Here is the weekly review of the top performing Polish players, who play currently abroad.


Maciej Lampe

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Maciej Lampe (211-85, currently plays in Euroleague). He led his Spanish team Caja Laboral to a victory against the eighth-ranked Besiktas (0-10) 83-73 in the Euroleague in Friday night's game. Lampe recorded 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 22 minutes on the court. Caja Laboral Vitoria (5-5) is placed sixth in group F. It was his team's first victory after five consecutive loses. There are only four games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be critical. Lampe belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #4 with 6.2rpg. He also averaged so far 13.2ppg, 2FGP: 48.4%, 3FGP: 31.6% and FT: 77.6% in the 20 games he played so far. Lampe has a dual citizenship: Polish and Swedish. He is currently a member of the Polish senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Thomas Kelati (195-82, agency: Beo Basket, college: Washington St., currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB. Kelati could not help Valencia Basket (13-10) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Valencia Basket was defeated 72-66 on the road by the much lower-ranked Cajasol (#14). Kelati was the top scorer with 19 points. Kelati has relatively good stats this season: 11.3ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 59.1%(26-44), 3FGP: 42.9% and FT: 86.4%. He is another player who holds two passports: Eritrean and Polish. Ex-BOT Turow Zgorzelec player is in the roster of the Polish senior national team.

   #3. The Polish player who performed third best last week abroad was former international guard David Logan (185-82, college: Indianapolis, currently plays in Euroleague). Logan contributed to a Maccabi T-A's victory against the seventh-ranked Fenerbahce Ulker (2-8) 94-85 in the Euroleague on Thursday night. He recorded 15 points and added 3 passes in 34 minutes. Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv (5-5) is placed fifth in group F. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game is very crucial. It's Logan's first season with the team. This year Logan has relatively solid stats: 10.5ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.1apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 56.9%(33-58), 3FGP: 46.2%(43-93) in the 20 games. He is a naturalized American. Logan played for the Polish national team four years ago. He used to play for WTK Anwil Wloclawek in Polish league.

   #4. An experienced center Michal Hlebowicki (204-76, currently plays in Latvia) led Jekabpils to a victory over the sixth-ranked Jurmala (11-15) 88-84 in the Latvian LBL last Wednesday. He was MVP of the game. Hlebowicki had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 10 rebounds in 25 minutes. BK Jekabpils (17-9) is placed first in the LBL. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This year Hlebowicki's overall stats are: 9.5ppg and 6.8rpg in the 25 games. He used to play for the Polish national team back in 2002.

International forward Michal Ignerski (207-80, agency: Stanley International, college: Mississippi St., currently plays in Italy) helped Banco di Sardegna Sassari edge the ninth-ranked Enel Brindisi (10-11) 95-93 in the Italian SerieA on Sunday night. Ignerski scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Banco di Sardegna Sassari (17-4) is placed second in the SerieA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Ignerski has reliable stats this season: 13.0ppg and 5.3rpg. He plays currently for the Polish national team.

   #6. Center Marcin Gortat (211-84, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Phoenix Suns (21-41) in their game against the Toronto Raptors (24-39) in the NBA. International power forward Jakub Wojciechowski (210-90, currently plays in Italy) was the main contributor in Torino's victory against the ninth-ranked Liomatic Viola Reggio Calabria (12-12) crushing them 80-59 in the Italian Nazionale A (third division) last Sunday. He was the best player in that game. Wojciechowski recorded a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 12 rebounds. PMS Torino (22-4) is placed first in the Nazionale A. This season Wojciechowski has very high stats. He averages: 15.7ppg, 9.1rpg and 1.1spg. Wojciechowski is also Polish national team player.

   #8. Forward Karol Gruszecki (196-89, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to secure a victory for the Texas Arlington (11-6) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Texas Arlington was crushed 84-55 in Denver, CO by the Denver University. Gruszecki scored 16 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 33 minutes. They ended the series of six consecutive victories. His team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. Gruszecki has very impressive stats this year: 15.7ppg, 9.1rpg and 1.1spg in the 26 games. He used to play for the Polish U20 national team back in 2008.

   #9. International center Szymon Szewczyk (209-82, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Umana Venezia (11-10) in their game against Sutor Montegranaro (7-14) in the Italian SerieA. Szewczyk scored 5 points, had 9 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 27 minutes. Umana Venezia was crushed 88-64 in Montegranaro by the lower-ranked (#13) Sutor. Szewczyk's stats this year are: 11.2ppg and 5.6rpg in the 19 games. He is also in the roster of the Polish national team.

Forward Olek Czyz (200-90, agency: Priority Sports, college: Nevada, currently plays in Italy) managed to help Acea Virtus Roma in a victory against the 11th-ranked Vanoli Cremona (8-13) 79-71 in the Italian SerieA in Sunday night's game. Czyz scored 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 10 minutes. Acea Virtus Roma (14-7) is placed fourth in the SerieA. This year Czyz's total stats are: 6.5ppg and 4.6rpg in the 21 games. He is a former U20 international player as three years ago he still played for the Polish national team.

