Krzysztof
Szubarga
Current season is crucial for the Polish Basketball League at the highest level. After nine years of domination Asseco Prokom Gdynia (earlier Prokom Trefl Sopot), we will probably witness changing of the guard on the basketball Polish throne. The team of the current champion of the country has huge roster problems related to the money crisis and will be able to talk about the great success when it pass first play-off round.

Below is a subjective evaluation of the four main candidates for the title.

1. PGE Turow Zgorzelec

Why Turow?

Because they presenting the most balanced level of all teams trough the entire season. They won the regular season and will have home court advantage until the end of the play-offs. This may be crucial because the PGE team lost only four games in 16 played.

Another very important argument is a very long squad. Scoring points for the entire season was spread evenly over 10 players. Any injury, or a weaker form of one of the key players should not affect the attitude of the entire team what have fundamental meaning in play-off round.

Why not?

Turow has two major problems. The first is the lack of a typical leader in the team. Aligned roster gives huge advantages in the rotation, but in the money time of key games, team may dont have player who will make important shoots. Michal Chylinski (190-PG-86, agency: Interperformances) and Aaron Cel (203-F-87) is not the same level that Hodge, Koszarek (Stelmet), Filip Dylewicz (202-F-80) (Trefl) or Krzysztof Szubarga (182-PG-84) (Anwil).

The second problem is the narrow rotation among Poles (two players with Polish passport must be all the time on the dance floor), limiting to three ( Michal Chylinski, Aaron Cel, Kulig) up to four players. The injury of one of the trio will put the team in an extreme situation.

2. Trefl Sopot

Why Trefl?

Without a doubt Trefl has the best roster of Polish players. Filip Dylewicz is the most efficient player (according eval statistic), Adam Waczynski (199-G/F-89) is the third, important roles has also Marcin Stefanski (200-F-83) and young Michalak. It is true that Marcin Stefanski will return to the game after injury, and is no to know that he will play in first round however, team shouldnt have any problems with rotation of Poles. In the team we can easily distinguished leaders of the team and the role players. Trio Frank Turner (178-PG-88, agency: Court Side, college: Canisius), Adam Waczynski and Filip Dylewicz supported by valuable substitute gives the team a balanced attack in positions 1-4.

Why not?
Trefl has one major problem and that is rotation close to the basket. Team doesnt have a typical post-up center on high level, and furthermore the uncertain return of Marcin Stefanski turnover in positions 4-5 is much narrower. For example in a confrontation with Turow, it can be a significant problem for the team form Sopot.

3.Stelmet Zielona Gora

Why Stelmet?

Because they have MVP of regular season (Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida)), Polish MVP (Lukasz Koszarek (187-PG-84)), and a long list of high-level players to help. In theory is without a doubt the strongest team in the league. Stelmet has best offensive trio (Hodge, Koszarek, Hosley) in the league backed by solid post-up players, strong bench and a decent rotation among Poles.

Why not?

Because a team was built during the season, and hit a surprisingly large fluctuations of the results. Besides, the two best players in the team play a nominal on one position - point guard. Moving Hodge to the position SG does not always work out, because guard feels a lot better with the ball. Stelmet often reminds conglomeration of individuals but not a real team.

Second problem is a defense. Stelmet lost definitely the greatest number of points from all top six teams. It could be seen even in the last game against Turow where they lost 102 points playing on their home court. Without significant improvement in the defense team did not go through the second round.

4. Anwil Wloclawek

Why Anwil?

Because they have best team defense in entire league at the head with Krzysztof Krzysztof Szubarga which was voted the best defender of the league. Anwil Players are able to stop any opponent around 70 points in the game. Whole team can play full court press and generate a large number of opponent turnovers, and as is well known to the defense wins championships. Moreover Arvydas Eitutavicius is back from injury, which give Krzysztof Szubarga necessary minutes on the bench. The best defense is taking the best fast break in the league which should also be a very important asset.

Why not?

There are couple problems. First is the same like in Trefl but on higher level. Anwil got big hole on position C. Seid Hajric (203-F-83) Ruben Boykin (201-F-85, college: N.Arizona) and Nikola Jovanovic (203-C/F-81, agency: BeoExcell) are very good players but they are typically PFs. Team doesnt have enough power and centimeters in the paint.

The second problem is that the team is too dependent on the attitude of Krzysztof Szubarga. When he plays bad team loses, thus limiting his activities is the key to winning with Anwil.

The third problem or maybe a question is Tony Weeden. When Tony play with the team and for the team, Anwil gains a phenomenal shooter who can score series of points. Unfortunately, recently looked like it had not been part of the team and the coach Milia had a lot of concerns about its attitude.

Kenny
Manigault
Manigault number one in Poland for round 28 - 4 days ago
American Swingman Kenny Manigault (196-G/F-91) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for AZS Koszalin, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 28. The 25-year old player had a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, while his team outclassed Siarka (#17, 4-26) with 51-point margin 105-54. The game rather meaningless between the teams, which do not have any influence on top of the standings. AZS Koszalin is placed at 14th position in Polish PLK. To...   [read more]
