LBL Round 40: Barons kvartals beat Jekabpils in the most crucial game of the week - Apr 14, 2013

The Regular Season in LBL just ended.

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Jekabpils. Second ranked Barons kvartals faced one of their biggest challengers Jekabpils. Guests from Riga (21-13) defeated host Jekabpils (19-15) 86-79. American guard Jamar Diggs (187-88, college: Wofford, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) fired 21 points and 5 assists (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. Forward Maris Gulbis (202-85, agency: Players Group) chipped in 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Barons kvartals' coach Martins Gulbis used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American center Todd O'Brien (213-89, college: UAB) produced a double-double by scoring 18 points and 14 rebounds for lost side. Barons kvartals maintains second position with 21-13 record behind leader Valmiera. Jekabpils lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keep the third place with 15 games lost.
The game in Jelgava supposed to be also worth to mention about. 6th ranked Latvijas Universitate (16-18) played at the court of seventh ranked Jelgava (14-20). Jelgava smashed Latvijas Universitate 109-67. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Latvijas Universitate. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Kristaps Kanbergs (190-88) who helped to win the game recording 24 points and 4 assists. Arturs Duselis contributed with 23 points (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners. Forward Rihards Zebergs (193-92) replied with 16 points for Latvijas Universitate. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Jelgava maintains seventh position with 14-20 record. Latvijas Universitate at the other side keeps the sixth place with 18 games lost.
A very close game took place in Liepaja between Jurmala and Liepaja. Ninth ranked Jurmala (13-21) got a very close victory on the road over 8th ranked Liepaja (13-21). Jurmala managed to escape with a 2-point win 79-77 in the fight for the eighth place. Worth to mention a great performance of Roberts Mednis who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. At the losing side Aleksey Adediran responded with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds. Liepaja's coach Guntis Endzels tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Jurmala moved-up to eighth place, which they share with defeated Liepaja. Liepaja lost third consecutive game.
The game with biggest result difference took place in Riga. Local VEF Riga (19-1) outscored 11th ranked U18 (1-19) 113-61. The winners were led by Justin Hamilton who had that evening a double-double by scoring 23 points and 14 rebounds. U18's coach Nikolajs Mazurs gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. VEF Riga have an impressive 14-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains fourth position with 19-1 record. U18 lost fifteenth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay dead last with 19 lost games.

In the last game of round 40 Turiba was crushed by Ventspils in a road game 95-66.
The best stats of 40th round was 26 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists by Gatis Jahovics of VEF Riga.

Jelgava led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 22-of-27 charity shots (81.5 percent) during the game. Jelgava forced 25 Latvijas Universitate turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Latvijas Universitate's players. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Kristaps Kanbergs (190-88) who helped to win the game recording 24 points and 4 assists. Forward Arturs Duselis (201-89) contributed with 23 points (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners. Four Jelgava players scored in double figures. A very close game took place in Liepaja between Jurmala and Liepaja. Ninth ranked Jurmala (13-21) got a very close victory on the road over 8th ranked Liepaja (13-21). Jurmala managed to escape with a 2-point win 79-77 in the fight for the eighth place. The guests trailed by 1 point after three quarters before their 22-19 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Jurmala dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Liepaja's 24. Jurmala forced 19 Liepaja turnovers. Worth to mention a great performance of center Roberts Mednis (204-89) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds and forward Ervins Jonats (203-91) who added 22 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side Nigerian-Russian center Aleksey Adediran (204-82, college: Binghamton) responded with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds and forward Renars Magone (201-92) scored 14 points. Four Liepaja players scored in double figures. Liepaja's coach Guntis Endzels tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Ventspils - Turiba 95-66

There was no surprise when 10th ranked Turiba (11-23) was crushed on the road by fifth ranked Ventspils (17-3) 95-66. The game without a history. Ventspils led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Turiba's 30 and made 23-of-26 charity shots (88.5 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Turiba 40-23 including a 28-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Ventspils players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. The winners were led by international center Martins Meiers (208-91) who scored that evening 16 points and 7 rebounds and international forward Janis Timma (201-92, agency: FCM) supported him with 16 points. Five Ventspils players scored in double figures. Even 17 points and 5 rebounds (made all of his ten free throws !!!) by forward Karlis Apsitis (200-92) did not help to save the game for Turiba. Forward Martins Motivans (200-88) added 8 points for lost side. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Ventspils have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fifth position with 17-3 record. Turiba lost third consecutive game. They keep the tenth place with 23 games lost.

VEF Riga players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by U18's players. 27 personal fouls committed by U18 helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The winners were led by American center Justin Hamilton (210-90, college: Iowa St.) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 23 points and 14 rebounds and the former international forward Gatis Jahovics (200-84) supported him with 26 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. In 25 games he had 10.0ppg, 7.8rpg, 1.5apg, 1.0spg and 1.2bpg. Rozitis helped them to make it to the semifinals. BK Ogre (LBL) confirmed in their roster 25-year old point guard Marcis Vitols (183-88kg-92). He has played there for the last two seasons. In 30 LBL games he had 9.8ppg, 2.7rpg, 4.9apg and 1.0spg last season. Vitols also played 11 games in Baltic League where he recorded 10.5ppg, 2.6rpg, 3.3apg and 1.1spg. Dragons Rhoendorf (ProB) added to their roster 25-year old Latvian center Ronalds Elksnis (203-92, college: John Brown). He played last season at BK Jelgava/BJSS in Latvian LBL2. In 34 games he recorded 11.7ppg, 6.4rpg, 2.3apg and 1.0spg. Elksnis helped them to win the LBL D2 title.
