Linas Kleiza
Toronto Raptors released 28-year old Lithuanian international small forward Linas Kleiza (203-113kg-85, college: Missouri). Kleiza played there also last season. In 20 NBA games he had 7.4ppg and 2.6rpg.
In 2005 he was drafted by Portland Trail Blazers in first round (27 th overall). Kleiza attended University of Missouri. It is his ninth season in pro basketball. Kleiza was also voted Eurobasket.com All-Olympic Games Honorable Mention in 2008 and 2012. His team won Greek Cup in 2010.
He has been also a member of Lithuanian international program for some years. Kleiza has regularly played for since 2006 and previously for U21 National Team back in 2003. He represented Lithuania at the Olympic Games in London (United Kingdon) last year. His stats at that event were 6 games: 13.5ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.7apg, FGP: 50.0%, 3PT: 20.0%, FT: 78.6%.
Kleiza has played previously professionally in other NBA team (Denver Nuggets) and Greece (Olympiacos).
He could be described: For his age, he has a very powerful build. He is all about hustle and laying it on the line. He has good quickness in the half-court.
Big, strong Lithuanian who led Lithuanian U-16 NT in 2001 European U-16 championship and was the best scorer and rebounder in championship with 21.7 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. Enjoys the physical battle inside despite his size. Plays with good intensity. Very strong under the basket and also has touch around the basket. Can hit the medium range jumper. Has great hands, and superb upper body strength. Was pretty dominant in Junior competitions and even has played at center, but if he stops growing he will face some problems adjusting to Senior competitions, as he lacks size to become a top PF.
World Championships U18 '03 comments (by Yarone Arbel):
The best scorer, and the best 2FG% shooter, of the championship, is coming from Lithuania, and as many other players in the history and present of Lithuanian basketball he moved to the USA to play in High School and continue to college. The combination of the European basics in Lithuania, and the side dish of the athletic USA style surely give good results. Kleiza is a very good example. When needed he takes the game on him, and just does whatever he wishes. A true winner that knows to elevate his game when it matters. Constantly fighting on court. One year younger than the generation that played in the Championship, so keep that in mind too. 42 pts and 10 rbs in the SF qualifying match vs. Puerto Rico, 27 pts, 13 rbs, 4 st and 3 bl in the huge win over Greece in the Semi Finals.
He has a strong body and he uses it very well. With only 203 cm it's hard to see him make it to the NBA as a power forward, but in Europe he will be great in that wherever needed. If he becomes a bigger threat from downtown, improve his dribbling skills and work on his quickness, or in other words become more of a Small Forward, the NBA option will be much closer.
He has a very consistent mid-range shot, can play facing the basket and post up. Most of the teams didn't know how to handle him. Give him the ball in the paint and he will use his strong body to nail the 2 points. Stop his penetration and he can stop and nail a mid-range shot. Timing and good position helps him a lot to his rebounding skills, when there's almost no difference between his offense and defense rebounding skills. Both equally good
