.4apg in the 13 games. He used to play for the Latvian national team four years ago.

   #6. Point guard Janis Strelnieks (191-89, currently plays in Russia), who plays in the Russian PBL could not help one of league's weakest teams Spartak St.Petersburg (8-7) to beat Triumph Lyubertsy (6-9). Strelnieks scored 9 points. But Spartak St.Petersburg was edged 85-82 on the road by the higher-ranked Triumph Lyubertsy (#4). There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be extremely important. Strelnieks' total stats this season are: 5.8ppg and 1.7apg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

   #7. International point guard Edgars Jeromanovs (186-86, currently plays in Sweden), who plays in the Swedish Basketligan was not able to help Norrkoping Dolphins (26-2) in their last game. Despite Jeromanovs' very good performance the league leader Norrkoping Dolphins was edged 74-72 in Sundsvall by the one of league's weakest teams (#11) Dragons. He was the top scorer with 19 points. Jeromanovs also added 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 32 minutes. Jeromanovs has reliable stats this year: 12.1ppg, 2.7rpg, 4.2apg and 1.5spg in the 34 games. He is also Latvian national team player.

   #8. Forward Maris Laksa (205-81, college: Providence, currently plays in Estonia), who plays in the Estonian KML was not able to secure a victory for BC Rakvere (19-8) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Laksa's good performance the league leader BC Rakvere was crushed 94-64 in Tartu by the second-ranked TU/Rock. He recorded 12 points. Laksa's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. Laksa is currently fifth on the list of top scorers. This season he has very high stats. Laksa averages: 15.4ppg, 3.1rpg, 1.3apg and 1.1spg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2003.

   #9. International guard Armands Skele (192-83, currently plays in Estonia) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Hito/Johvi (2-25) 85-66 in the Estonian KML on Saturday night. Skele recorded 6 points, 4 assists and 3 steals in only 11 minutes. BC Kalev/Cramo Tallinn (14-2) is placed third in the KML. It was his team's 11th consecutive victory in a row. The Regular Season already ended. This year Skele's total stats are: 9.3ppg, 4.9rpg, 2.5apg and 1.1spg in the 11 games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #10. Center Kaspars Cipruss (210-82, currently plays in Ukraine), who plays in the Ukrainian Superleague couldn't help BC Odessa (14-25) in their last game on Friday. Despite Cipruss' very good performance BC Odessa was edged 69-66 at home by the much higher-ranked Azovmash (#3). He was the top scorer with 15 points. Cipruss also added 6 rebounds. The Regular Season already ended. Cipruss has averaged so far 6.6ppg and 4.2rpg. He is a former international player as five years ago he still played for the Latvian senior national team.

   #11. Former international center Raitis Grafs (208-81, college: Valparaiso, currently plays in Estonia) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked TTU crushing them 81-61 in the Estonian KML last Tuesday. Grafs had a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 12 rebounds in 27 minutes. Grafs is currently seventh on the list of best rebounders with 7.2rpg. This year he also averages: 11.9ppg and 1.3apg in the 27 games. Grafs used to play for the Latvian national team three years ago.

   #12. Former international guard Kristaps Valters (190-81, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a Baloncesto Fuenlabrada's surprising victory against the fifth-ranked Gescrap BB 90-82 in the Spanish ACB on Sunday night. He scored 11 points. Valters has averaged so far 9.4ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.9apg. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2009.

   #13. International power forward Rolands Freimanis (210-88, currently plays in Italy) helped Sutor Montegranaro win their game against the league outsider Angelico Biella 86-73 in the Italian SerieA in Monday night's game. Freimanis recorded 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 16 minutes. He has averaged so far 6.0ppg and 3.3rpg in the 23 games. Freimanis is also Latvian national team player.

   #14. Former U20 international center Zintis Plivda (206-88, currently plays in Belarus), who plays in the Belarusian Premier League couldn't help Rubon (12-16) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance the third-placed Rubon was defeated 83-69 on their home court in Vitebsk by the leading Grodno-93 in the Championship group. Plivda was the second best scorer with 16 points. He also added 8 rebounds. Plivda is currently fourth on the league's list of best rebounders. He has very reliable stats this season: 11.4ppg and 9.1rpg. Plivda used to play for the Latvian U20 national team back in 2008.

   #15. Former University international guard Martins Kravcenko (192-85, currently plays in Ukraine), who plays in the Ukrainian Superleague couldn't help Mykolaiv (6-6) in their last game. Despite his good performance Mykolaiv was edged 83-80 on their home court in Mykolaiv by the lower-ranked (#9) Kryvbasbasket. Kravcenko scored 10 points and added 4 passes in 29 minutes. He has averaged so far 6.4ppg, 2.2rpg and 1.7apg in the 38 games. Kravcenko used to play for the Latvian university national team four years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Gary Gandel (203-G/F-80, currently plays in Israel), who plays in the Israeli National League (second division) could not help Hod Hasharon (17-7) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his good performance Hod Hasharon was defeated 78-71 at home by the leading Ironi Nes-Ziona. Gandel was the second best scorer with 14 points. He also added 7 rebounds. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Gandel averaged so far 11.5ppg, 4.3rpg, 3.2apg and 1.5spg. He has a dual citizenship: Latvian and Israeli.

   #2. Matiss Sakne (191-G-91, currently plays in Denmark) was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Horsens IC (23-9) in their game against Bakken (25-7) in the Danish Ligaen. Sakne recorded only 4 points in 18 minutes. Horsens IC was crushed 97-71 on their home court in Horsens by the second-ranked Bakken. Sakne has averaged so far 3.5ppg, 1.4rpg and 1.1apg in the 30 games he played so far.

Valmiera - Liepaja/Triobet 101-70 Valmiera cruised past Liepaja/Triobet in the quarterfinal series opener. The game without a history. Valmiera led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Liepaja/Triobet's 38. Turiba - Jelgava 81-94 Jelgava outgunned Turiba on the road to seal their LBL2 Finals birth. The game without a history. Jelgava led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 20-of-22 free shots (90.9 percent) during the game. Jelgava looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. 26 personal fouls committed by Turiba helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities.
