Goran Dragic's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Slovenians playing currently abroad - Mar 23, 2013

Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Slovenians who are currently playing abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is former international point guard Goran Dragic (190-86, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Phoenix Suns (23-47) in their last game. Despite Dragic's very good performance the Phoenix Suns lost 79-88 at home to the Washington Wizards. He had a double-double by scoring 18 points and making 11 passes. Dragic also added and 3 steals in 42 minutes on the court. It's Dragic's first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Dragic averages: 14.1ppg, 3.0rpg, 7.1apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 49.3%, 3FGP: 30.8% and FT: 73.5% in the 68 games he played so far. He played for the Slovenian senior national team two years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to former international power forward Erazem Lorbek (209-84, college: Michigan St., currently plays in Euroleague). Lorbek led his Spanish team Regal FC Barcelona to a victory over the sixth-ranked Caja Laboral (6-6) 83-74 in the Euroleague last Thursday. He was MVP of the game. Lorbek scored 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Regal FC Barcelona (11-1) is placed first in group F. It was his team's tenth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be critical. Lorbek is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Regal FC Barcelona's roster. He has relatively good stats this season: 10.1ppg, 3.5rpg, 2FGP: 56.6%(73-129), 3FGP: 53.6%(15-28) and FT: 71.0%. Lorbek played for the Slovenian national team in 2011.

   #3. The Slovenian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Mirza Begic (217-85, currently plays in Euroleague). Begic was not able to help Real Madrid (9-3) in their game against Panathinaikos (8-4) in the Euroleague. He scored 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. But the second-placed Real Madrid was edged 74-73 on their home court in Madrid by the lower-ranked Panathinaikos (#4) in the group E of Euroleague. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game is very crucial. Begic's overall stats this season are: 4.9ppg, 3.2rpg, 2FGP: 57.1%(44-77) and FT: 66.7%. He has a dual citizenship: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenian. Former Triglav Kranj starter played for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #4. Point guard Beno Udrih (194-82, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA was not able to secure a victory for the Orlando Magic (18-52) in their last game. Despite Udrih's good performance the Orlando Magic lost 94-106 on the road to the New York Knicks. He recorded 13 points and added 8 passes in 24 minutes. It was Magic's sixth consecutive loss in a row. This year Udrih has relatively solid stats: 8.0ppg, 1.5rpg and 4.9apg in the 15 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2010.

   #5. Former international swingman Zoran Dragic (196-89, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Spain couldn't help Unicaja Malaga (6-6) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Dragic's good performance Unicaja Malaga (#5) was defeated 70-66 in Moscow by the leading CSKA in the group E of Euroleague. He scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be important. Dragic's overall stats this season are: 4.7ppg and 3.2rpg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

Small forward Emir Preldzic (205-87, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to a Fenerbahce Ulker's victory against the 13th-ranked Turk Telekom (7-16) 90-80 in the Turkish TBL in Sunday night's game. Preldzic recorded 10 points and added 6 passes in 23 minutes. Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul (19-3) is placed first in the TBL. Preldzic has been at the team for six years. He is currently fifth on the list of best passers with 4.6apg. Preldzic also averaged so far 8.9ppg and 3.8rpg in the 18 games. He is a former international player as he played for the Slovenian senior team five years ago.

   #7. Former international power forward Gasper Vidmar (211-87, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Turkey couldn't help Besiktas (1-11) in their last game on Friday. Despite Vidmar's good performance Besiktas (#8) was crushed 86-61 in Barcelona by the leading Regal FC in the group F of Euroleague. He was the second best scorer with 13 points. Vidmar also added 5 rebounds. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be extremely important. Vidmar's overall stats this season are: 9.3ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.1bpg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team three years ago.

   #8. Forward Marko Milic (201-77, currently plays in Iran), who plays in the Iranian Superleague couldn't help Mahram (14-3) in their last game. Despite Milic's good performance Mahram lost 74-88 in Bandar Imam to the leading Petrochimi. He had a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 19 rebounds. Milic also added 3 assists in 31 minutes. Milic is currently fourth on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (first place). He has very impressive stats this year: 16.4ppg, 9.0rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1spg in the 11 games. Milic used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2006.

   #9. Former international forward Dragisa Drobnjak (200-77, also represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Belgium) was the main contributor in a Base Oostende's victory against the league outsider VOO Verviers-Pepinster (4-18) crushing them 87-67 in the Belgian Ethias League in Saturday night's game. He was the best player in that game. Drobnjak recorded 17 points and added 3 passes. Telenet Oostende (15-7) is placed first in the Ethias League. Drobnjak has reliable stats this season: 10.2ppg, 4.2rpg and 1.7apg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team five years ago.

   #10. Power forward Bostjan Nachbar (207-80, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Germany couldn't help the league outsider Brose Baskets Bamberg (0-12) in their last game. Despite Nachbar's good performance Brose Baskets Bamberg (#8) was edged 75-72 in Berlin by the higher-ranked (#7) ALBA in the group E of Euroleague. He scored 11 points in 24 minutes. So far Brose Baskets Bamberg lost all twelve games in the Top 16. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. Nachbar belongs to league's top scorers and is ranked #3 with 16.3ppg. This year he also averages: 3.4rpg and 1.1apg in the 21 games. Nachbar is a former international player as three years ago he still played for the Slovenian senior national team.

