Here is the weekly review of the top performing Latvian players, who play currently abroad.


Ernests Kalve

   #1. This week's number one is former international forward Ernests Kalve (200-87, currently plays in Hungary). He led Szolnok to a victory over the fourth-ranked Kaposvari (1-3) 103-85 in the Hungarian A Division in Wednesday night's game. Kalve was MVP of the game. He recorded 25 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 24 minutes on the court. Szolnoki Olajbanyasz (3-1) is placed second in Places 1-6 group. It's Kalve's first season with the team. Kalve has relatively good stats this year: 13.0ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 52.4%, 3FGP: 36.4% and FT: 71.4% in the three games he played so far. He played for the Latvian senior national team three years ago.

Janis Blums

   #2. Second place goes to an international shooting guard Janis Blums (191-82, currently plays in VTB United League). Blums was the main contributor in a Lietuvos rytas' victory against the ninth-ranked Azovmash (3-15) 75-56 in the VTB United League last Sunday. He was the best player in that game. Blums scored 18 points. Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (9-9) is placed seventh in group A. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. The Regular Season already ended in the VTB United League. This season Blums has relatively solid stats: 12.3ppg, 1.6rpg, 2.1apg, 2FGP: 37.0%, 3FGP: 48.4%(45-93) and FT: 87.2%. He is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

Davis Bertans

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international small forward Davis Bertans (203-92, currently plays in Adriatic League). Bertans was the major contributor in Partizan's victory against one of league's weakest teams Szolnok (9-17) 83-69 in the Adriatic League on Saturday night. He scored 14 points in 27 minutes. BC Partizan MT:S Beograd (16-10) is placed fourth in the Adriatic League. Bertans' team will play only one more game in the Adriatic League Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This year Bertans averages: 9.4ppg, 2.6rpg, 3FGP: 44.5% and FT: 75.0% in the 26 games. He is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

Kaspars Kambala

   #4. An experienced center Kaspars Kambala (206-78, agency: Alti Sport, college: UNLV, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to a Pi Koleji's victory against the closely-ranked Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyesi (13-16) 82-75 in the Turkish TB2L (second division) in Friday night's game. Kambala was the top player that evening. He recorded a double-double by scoring 34 points and getting 18 rebounds. Kambala also added 2 blocks. Pi Koleji Ankara (12-17) is placed 13th in the TB2L. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Kambala has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 22.1ppg, 12.1rpg and 1.3apg. Kambala used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2009.

   #5. Former international forward Ivars Timermanis (203-82, currently plays in Romania) helped Ploiesti win their game against the 13th-ranked Timba Timosoara (8-21) crushing them 107-85 in the Romanian Liga Nationala last Thursday. He was the top player that evening. Timermanis scored 22 points in 26 minutes. CSU Asesoft Ploiesti (22-7) is placed third in the Liga Nationala. It was his team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. This year Timermanis' overall stats are: 8.9ppg and 3.1rpg in the 27 games. He used to play for the Latvian national team six years ago.

Armands Skele

   #6. Guard Armands Skele (192-83, currently plays in VTB United League), who plays in Estonia could not help Kalev/Cramo (3-15) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Skele's good performance the tenth-placed Kalev/Cramo was defeated in an overtime 85-81 at home by the higher-ranked BC Astana (#5) in the group A of VTB United League. He scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. The Regular Season already ended in the VTB United League. Skele has reliable stats this season: 10.5ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.8apg and 1.2spg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

Maris Laksa

   #7. Former international forward Maris Laksa (205-81, college: Providence, currently plays in Estonia) helped BC Rakvere win their game against the seventh-ranked KK Parnu (11-14) 80-77 in the Estonian KML last Saturday. He scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. BC Rakvere Tarvas (20-9) is placed first in the KML. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Laksa is ranked third on the list of the top scorers in the league. This season he has very high stats. Laksa averages: 15.5ppg, 3.1rpg, 1.3apg and 1.1spg. He used to play for the Latvian national team ten years ago.

   #8. Power forward Rolands Freimanis (210-88, currently plays in Italy) helped Sutor Montegranaro win their game against the sixth-ranked Armani Milano (14-10) 85-71 in the Italian SerieA on Sunday night. Freimanis scored 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a mere 16 minutes. Sutor Montegranaro (9-15) is placed 13th in the SerieA. This year Freimanis' total stats are: 6.0ppg and 3.1rpg in the 22 games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #9. Former international swingman Juris Umbrasko (197-79, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Maris Laksa and both played together in the last Estonian KML game. Umbrasko helped BC Rakvere win their game against the seventh-ranked KK Parnu (11-14) 80-77. He scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Umbrasko's stats this season are: 11.9ppg, 4.8rpg, 2.0apg and 1.2spg. He used to play for the Latvian national team five years ago.

