Goran Dragic's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Slovenians playing currently abroad - Mar 16, 2013

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Slovenian players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is former international point guard Goran Dragic (190-86, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Phoenix Suns (22-44) in their last game. Despite Dragic's very good performance the Phoenix Suns lost 112-121 on the road to the Sacramento Kings. He had a double-double by scoring 17 points and making 16 passes. Dragic also added 4 rebounds and 5 steals in 36 minutes on the court. It was Suns' third consecutive loss in a row. It's Dragic's first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Dragic averages: 14.1ppg, 2.9rpg, 6.9apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 49.6%, 3FGP: 30.8% and FT: 73.4% in the 64 games he played so far. He played for the Slovenian senior national team two years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international power forward Bostjan Nachbar (207-80, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Germany. Nachbar was not able to help the league outsider Brose Baskets Bamberg (0-11) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his very good performance the eighth-placed Brose Baskets Bamberg was edged 89-86 in Istanbul by the leading Anadolu Efes in the group E of Euroleague. Nachbar was the top scorer with 24 points. There are only three games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be critical. Nachbar is currently second on the list of top scorers. This season he has very high stats. Nachbar averages: 16.6ppg, 3.5rpg, 1.2apg, 2FGP: 43.8%, 3FGP: 40.2% and FT: 81.6%. He played for the Slovenian national team in 2010.

   #3. The Slovenian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international power forward Erazem Lorbek (209-84, college: Michigan St., currently plays in Euroleague). Lorbek was the major contributor in a Regal FC Barcelona's victory against the eighth-ranked Besiktas (0-11) crushing them 86-61 in the Euroleague on Friday night. He scored 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in only a mere 13 minutes. Regal FC Barcelona (10-1) is placed first in group F. It was his team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game is very crucial. Lorbek is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Regal FC Barcelona's roster. This season Lorbek's overall stats are: 9.9ppg, 3.5rpg, 2FGP: 55.7%(68-122), 3FGP: 54.2%(13-24) and FT: 71.0% in the 20 games. He played for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #4. Power forward Gasper Vidmar (211-87, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Turkey was not able to secure a victory for the league outsider Besiktas (0-11) in their last game on Friday. Despite Vidmar's very good performance Besiktas (#8) was defeated 83-73 at home by the higher-ranked Caja Laboral (#5) in the group F of Euroleague. He was the top scorer with 18 points. Vidmar also added 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. There are only three games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be important. Vidmar is currently fourth on the league's list of best blockers. His total stats this season are: 9.4ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.2bpg. Vidmar used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2010.

   #5. Former international point guard Beno Udrih (194-82, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA couldn't help the Orlando Magic (18-48) in their last game. Despite his good performance the Orlando Magic was crushed 115-86 in Indianapolis by the Indiana Pacers. Udrih recorded 12 points and added 7 passes in a mere 18 minutes. This year Udrih's total stats are: 7.0ppg, 1.2rpg and 5.2apg in the 11 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team three years ago.

   #6. Forward Marko Milic (201-77, currently plays in Iran) led Mahram to an easy victory against the league leader Petrochimi (17-1) 106-89 in the Iranian Superleague in Wednesday night's game. Milic had a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals in 37 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Mahram Tehran (14-3) is placed third in the Superleague. Milic is currently fourth on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (first place). He has very impressive stats this year: 16.4ppg, 9.0rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1spg in the 11 games. Milic is a former international player as he played for the Slovenian senior team seven years ago.

Former international swingman Zoran Dragic (196-89, currently plays in Spain) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Assignia Manresa (4-21) 80-63 in the Spanish ACB last Sunday. He scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Unicaja Malaga (12-12) is placed tenth in the ACB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Dragic has averaged so far 5.7ppg and 2.6rpg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #8. Center Mirza Begic (217-85, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a Real Madrid's victory against the closely-ranked Caja Laboral (19-5) 100-92 in the Spanish ACB on Sunday night. Begic scored 6 points in only 13 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Real Madrid (23-1) is placed first in the ACB. It was his team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. Begic has averaged so far 5.0ppg and 2.8rpg in the 24 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2011.

   #9. Former international guard Sani Becirovic (196-81, currently plays in Iran) faced previously mentioned Marko Milic in the Iranian Superleague last game. Becirovic couldn't help Petrochimi (17-1) in their game against Mahram (14-3). Despite his very good performance in Wednesday night's game He scored 18 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 6 assists. This season Becirovic has very high stats. He averages: 25.5ppg, 8.0rpg, 6.5apg and 2.5spg. Becirovic used to play for the Slovenian national team three years ago.

   #10. Point guard Aleksandar Capin (186-82, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Adriatic League) couldn't help Radnicki KG (16-9) in their game against KK Zadar (8-16) in the Adriatic League. Despite his very good performance on Saturday night He was the top scorer with 18 points. Capin's team will play only one more game in the Adriatic League Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. Capin is ranked first on the list of the top scorers in the league and also on the list of best passers (first place). This season he has very high stats. Capin averages: 17.5ppg, 2.6rpg, 5.1apg and 1.3spg. He is a former international player as five years ago he still played for the Slovenian senior national team.

   #11. Former international forward Dragisa Drobnjak (200-77, also represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Belgium) couldn't help Base Oostende in their game against Okapi Aalstar in the Belgian Ethias League, despite his very good performance in Friday night's game. Drobnjak scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 26 minutes. But his team lost 77-82. He has averaged so far 9.8ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.6apg in the 16 games. Drobnjak used to play for the Slovenian national team five years ago.