   #11. Former U16 international center Jusuf Nurkic (212-94, currently plays in Adriatic League), who plays in Croatia couldn't help KK Zadar (8-17) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance the bottom-ranked KK Zadar was defeated 90-79 on the opponent's court by the higher-ranked Szolnok (#12). Nurkic recorded 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. His overall stats this season are: 2.9ppg and 1.9rpg. Nurkic used to play for the Slovenian U16 national team three years ago.

   #12. Former U21 international point guard Matej Venta (188-84, currently plays in Czech Republic) couldn't help BK Lions Hradec in their game against USK Praha in the Czech Republic NBL, despite his very good performance in Wednesday night's game. He was the second best scorer with 21 points. Venta also added 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 33 minutes. But his team lost 87-99. He has very impressive stats this year: 19.4ppg, 5.7rpg and 4.9apg in the 12 games. Venta used to play for the Slovenian U21 national team back in 2005.

   #13. Former international power forward Uros Slokar (210-83, currently plays in Spain) helped G.Canaria 2014 win their game against the 15th-ranked Cajasol 66-49 in the Spanish ACB last Sunday. He recorded 6 points. Slokar's overall stats this season are: 4.5ppg and 2.6rpg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #14. Former international guard Sani Becirovic (196-81, currently plays in Iran) faced previously mentioned Marko Milic in the Iranian Superleague last game. Becirovic helped Petrochimi win their game against the closely-ranked Mahram 88-74. He scored 8 points, made 4 passes and 3 steals in 30 minutes. Becirovic has very impressive stats this year: 25.5ppg, 8.0rpg, 6.5apg and 2.5spg in the two games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2010.

   #15. Former international power forward Goran Jurak (203-77, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Angelico Biella in their game against Air Avellino in the Italian SerieA. Jurak scored 9 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 4 assists. His team was defeated 77-72. Jurak's overall stats this season are: 8.0ppg, 5.1rpg and 1.3spg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team seven years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Slovenian passport but never been selected to any of Slovenian national teams:

   #1. Rasid Mahalbasic (211-C-90, currently plays in Poland), who plays in the Polish TBL could not help Asseco Prokom Gdynia (16-9) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the fourth-placed Asseco Prokom Gdynia lost 68-82 on the road to the second-ranked PGE Turow in the Places 1-6 group. Mahalbasic was the top scorer with 18 points. He also added 9 rebounds in 21 minutes. This year Mahalbasic's overall stats are: 9.4ppg and 5.5rpg in the 25 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Austrian and Slovenian.

   #2. Nejc Strnad (190-PG-83, currently plays in Greece) contributed to a 3-point Ikaros' victory against one of league's weakest teams Kavala (5-16) 76-73 in the Greek A1 on Saturday night. Strnad scored 10 points and added 4 passes. Ikaros Kallitheas (10-11) is placed sixth in the A1. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This season Strnad averages only 3.6ppg.

   #3. Experienced Damir Zeleznik (185-G-80, currently plays in Austria), who plays in the Austrian A Bundesliga was not able to help Xion Dukes (18-9) in their last game on Monday. Despite his good performance Xion Dukes was edged 82-81 in Gussing by the lower-ranked Knights (#7). Zeleznik was the second best scorer with 14 points. He also added 5 steals. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. Zeleznik's overall stats this season are: 8.6ppg, 2.5rpg, 3.3apg and 1.2spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenian.

   #4. Uros Benacek (206-C-92, currently plays in Czech Republic) contributed to a BC Kolin's victory against the third-ranked BK Pardubice (18-11) 88-82 in the Czech Republic NBL on Saturday night. Benacek scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. BC Kolin (17-13) is placed fifth in Group A1. There are only four games left until the end of the Second Stage. Benacek's overall stats this season are: 4.3ppg and 2.0rpg.

   #5. Jure Balazic (204-F-80, currently plays in Turkey) managed to help Erdemirspor Eregli in a victory against the closely-ranked Aliaga (8-15) 72-66 in the Turkish TBL in Sunday night's game. He recorded only 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 36 minutes. Erdemirspor Eregli (9-13) is placed ninth in the TBL. Balazic's stats this year are: 11.2ppg and 5.3rpg in the 21 games.

   #6. Rene Zvan (182-PG-87, currently plays in Slovakia) was not able to secure a victory for Nitra in their game against Levice in the Slovakian Extraliga. He scored 5 points. His team was edged 75-73. Zvan's overall stats this season are: 3.7ppg, 1.3rpg and 2.2apg.

   #7. Marko Milicevic (204-F-82, currently plays in Greece) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Ikaroi Serron in their game against Koroivos in the Greek A2 (second division). He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Milicevic scored only 2 points. His team was edged 65-63. Milicevic's overall stats this season are: 7.8ppg and 4.0rpg. He has both Serbian and Slovenian nationalities.
