We bring you last week's top performances from Poles who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Maciej Lampe (211-85, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Spain. He could not help Caja Laboral (6-6) in their last game. Despite Lampe's very good performance the sixth-placed Caja Laboral lost 74-83 on the road to the leading Regal FC Barcelona in the group F of Euroleague. He was the top scorer with 21 points. Lampe also added 6 rebounds in 30 minutes on the court. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be critical. Lampe is currently ninth on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (fifth place). He has very reliable stats this year: 13.5ppg, 6.0rpg, 2FGP: 49.3%, 3FGP: 30.8% and FT: 78.2% in the 22 games he played so far. Lampe has a dual citizenship: Polish and Swedish. He is currently a member of the Polish senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to former international guard David Logan (185-82, college: Indianapolis, currently plays in Euroleague). Logan led his Israeli team Maccabi T-A to a victory over the closely-ranked Olympiacos (7-5) 73-67 in the Euroleague last Friday. He was MVP of the game. Logan scored 20 points. Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv (7-5) is placed third in group F. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game is very crucial. It's Logan's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 10.7ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.1apg, 2FGP: 58.2%(39-67), 3FGP: 44.9%. Logan is a naturalized American. He played for the Polish national team in 2009. Logan used to play for WTK Anwil Wloclawek in Polish league.

   #3. The Polish player who performed third best last week abroad was an international swingman Thomas Kelati (195-82, agency: Beo Basket, college: Washington St., currently plays in Spain). He contributed to a Valencia Basket's victory against the 11th-ranked Blusens Monbus (12-13) 80-74 in the Spanish ACB on Saturday night. Kelati recorded 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 33 minutes. Valencia Basket (15-10) is placed fifth in the ACB. This year Kelati has relatively solid stats: 11.7ppg, 2.8rpg, 1.6apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 58.3%(28-48), 3FGP: 43.0% and FT: 88.5% in the 17 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Eritrean and Polish. Ex-BOT Turow Zgorzelec player is also a member of the Polish senior national team.

   #4. Center Szymon Szewczyk (209-82, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian SerieA was not able to help Umana Venezia (11-12) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Szewczyk's very good performance Umana Venezia was defeated 74-69 in Roma by the higher-ranked Lottomatica (#3). He was the second best scorer with 18 points. Szewczyk also added 6 rebounds and made 3 blocks. Szewczyk has reliable stats this season: 12.0ppg and 5.5rpg. He is also Polish national team player.

An experienced international forward Michal Ignerski (207-80, agency: Stanley International, college: Mississippi St., currently plays in Italy) helped Banco di Sardegna Sassari edge the closely-ranked Cimberio Varese (18-5) 76-75 in the Italian SerieA on Sunday night. Ignerski scored 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Banco di Sardegna Sassari (18-5) is placed first in the SerieA. Ignerski's stats this season are: 12.7ppg and 5.2rpg. He plays currently for the Polish national team.

Forward Karol Gruszecki (196-89, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Texas Arlington win their game against the The Univ.of Texas - San Antonio (10-8) 69-53 in the NCAA last Friday. Gruszecki scored 19 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. The University of Texas at Arlington has a solid 11-7 conference record this season. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Gruszecki's overall stats this year are: 8.1ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.1apg. He is a former U20 international player as he played for the Polish team five years ago.

Former international center Michal Hlebowicki (204-76, currently plays in Latvia) helped Jekabpils win their game against the seventh-ranked Latvijas Universitate (13-17) 72-67 in the Latvian LBL on Wednesday night. Hlebowicki recorded 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in a mere 19 minutes. BK Jekabpils (18-10) is placed first in the LBL. This year Hlebowicki's overall stats are: 9.6ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.1apg in the 27 games. He used to play for the Polish national team eleven years ago.

Center Pawel Mroz (215-84, currently plays in Czech Republic), who plays in the Czech Republic NBL was not able to secure a victory for Basketbal Svitavy (10-23) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Mroz's very good performance Basketbal Svitavy (#5) was edged 77-75 in Opava by the higher-ranked B&W Opava (#4) in the Group A2. He was the top scorer with 21 points. There are only three games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game will be important. Mroz averaged so far 14.8ppg, 6.4rpg and 1.1apg. He used to play for the Polish U18 national team back in 2002.

