The game between third ranked Ovarense (10-5) and sixth ranked Vitoria SC (9-7) was the most important one in the last round on Saturday night. Ovarense was defeated by Vitoria SC in a tough game in Ovarense 77-84. Ovarense trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 24-19 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 77-84 at the end of the game. Vitoria SC forced 19 Ovarense turnovers. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Paulo Cunha (200-80) who had a double-double by scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. American center Dain Swetalla (206-86, college: Augustana, IL) chipped in 24 points and 4 steals. The former international forward Miguel Miranda (205-78, agency: Dynamics Global Management) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds for the hosts. Ovarense's coach Carlos Pinto rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Vitoria SC have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to fifth place. Ovarense at the other side keeps the third position with five games lost. They share it with Academica. Vitoria SC will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Ovarense will play on the road against Fisica in Torres Vedras and is hoping to win this game.
Leader Benfica delivered the fourteenth victory. This time they crushed 7th ranked Barcelos (6-8) 125-52. American guard LaceDarius Dunn (193-87, college: Baylor, agency: Three Eye Sports) orchestrated the victory by scoring 33 points (!!!), 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals (on 11-of-12 shooting from the field). Elvis Evora contributed with 20 points and 6 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. Benfica's coach Carlos Lisboa felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Montenegrin forward Marko Loncovic (200-91) answered with 28 points and 9 rebounds for Barcelos. Benfica have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 14-1 record. Barcelos at the other side keep the seventh position with eight games lost. Benfica will play against Sampaense (#6) in Coimbra in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Barcelos will play at home against Alges and hope to get back on the winning track.

Other games of round 17 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Fisica defeated Galitos-Tley in Torres Vedras 68-61. Alges was beaten by Lusitania at home 73-77. Sampaense were destroyed by CAB Madeira on the opponent's court 103-77.


Galitos-Tley - Fisica 61-68

There was no surprise in Barreiro where 11th ranked Galitos-Tley (2-14) was defeated by ninth ranked Fisica (5-10) 68-61. It looked good early as Galitos-Tley took an 9-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Fisica took control and eventually winning the game that evening by 7 points. Edson Rosario (193-82) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 15 rebounds. Cape Verdean guard Braima Freire (188-82) contributed with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Cape Verdean forward Denis Neves (197-78) answered with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 12 rebounds and American power forward Chris Barnes (205-88, college: Georgia) added 16 points in the effort for Galitos-Tley. Fisica moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Lusitania. Galitos-Tley lost fifth consecutive game. Galitos-Tley at the other side, also newcomer in the league, stay at the bottom position with 14 games lost. Fisica will play against higher ranked Ovarense (#4) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Galitos-Tley will have a break next round.

Alges - Lusitania 73-77

No shocking result in a game when eighth ranked Lusitania (5-10) defeated on the road 10th ranked Alges (2-13) 77-73. The guests were ahead by 13 points but lost the second period ending it with a 5-point deficit before their 25-16 run, which allowed them to win the game. Lusitania had a 28-17 advantage in offensive rebounds. They brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. American forward Durrell Nevels (198-86, college: Cent.Arkansas) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 17 rebounds. Forward Mohamed Camara (196-83) contributed with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. American forward Jamarkus Holt (205, college: Delta St.) answered with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 15 rebounds and guard Daniel Monteiro (182-82) added 16 points in the effort for Alges. Lusitania maintains eighth place with 5-10 record, which they share with Fisica. Alges lost fifth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keep the tenth position with 13 games lost. Lusitania will play against higher ranked Academica (#3) in Coimbra in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Alges will play on the road against Barcelos (#7) and hope to get back on the winning track.

Benfica led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 74 of its points in the paint compared to Barcelos' 36. Benfica forced 24 Barcelos turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 38 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Barcelos' players. American guard Jason Smith (183-83, college: Al.-Huntsville) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 30 points and 10 assists. The former international swingman Fabio Lima (197-88) contributed with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Four CAB Madeira players scored in double figures. Swingman Jorge Sing (192-77) answered with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists and American forward Al Rapier (200-89, college: Stony Brook, agency: Dynamics Global Management) added 20 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Sampaense. CAB Madeira maintains second place with 12-3 record having just two points less than leader Benfica. Sampaense at the other side dropped to the sixth position with seven games lost.
