The games at this stage are more interesting as they can be crucial for the final standings in Regular Season. Despite we already know who is stronger and who is weaker, there may be still last minute susprises and upsets. Host teams show no mercy winning all games. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with change at the leadership position and extra overtimes.

LBL round 37 caused change at the leadership position. Twelfth defeat of league's leader Jekabpils (19-12) against third ranked Valmiera (20-12) 96-92 in overtime was the most important game of the last round. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 5 points after three quarters before their 20-15 charge, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time and get a 4-point victory in overtime. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international guard Raimonds Gabrans (185-84) who helped to win the game recording 23 points and 9 assists. Forward Janis Berzins (202-93, agency: Players Group) contributed with 22 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. American point guard P.J. Hill jr. (182-87, college: Ohio St.) answered with 31 points and 5 rebounds for Jekabpils. Valmiera have a solid series of four victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. Newly promoted Jekabpils dropped to the third place with 12 games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Valmiera. Jekabpils will play next round against strong VEF Riga trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Valmiera will try to continue on its current victory against seventh ranked Jelgava on the road.

The most impressive performance of 37th round was 29 points, 5 rebounds and 12 assists by Earl Rowland of VEF Riga.


Liepaja - U18 119-70

No shocking result in a game when eighth ranked Liepaja (13-18) crushed at home bottom-ranked U18 (1-18) 119-70 on Wednesday. The game without a history. Liepaja led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to U18's 34. They outrebounded U18 54-24 including a 35-12 advantage in defensive rebounds. Liepaja shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 54.5 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists comparing to just 6 passes made by U18's players. It was a very good performance for American guard Pierce Caldwell (191-88, college: Incarnate Word, agency: Alti Sport) who helped to win the game recording 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. point guard Ingus Jakovics (185-93) contributed with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Caldwell is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Liepaja players scored in double figures. Center Andzejs Pasecniks (211-95) answered with 17 points and 6 rebounds and guard Davis Geks (190-95) added 18 points in the effort for U18. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Liepaja maintains eighth place with 13-18 record. U18 lost fourteenth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay dead last with 18 lost games. Liepaja will face Turiba (#10) on the road in the next round.

Very expected game when 9th ranked Jurmala (11-20) was smashed on the road by fourth ranked VEF Riga (15-1) 116-74 on Tuesday. The game without a history. VEF Riga led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 27-of-30 free shots (90.0 percent) during the game. VEF Riga forced 20 Jurmala turnovers and outrebounded them 39-21 including a 29-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Jurmala was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for American-Bulgarian guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 29 points, 5 rebounds and 12 assists (perfect from the field making all ten shots !!!). American forward Will Daniels (203-86, college: Rhode Island) contributed with 20 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Forward Ervins Jonats (203-91) answered with 13 points and 6 rebounds and forward Janis Dilevka (200-88) added 10 points in the effort for Jurmala. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Jurmala's coach Jevgenijs Kosuskins gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. VEF Riga have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. Defending champion maintains fourth place with 15-1 record. Jurmala lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with 20 games lost. VEF Riga will face higher ranked Jekabpils (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Jurmala will play against Ventspils (#5).