   #10. Point guard Janis Strelnieks (191-89, currently plays in VTB United League) was not able to help Spartak St.Petersburg (12-6) in their game against BC Donetsk (9-9) in the VTB United League. Strelnieks cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points and added 5 passes in 27 minutes. Spartak St.Petersburg (#4) lost 80-88 on the road to the lower-ranked (#6) BC Donetsk in the group A of VTB United League. There are only two games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. Strelnieks has averaged so far 7.3ppg, 1.4rpg and 3.2apg in the 18 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

   #11. Former international guard Kristaps Valters (190-81, currently plays in Spain) helped Baloncesto Fuenlabrada win their game against the closely-ranked Blancos de Rueda 84-74 in the Spanish ACB on Saturday night. Valters scored 9 points and added 5 passes. Valters has averaged so far 9.4ppg, 2.2rpg and 3.0apg. He used to play for the Latvian national team four years ago.

   #12. International point guard Edgars Jeromanovs (186-86, currently plays in Sweden) helped Norrkoping Dolphins win their game against the fifth-ranked Boras Basket 79-72 in the Swedish Basketligan in Friday night's game. Jeromanovs scored 11 points and added 3 assists in 33 minutes. Jeromanovs' stats this year are: 12.1ppg, 2.8rpg, 4.3apg and 1.4spg in the 32 games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #13. Former international swingman Mareks Jurevicus (197-85, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian Lega2 (second division) was not able to secure a victory for Prima Veroli (8-15) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Jurevicus' very good performance the bottom-ranked Prima Veroli was defeated 81-72 in Barcellona by the second-ranked Sigma. He was the second best scorer with 15 points. Jurevicus averaged so far 14.1ppg, 3.7rpg, 1.5apg and 1.3spg. He used to play for the Latvian national team two years ago.

   #14. International forward Mareks Mejeris (208-91, agency: Players Group, currently plays in Spain) helped CB Clavijo win their game against the league leader River Andorra 79-72 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) on Friday night. Mejeris scored 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 22 minutes. Mejeris has averaged so far 9.9ppg and 5.4rpg in the 23 games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #15. Former U20 international center Zintis Plivda (206-88, currently plays in Belarus), who plays in the Belarusian Premier League couldn't help Rubon (11-15) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Plivda's good performance Rubon (#4) was defeated 84-79 in Osipovichi by the higher-ranked Svisloch (#3) in the Championship group. He recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 11 rebounds. Plivda averaged so far 10.9ppg and 9.2rpg. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team five years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Martins Berkis (198-F-85, currently plays in Hungary), who plays in the Hungarian A Division could not help Marso NYKK (9-16) in their last game. Despite Berkis' very good performance Marso NYKK (#5) lost 82-88 at home to the higher-ranked (#3) PVSK Pannon in the Places 7-13 group. He was the second best scorer with 26 points. Berkis also added 8 rebounds in 40 minutes. There are only three games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game will be critical. Berkis' stats this year are: 14.4ppg, 5.4rpg, 2.1apg and 1.6spg in the 25 games he played so far.

   #2. Edmunds Tukiss (200-SF-89, currently plays in Germany), who plays in the German ProB (third division) was not able to help Dragons Rhoendorf (19-3) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Tukiss' good performance Dragons Rhoendorf was defeated 77-73 on the road by the much lower-ranked BSW Sixers (#8) in the Group South. He scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Tukiss has averaged so far 8.8ppg and 2.6rpg.

   #3. Experienced Gary Gandel (203-G/F-80, currently plays in Israel) was not able to secure a victory for Hod Hasharon (17-6) in their game against Ironi Kiryat Ata (13-10) in the Israeli National League (second division). He scored 7 points. Hod Hasharon was defeated 86-76 in Kiryat Ata by the lower-ranked Ironi (#7). There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. Gandel averaged so far 11.8ppg, 4.2rpg, 3.6apg and 1.4spg. He has a dual citizenship: Latvian and Israeli.

Dragons add Elksnis to their roster, ex Jelgava - 13 hours ago
Dragons Rhoendorf (ProB) added to their roster 25-year old Latvian center Ronalds Elksnis (203-92, college: John Brown). He played last season at BK Jelgava/BJSS in Latvian LBL2. In 34 games he recorded 11.7ppg, 6.4rpg, 2.3apg and 1.0spg. Elksnis helped them to win the LBL D2 title. A very spectacular season in his career as he was voted to Eurobasket.com All-Latvian LBL D2 Honorable Mention. Riga Ghetto Basket (LAT) won the Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest 3x3 Challenger after edging out Zemun Master (SRB) 13-12 in the final in Bucharest, Romania on August 12-13. Just 2 weeks after shining at the Tinkoff Moscow Open, the Latvian team won their second Challenger of the season. Lauris Blaus (ex Valmiera) agreed terms with Energa Czarni - 2 days ago
Energa Czarni Slupsk (PLK) inked 27-year old Latvian center Lauris Blaus (208-110kg-90). He played most recently at Valmiera/ORDO in Latvian LBL league. In 40 games he recorded 9.9ppg and 4.8rpg last season. Blaus helped them to make it to the semifinals. He also played 16 games in Baltic League where he averaged 10.1ppg, 4.8rpg and 1.3apg.