   #11. U20 international forward Tomasz Gielo (206-93, currently studies in the States) helped Liberty win their game against the Coastal Carolina College 78-61 in the NCAA last Tuesday. Gielo recorded 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Gielo has averaged so far 6.5ppg and 4.6rpg. He plays currently for the Polish U20 national team.

   #12. Former U18 international center Pawel Mroz (215-84, currently plays in Czech Republic), who plays in the Czech Republic NBL couldn't help Basketbal Svitavy (9-20) in their last game. Despite Mroz's very good performance the sixth-placed Basketbal Svitavy lost 75-85 in Chomutov to the higher-ranked (#3) Levharti in the Group A2. He was the second best scorer with 16 points. Mroz also added 4 rebounds in 31 minutes. Mroz averaged so far 15.0ppg and 6.6rpg in the 27 games. He used to play for the Polish U18 national team back in 2002.

   #13. Former U18 international center Szymon Lukasiak (208-87, college: Jacksonville, currently plays in Sweden), who plays in the Swedish Basketligan couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Nassjo (7-26) in their last game on Friday. Despite Lukasiak's very good performance Nassjo was crushed 90-69 in Stockholm by the higher-ranked White Eagles (#10). He was the second best scorer with 21 points. Lukasiak also added 4 rebounds. Lukasiak's stats this season are: 10.1ppg and 5.1rpg. He used to play for the Polish U18 national team eight years ago.

   #14. International center Przemyslaw Karnowski (216-93, is currently at the American university) helped Gonzaga win their game against the University of Portland crushing them 81-52 in the NCAA last Saturday. Karnowski recorded 8 points in only 12 minutes. Karnowski averaged so far 10.1ppg and 5.1rpg in the 32 games. He plays currently for the Polish national team.

   #15. International point guard Robert Skibniewski (183-83, currently plays in Slovakia) couldn't help Inter Bratislava in their game against Nitra in the Slovakian Extraliga. Skibniewski scored 5 points and added 5 assists. It was his first game for Inter Bratislava this season. His team was defeated 97-86. Skibniewski is also in the roster of the Polish national team.

   #1. Gal Mekel (190-PG-88, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Israel) was the major contributor in a Maccabi Haifa's victory against the seventh-ranked Bnei Hasharon (8-11) 89-82 in the Israeli Winner League in Sunday night's game. Mekel recorded 24 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Maccabi Bazan Haifa (12-7) is placed third in the Winner League. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Mekel is the league's best passer. He has very reliable stats this season: 14.2ppg, 2.5rpg, 5.8apg and 1.4spg. Mekel has a dual citizenship: Polish and Israeli.

   #2. Vitaliy Kovalenko (203-F-84, currently plays in Ukraine) contributed to Khimik's victory against the 12th-ranked Dnipro (12-21) 81-72 in the Ukrainian Superleague in Thursday night's game. Kovalenko recorded 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Khimik-OPZ Yuzny (20-13) is placed fifth in the Superleague. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Kovalenko's total stats this season are: 8.1ppg, 3.1rpg and 1.1apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Polish and Ukrainian.

   #3. Konrad Wysocki (201-F-82, agency: Pro One Sports, college: Princeton, currently plays in Germany) contributed to an easy victory against the seventh-ranked Artland Dragons (13-12) 84-68 in the German BBL on Saturday night. Wysocki recorded 7 points. EWE Baskets Oldenburg (16-7) is placed third in the BBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Wysocki's total stats this season are: 7.3ppg and 3.1rpg. He has both Polish and German nationalities.

   #4. Robert Lewandowski (208-F-89, college: Texas Tech, currently plays in Czech Republic), who plays in the Czech Republic NBL could not help BK Usti nad Labem (7-22) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Lewandowski's good performance BK Usti nad Labem (#7) was defeated 95-81 on the road by the leading Levice in the Group A2. He scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Lewandowski averaged so far 13.3ppg, 5.6rpg and 1.8apg. He is a naturalized American. Lewandowski used to play for PGE Turow Zgorzelec in Polish league.

   #5. Marek Olesinski (203-F, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to help the Air Force (7-8) in their game against the San Diego State University (9-6) in the NCAA. He scored 7 points in 19 minutes. The Air Force lost 51-58 in San Diego, CA to the San Diego State University. Olesinski's team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. Olesinski averaged so far 13.3ppg, 5.6rpg and 1.8apg in the 14 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Strangely Olesinski has never played in Poland.

   #6. Patrick Wischnewski (191-G-87, currently plays in Germany) contributed to an easy victory against the 11th-ranked ifm Baskets Konstanz crushing them 95-73 in the German ProB (third division) last Saturday. He scored 10 points. Wischnewski averaged so far 14.3ppg, 1.4rpg and 1.1spg. He also holds two passports: German and Polish. Despite Wischnewski's Polish nationality, he previously played for the German U16 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Polish team.

   #7. Dominik Malinowski (198-SG-91, currently plays in Germany) was not able to secure a victory for SG Schwelmer Baskets in their game against Oldenburg in the German ProB (third division).
