Getting to know players on trial at Partizan: Nikola Malesevic - Aug 10, 2013

Nikola
Malesevic
Jorge Gutierrez (Mexico), Matias Bortolin (Argentina) and Samuel Deguara (Malta) were on trial at Partizan last summer, but none of them convinced coach Dusko Vujosevic that they deserve to sign contract with Serbian and Adriatic League champions. Five players are on trial these days and it looks like that there are more serious candidates to make Partizan's roster than a year ago. Favourites are certainly two players who graduated from universities in USA - Drazen Zlovaric (206-F-90) (Chattanooga) and Nikola Malesevic (201-F-89) (Rhode Island). As Partizan's fans are asking themselves whether these players have quality to help their team, we searched for answer with people who know everything about them.

Eurobasket.com talked to Dave Ascoli, Editor of Rhody Rampage (http://rhodyrampage.com/) -who has been following the Rhode Island Rams since he was a kid and he has been covering them for two years- about Nikola Malesevic, who averaged 10.3 points (2FG 42.2%, 3FG 32.0%, FT 66.7%), 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists in his senior year with the Rhode Island Rams.

First of all, can you tell us more about Rhode Island basketball program?
Absolutely - the Rhode Island Rams are a team on the rise. While they're currently in the midst of a 14-year NCAA Tournament drought, they have brought in former Wagner head coach Dan Hurley to lead the program. Hurley is entering his second year with the squad and is poised to put together a drastically improved team both this season and beyond. The Rams are currently in Italy as part of a 10-day trip that includes three scrimmages against Italian All-Star teams.

Nikola spent four years with the Rams, how much did he improve? Did he reach level which was expected from him?
As a freshman, Nik's role was a sharp-shooter off the bench who could come in and hit a big three-pointer or two. He made the jump to a regular contributor his sophomore season and was a key part of Rhody's lineup in his final three years with the team. His rebounding certainly improved in those three years, but his scoring stayed pretty level (around 10 points-per-game). URI fans were hoping he could be a 15 point scorer on average, and he certainly showed the ability to become a big-time scorer. Injuries, foul trouble, and inconsistent play kept him from reaching that mark, however.

What was his role in the team, in his senior year?
On a team that certainly had it's struggles, Nik emerged as the team's third-leading scorer and their top rebounder. He was also second on the team in assists and fourth in three-point percentage. He wasn't exactly a go-to guy on offense, but he was able to contribute in a lot of different areas.

Can you analyze Nikola's strengths?
Nik's biggest strength is definitely rebounding. On a team that had three different centers, Malesevic was able to lead the team on the glass despite playing the forward position. His offense was very streaky, but if he gets hot, watch out. Once he gets going, Nik can hit shots from anywhere on the court, and he certainly hit several big three-pointers in his time at Rhode Island.

And his weaknesses?
Besides his streaky offense (which can be frustrating when he goes cold), Nik also has difficulty with foul trouble. He saw his foul totals increase every year at URI, which saw him spending more time on the bench than Rhody fans would have liked. Malesevic could also use some work on his free-throw shooting. While it wasn't too bad (67% last season), it could be better. He's great at sacrificing his body to get to the line, but he definitely has the ability to be closer to an 80% free-throw shooter.

Partizan are former European champions, current Serbian and regional Adriatic champions, they are playing in Euroleague again this season. Do you think that Nikola has what it takes to play pro basketball at highest European level?
As long as Nik has kept in shape and continued to refine his skill set, I think he has the ability. A head-coaching change in his last season at Rhode Island was not the easiest thing for Malesevic to go through, even though it was best for the team as a whole. If he can keep working to bring more consistency to his game, he can contribute almost anywhere the team needs him. His versatility is a welcome addition for any coach.

Finally, if you know him personally, can you tell us something about his personality?
I have never had the opportunity to meet Nik, but Dan Hurley and the coaching staff spoke highly of him in both interviews and tweets. By all accounts, he's a smart, respected gentleman who loves the game of basketball. In his junior year, however, Malesevic punched a wall in the locker room following a loss and broke his hand. He ended up missing a month of the season when the team definitely could have used him. If anything, he's a very intense competitor who hates to lose. If he can channel that energy into something positive he has the ability to really shine.

Thanks Dave!

Whether Nikola Malesevic will convince Dusko Vujosevic that he can help Partizan, it remains to be seen...

Todorovic number one in Serbia for round 1 - 1 day ago
Nemanja Todorovic (205-C/F-91) had an amazing evening in the last round for top-ranked Borac, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 1 (Second Stage). The 25-year old player had a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, while his team beat Dynamic BG (#3, 0-1) 75-64. It allowed Borac to consolidate first place in the Serbian KLS. But it's just the very beginning of the Second Stage and Borac won just one (their first) game. It's too early to say anything as the...   [read more]

Nikola Vujicic gets MVP of the Week award for Serbian 2MLS - 1 day ago
Montenegrin Nikola Vujicic (185-G-89) had an amazing evening in the last round for Jagodina and that's him to receive a Eurobasket.com 2MLS Player of the Week award for round 26. The 27-year old guard had a double-double of 30 points and twelve rebounds, while his team beat Boljevac (6-20) 93-88. The game was not the highest importance and did not have significant influence on top of the standings. Jagodina is placed at 12th position in Serbian 2MLS. The season is in a full swing, so it's...   [read more]
