22-year old guard Zanis Peiners (204-G-90, agency: Interperformances) had an amazing evening in the last round for LU and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 31. He got a double-double of 18 points and 11 assists, while his team outclassed U18 (#11, 1-15) with 30-point margin 92-62. LU is placed at 6th position in Latvian league. LU is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 12-16 record. Peiners has many years of experience at LU, through which he has constantly improved. Peiners has impressive league stats. He is league's best scorer averaging so far 20.3ppg. Peiners is in league's top in assists (5th best: 3.4apg) and averages solid 53.2% FGP.
Second best performed player last round was Atis Ozols (199-F-81) of Jurmala. He is a forward in his 3rd season at Jurmala. In the last game Ozols recorded impressive 32 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Bad luck as Jurmala was edged by the higher-ranked Jekabpils (#1, 17-9) 88-84. This loss caused Jurmala to drop to 7th position in the standings. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 11-16 record. Ozols is one of the most experienced players at Jurmala and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 14.7ppg (#8). He also registered 4.7 boards per game.
Third place about best performers goes to another Jurmala's star - center Roberts Mednis (204-C-89). Mednis scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Despite Mednis' great performance Jurmala lost 77-86 to Liepaja (11-16). But his team cannot count on just these two top stars as they also need help of the other teammates. The chances of Jurmala ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 16 games, recording just eleven victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Mednis could help Jurmala to bring them higher in the standings. Mednis has a great season in Latvia. After 27 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 6.9rpg (8th best).
Other top performing players last week: 4. Michal Hlebowicki (204-C-76) of Jekabpils - 22 points and 10 rebounds 5. Arturs Bricis (196-SG-92) of Liepaja - 16 points and 8 rebounds 6. Rinalds Sirsnins (186-PG-85) of Jekabpils - 17 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists 7. Roberts Mednis (204-C-89) of Jurmala - 12 points and 3 rebounds 8. Ken Brown (185-G-89) of Jurmala - 18 points and 6 assists 9. Artis Ate (191-G-89) of Liepaja - 14 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists 10. Andzejs Pasecniks (211-C-95) of U18 - 17 points and 9 rebounds
The Player of the week is choosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3*(REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4*(2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3*(2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3*(3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