   #12. Former international forward Zeljko Zagorac (204-81, currently plays in Hungary) led Falco-Szova to an easy victory against the seventh-ranked FS Debrecen crushing them 107-57 in the Hungarian A Division last Wednesday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 11 rebounds. Zagorac also added and 3 steals. This season he has very high stats. Zagorac averages: 19.8ppg, 12.0rpg and 1.2spg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2008.

   #13. Former international small forward Emir Preldzic (205-87, another player represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Euroleague) couldn't help Fenerbahce Ulker in their game against Caja Laboral in the Euroleague. Preldzic scored 5 points and added 4 assists in 25 minutes. His team was badly defeated by 20 points 87-67. He has averaged so far 8.5ppg, 2.1rpg and 3.4apg in the 19 games. Preldzic used to play for the Slovenian national team five years ago.

   #14. Former international point guard Jaka Lakovic (186-78, currently plays in Italy) led Air Avellino to a victory against the second-ranked Banco di Sardegna Sassari 86-78 in the Italian SerieA in Sunday night's game. He recorded 12 points and added 9 passes. Lakovic has relatively good stats this season: 14.8ppg, 2.8rpg, 6.4apg and 1.2spg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2011.

   #15. Former U21 international point guard Matej Venta (188-84, currently plays in Czech Republic) couldn't help BK Lions Hradec in their game against Basketbal Svitavy in the Czech Republic NBL, despite his very good performance last Wednesday. Venta was the top scorer with 27 points. He also added 4 assists in 36 minutes. But his team lost 96-102. Venta has very impressive stats this year: 19.3ppg, 5.6rpg and 4.9apg in the 11 games. He used to play for the Slovenian U21 national team eight years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Slovenian passport but never been selected to any of Slovenian national teams:

   #1. Rasid Mahalbasic (211-C-90, currently plays in Poland) led Asseco Prokom Gdynia to a victory over the leader Polpharma (1-0) crushing them 88-64 in the Polish TBL on Friday night. Mahalbasic was MVP of the game. He recorded 18 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Places 1-6. Asseco Prokom Gdynia (1-0) is placed second. Mahalbasic has averaged so far 9.0ppg and 5.3rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Austrian and Slovenian.

   #2. Experienced Jure Balazic (204-F-80, currently plays in Turkey) was the main contributor in Erdemir's victory against one of league's weakest teams Antalya (5-17) crushing them 77-50 in the Turkish TBL last Saturday. He was MVP of the game. Balazic had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals in 28 minutes. Erdemirspor Eregli (8-13) is placed ninth in the TBL. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. Balazic has relatively good stats this year: 11.6ppg and 5.4rpg in the 20 games he played so far.

   #3. Nejc Strnad (190-PG-83, currently plays in Greece) contributed to a 3-point Ikaros' victory against the 12th-ranked Kavala (5-15) 76-73 in the Greek A1 in Saturday night's game. Strnad scored 10 points and added 4 passes in 22 minutes. Ikaros Kallitheas (9-11) is placed eighth in the A1. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Strnad averages only 3.5ppg in the 19 games.

   #4. Damir Zeleznik (185-G-80, currently plays in Austria) was the major contributor in a 3-point Xion Dukes' victory against the seventh-ranked Gussing Knights (13-12) 78-75 in the Austrian A Bundesliga last Sunday. He scored 14 points in 21 minutes. Xion Dukes Klosterneuburg (17-8) is placed third in the A Bundesliga. Zeleznik has averaged so far 8.4ppg, 2.7rpg, 3.4apg and 1.1spg in the 23 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenian.

   #5. Uros Benacek (206-C-92, currently plays in Czech Republic), who plays in the Czech Republic NBL could not help BC Kolin (15-13) to beat BK Prostejov (18-10). Benacek scored only 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. BC Kolin (#6) was defeated 84-72 at home by the higher-ranked BK Prostejov (#3) in the Group A1. Benacek has averaged so far 4.0ppg and 1.8rpg.

   #6. Rene Zvan (182-PG-87, currently plays in Slovakia) was not able to help Nitra in their game against Levice in the Slovakian Extraliga. He scored 5 points in 9 minutes. His team was edged 75-73. Zvan has averaged so far 3.7ppg, 1.3rpg and 2.2apg in the 28 games.

   #7. Mladen Loncarevic (209-C/F-91, college: Weatherford JC, currently plays in Bosnia) was not able to secure a victory for KK Radnik Bijeljina in their game against Kakanj in the Bosnia and Herzegovina Division I. He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Loncarevic scored only 3 points. His team was defeated 93-85. Loncarevic has averaged so far 3.6ppg and 2.2rpg. He has both Slovenian and Bosnia and Herzegovina nationalities.

Union Olimpija in talks with Ales Pipan - May 22, 2013

Ales Pipan is close to become the next head coach of Union Olimpija. The team is reportedly in final stage of the talks with the specialist to take over the bridge. Ales Pipan , if appointed, will replace Saso Filipovski . Ales Pipan is currently working with MZT Skopje. He led the team to the FYR Macedonian League Finals where they lead 2-0 against Kozuv. Olimpija-Krka 61:71 Krka triumphs at 2012/2013 season! The team won the Final series against Olimpija 3-1 and clinched the title. The game was mostly controlled by Krka. Un.Olimpija managed to win second period 19-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening.
