Misko Lucic
Teodo Tivat had a succesfull season in both BIBL and Erste basketball league and one of the most meritorious people for its successes in the past decade, Misko Lucic , the General Manager of Teodo Tivat talks to eurobasket.com about basketball beginnings in Tivat, last season and ambitions for next year.

Mr. Lucic, how did Teodo story begin? Who are the most deserving people for the fact that basketball is sport number 1 in Tivat nowadays?

In June 2004, a few of us basketball enthusiasts agreed that it was time to stop a ten-year organized basketball break in Tivat and found a club for senior players . However, we did not lack players because two local basketball academies have been working very well with kids and producing many interesting players, Constituent Assembly confirmed that we had everything we needed for a solid beginning. There were eleven of us so I would not point out any individual.

In the 2009/2010 season for the first time you played in the first division led by an experienced coach Milan Rondovic and proved that you deserved a place in the highest ranks of the competition. How difficult was to organize the club and prepare the conditions for Division I requirements? How did you gain the trust of players who came to an unknown club with no great tradition?

I think the most important thing was that from very beginning we established clear goals and realistic budget for Teodo, with the support of stable and the municipality of Tivat. For us was important to show to sponsors and supporters some results and prove that we are an ambitious club willing to make progress and to honor deals. Players have recognized this and now we have no problems during negotiations with players because as people use to say- positive vibrations spread fast.

When we talk about the success of Teodo we must point out great merit of Milan Rondovic who with his big experience and basketball knowledge injected the necessary security and confidence that our team needed in Division I. He put together a good group of players and in the first season, we have secured the placed in Superleague and from that moment we have achieved that result every season. Milan Rondovic has great credit for the rise of Teodo.

As for tradition, I must note that Teodo continues the tradition of successful basketball clubs starting with Arsenal that played the first basketball game in Montenegro back in 1945 continuing with successful Partizan Tivat, and Tivat. Teodo next year celebrates ten years since its founding and I hope that this good run will no longer interrupt.

Teodo had a very successfully season. In the championship you reached the semi-finals where you were close to reach the finals but Sutjeska stopped you in a tied finish while in the Cup, which was held in Tivat, you troubled a lot the powerhouse and eternal champions of Montenegro- Buducnost. Could you give your opinion on the season in the Erste basketball league?

The season was exceptional, actually beyond expectations but we can say that for all the previous ones without any exceptions...
We finished third in the regular season, third in the Super League, reached semi-finals, participated in the top 6 of BIBL. Our organization was once again the best sports team in the city, which was not easy. We also have received public recognition for successfully organizing of the National Cup and our results in the BIBL were praised by the League Board of directors.

As you have already mentioned, besides the good results of the Club in the domestic championship, the season 2012/2013 will be remembered as a historical one because Teodo for the first time played in an international competition-Balkan League. How are you satisfied with the performance on the international scene and do you think that playing in the BIBL was the right thing for the club?

Participation in the BIBL was an excellent decision. We proved that we were good enough to participate in such a demanding competition (two continents, seven countries), to achieve good results without endangering our results in domestic league. We are the first sports club ever from Tivat that participated in any Olympic sport internationally and I hope that with the support of our sponsors we will continue to be successfull outside the borders of Montenegro.

Teodo was also in the last season recognized by its fans, Teodosi, and a packed gym. How good is your cooperation with the fans and do you expect the growing trend (number of fans) to continue?

One of the objectives clearly defined sporting goals is to primarily fight for a crowded Zupa hall. We have a full sense of responsibility towards the fans and we are trying to make them feel it. Teodosi are our great satisfaction and there no greater reward for Teodo players and myself than to see many fans in Zupa hall and hear their support songs.

Tivat, a coastal city in booming, every summer is the host of different age groups of Montenegrin national teams, and in June is organized the traditional camp for young players. Do you think the municipality of Tivat gives sufficient support to the development of basketball?

Of course, the support of our municipality to basketball development is something that we are particularly proud on. We like the attention that basketball receives is in our town and we will try to keep that trust.

Basketball federation of Montenegro (KSCG) has recognized that Tivat is an area in which our young national team members can have all the requirements for good preparations. We will try to always be a good host, especially to our national team members. In June we had our traditional camp and our coaching staff had the opportunity to review abilities of younger players from Tivat and the region, as well as to try to select some candidates for the next years squad. The goal is to keep promoting this camp.

You extended contract with coach, Slobodan Savovic after a good season and it was a proof that you were happy with his work. What are the expectations from the coaching staff in the forthcoming period?

Coach Savovic was brought to the club as a young and promising coach who proved his potential in his first season here. He has full support of the Board members and we expect from him full commitment to the results of Teodo in the upcoming period. One set of priority tasks will be more engagement in the work with youth categories so that we could have future more players from our own basketball academy. Keeping that in mind we will strengthen human resources and provide better conditions to coach Savovic to work with youth selections.

The club last season boosted its roster by bringing several experienced players from the domestic league, and the first American in the history of the club, Manuel Johnson (201-F-83, college: Tex.A&M-Comm.). Did they live up to the expectations do you already have plans for reinforcements for next season?

First of all we have to see who is going to stay with us next season. It is certain that we will have to face with the departure of the two leaders from last year, point guard Marko Mijovic (188-PG-87) and center Aleksandar Radulovic (207-C-84). But we are happy because both of them found good clubs and will receive more appropriate financial rewards for undeniable quality they have. We need to find replacements for them first, plus a versatile 2/3 player. Our desire is also to hire some of the young Montenegrin players who have the quality and want to develop their skills in both domestic and Balkan league. We will primarily follow players from U19 and U21 national team of Montenegro but we will wait to see them finish important international competition designed for this summer.

Finally, we have a lot of contacts, but also plenty of time to choose the best. What we pay attention the most is good character of players and loyalty to the club and Tivat. It was the reason why we extended our first American Manuel Johnson, who has gained respect of all basketball fans in Tivat.

As the next season you will compete again in the Balkan League, as well as in the Erste basketball league, could you tell us more about the club's ambitions for the future?

We will try to repeat the success we had last season. We believe that we belong among the four best teams in the domestic league. Placement in the second round of BIBL is difficult to achieve but for us is important to try again. Of course, support from the stands is a priority even next year. We will try to keep building up the brand Teodo as a stable and reliable sport club.

Thank you for the interview, Mr. Lucic, eurobasket.com congratulates you on the great season you had and wish best of luck in your future work.

Thank you for the lovely wishes. I will take this opportunity to publicly recommend your web site which helps us a lot in tracking developments in the basketball world.