Former international center Cezary Trybanski (218-79, currently plays in Lithuania) helped Dzukija win their game against the seventh-ranked Zanavykas (20-14) 66-56 in the Lithuanian NKL (second division) last Thursday. Trybanski recorded 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks. Dzukija Alytus (26-8) is placed second in the NKL. It was his team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. Trybanski belongs to league's best rebounders (ranked #2) and also on the list of best blockers (first place). This season he has very good stats: 12.7ppg, 10.1rpg and 3.2bpg. Trybanski used to play for the Polish national team twelve years ago.

Center Przemyslaw Karnowski (216-93, currently studies in the States) managed to help Gonzaga University in a victory against the Southern University (12-6) 64-58 in the NCAA on Thursday night. He scored only 2 points in 4 minutes on the court. The Gonzaga University has quite an impressive 16-0 conference record this season. So far his team won all sixteen games in the conference. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Karnowski averaged so far 12.7ppg, 10.1rpg and 3.2bpg in the 36 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Polish National Team roster.


The list of other players, who all have Polish passport but never been selected to any of Polish national teams:

   #1. Konrad Wysocki (201-F-82, agency: Pro One Sports, college: Princeton, currently plays in EuroChallenge) led his German team EWE Baskets to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Khimik (3-3) crushing them 100-78 in the EuroChallenge last Tuesday. Wysocki scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group L. EWE Baskets Oldenburg (5-1) is placed first. This year Wysocki's overall stats are: 7.6ppg and 3.8rpg in the 13 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Polish and German.

   #2. Vitaliy Kovalenko (203-F-84, currently plays in Ukraine) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider BC Kyiv (9-28) crushing them 85-65 in the Ukrainian Superleague in Friday night's game. Kovalenko scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 22 minutes. Khimik-OPZ Yuzny (22-13) is placed fifth in the Superleague. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Kovalenko's overall stats are: 8.1ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.1apg in the 35 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Polish and Ukrainian.

   #3. Gal Mekel (190-PG-88, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Israel) managed to help Maccabi Bazan Haifa in a victory against the league outsider Ironi Ashkelon (5-16) 83-69 in the Israeli Winner League last Sunday. Mekel scored 5 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 31 minutes. Maccabi Bazan Haifa (14-7) is placed second in the Winner League. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. Mekel is ranked first on the list of the best passers in the league with 5.6apg. This year he also averages: 13.5ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.3spg in the 15 games. Mekel has both Polish and Israeli nationalities.

   #4. Robert Lewandowski (208-F-89, college: Texas Tech, currently plays in Czech Republic), who plays in the Czech Republic NBL could not help BK Usti nad Labem (9-23) in their last game on Monday. Despite his good performance BK Usti nad Labem (#7) was defeated 64-50 on the road by the second-ranked USK Praha in the Group A2. Lewandowski was the top scorer with 13 points. He also added 8 rebounds. There are only four games left until the end of the Second Stage. Lewandowski averaged so far 13.0ppg, 5.7rpg and 1.6apg. He is a naturalized American. Lewandowski used to play for PGE Turow Zgorzelec in Polish league.

   #5. Patrick Wischnewski (191-G-87, currently plays in Germany) was not able to help Leitershofen (10-12) in their game against SG Schwelmer Baskets (17-5) in the German ProB (third division), despite his good performance in Saturday night's game. He recorded 12 points in 20 minutes. But Leitershofen (#8) was crushed 110-87 in Schwelm by the leading SG er Baskets in the Group South. Wischnewski averaged so far 14.0ppg and 1.5rpg in the 21 games. He also holds two passports: German and Polish. Despite Wischnewski's Polish nationality, he previously played for the German U16 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Polish team.

   #6. Maciej Baginski (195-SF-95, currently plays in Iceland) was not able to secure a victory for Njardvik in their game against Snaefell in the Icelandic Dominos League. Baginski recorded only 4 points. His team was defeated 83-79. Baginski's total stats this season are: 8.1ppg and 3.0rpg. He has dual citizenship: Polish and Icelandic.

   #7. Patryk Bajtus (206-C-91, currently plays in Portugal) couldn't help Barcelos in their game against Ovarense in the Portuguese LPB. Bajtus cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 2 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 23 minutes. His team lost 75-80. This year Bajtus' total stats are: 4.3ppg and 4.3rpg in the 10 games.

Iberostar Tenerife CB Canarias (Liga Endesa) signed 24-year old Polish international swingman Mateusz Ponitka (196-92kg-93). He was about to sign at Zalgiris in Lithuanian LKL league. The last season Ponitka played at Pinar Karsiyaka in Turkish BSL where in 27 games he had 13.7ppg, 4.9rpg, 2.3apg and 1.7spg. He helped them to make it to the Turkish Cup Semifinals.
