Goran Dragic's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Slovenians playing currently abroad - Mar 30, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Slovenians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is former international point guard Goran Dragic (190-86, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Phoenix Suns (23-50) in their last game. Despite Dragic's very good performance the Phoenix Suns were edged 102-100 at home by the Brooklyn Nets. He had a double-double by scoring 31 points and making 12 passes. Dragic also added 9 rebounds in 38 minutes on the court. It was Suns' fifth consecutive loss in a row. It's Dragic's first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Dragic averages: 14.4ppg, 3.1rpg, 7.2apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 49.5%, 3FGP: 30.8% and FT: 73.9% in the 69 games he played so far. He played for the Slovenian senior national team two years ago.

Mirza Begic

   #2. Second place goes to former international center Mirza Begic (217-85, currently plays in Spain). Begic led Real Madrid to a victory over the seventh-ranked CAI Zaragoza (14-12) 84-75 in the Spanish ACB last Sunday. He was MVP of the game. Begic scored 20 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Real Madrid (24-2) is placed first in the ACB. Begic's overall stats this season are: 5.5ppg, 2.9rpg, 2FGP: 57.9%(55-95) and FT: 78.0%. He has a dual citizenship: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenian. Former Triglav Kranj starter played for the Slovenian national team in 2011.

   #3. The Slovenian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international power forward Erazem Lorbek (209-84, college: Michigan St., currently plays in Spain). Lorbek contributed to an easy victory against the 15th-ranked Cajasol (9-17) 91-72 in the Spanish ACB in Saturday night's game. He scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Regal FC Barcelona (17-9) is placed third in the ACB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Lorbek is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Regal FC Barcelona's roster. Lorbek's overall stats this season are: 10.0ppg, 3.3rpg, 2FGP: 59.3%(83-140), 3FGP: 27.5% and FT: 76.6%. He played for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #4. Point guard Beno Udrih (194-82, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA was not able to help the Orlando Magic (19-54) in their last game. Despite Udrih's good performance the Orlando Magic lost 89-97 on the road to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He scored 13 points and added 5 passes in 36 minutes. It was Magic's eighth consecutive loss in a row. Udrih has relatively good stats this year: 8.1ppg, 1.7rpg and 5.1apg in the 18 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2010.

Former international small forward Emir Preldzic (205-87, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Euroleague) was not able to secure a victory for Fenerbahce Ulker (2-11) in their game against Olympiacos (8-5) in the Euroleague. Preldzic recorded 6 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists. The seventh-placed Fenerbahce Ulker was defeated 78-73 in Athens by the higher-ranked Olympiacos (#3) in the group F of Euroleague. It was Fenerbahce Ulker's sixth consecutive loss in a row. His team will play only one more game in the Euroleague Top 16. And that game will be critical. Preldzic has been at the team for six years. Preldzic's overall stats this season are: 8.3ppg, 2.1rpg and 3.5apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Slovenian and Turkish. Preldzic used to play for the Slovenian national team five years ago.

Center Jusuf Nurkic (212-94, currently plays in Adriatic League) was the major contributor in a KK Zadar's victory against the league outsider KK Split (8-18) 85-68 in the Adriatic League in Sunday night's game. He scored 14 points in only a mere 12 minutes. KK Zadar (9-17) is placed 12th in the Adriatic League. The Regular Season already ended in the Adriatic League. This year Nurkic's overall stats are: 4.1ppg and 2.0rpg in the nine games. He is a former U16 international player as he played for the Slovenian team three years ago.

Former international power forward Bostjan Nachbar (207-80, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Germany couldn't help the league outsider Brose Baskets Bamberg (0-13) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Nachbar's good performance Brose Baskets Bamberg (#8) was crushed 82-60 in Athens by the higher-ranked Panathinaikos (#3) in the group E of Euroleague. He was the top scorer with 14 points. Nachbar's team will play only one more game in the Euroleague Top 16. And now that game is very crucial. Nachbar is currently third on the list of top scorers. This season he has very high stats. Nachbar averages: 16.2ppg, 3.4rpg and 1.1apg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team three years ago.

   #8. Forward Dragisa Drobnjak (200-77, also represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Belgium) was the main contributor in a Base Oostende's victory against the league outsider VOO Verviers-Pepinster (4-18) crushing them 87-67 in the Belgian Ethias League on Saturday night. Drobnjak was the best player in that game. He recorded 17 points and added 3 passes in a mere 19 minutes. Telenet Oostende (15-7) is placed first in the Ethias League. This year Drobnjak has relatively solid stats: 10.2ppg, 4.2rpg and 1.7apg in the 17 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2008.

   #9. Former international power forward Uros Slokar (210-83, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help G.Canaria 2014 (15-12) in their game against Blusens Monbus (14-13) in the Spanish ACB. Slokar scored 9 points, had 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists. But G.Canaria 2014 was edged 72-70 on their home court in Las Palmas by the lower-ranked Blusens Monbus (#8). Slokar's total stats this season are: 4.8ppg and 2.9rpg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #10. Center Salih Nuhanovic (208-82, currently plays in Czech Republic) contributed to Levice's victory against the fourth-ranked Levharti Chomutov (13-22) 78-69 in the Czech Republic NBL last Monday. Nuhanovic was the top player that evening. He had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 10 rebounds. Nuhanovic also added 3 blocks and 3 steals in 32 minutes. Astrum Levice (21-15) is placed first in Group A2. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. The Second Stage already ended. Nuhanovic is ranked fifth on the list of the best rebounders in the league and also on the list of best blockers (first place). He has very reliable stats this year: 12.2ppg, 7.8rpg and 1.5bpg in the 35 games. Nuhanovic is a former U20 international player as eleven years ago he still played for the Slovenian national team.

   #11. Former U18 international guard Bojan Krivec (188-87, currently plays in Croatia), who plays in the Croatian A1 couldn't help Kvarner 2010 in their last game on Wednesday. Despite his good performance Kvarner 2010 (#5) was edged 86-84 on their home court in Rijeka by the leading Cibona in the Places 1-8 group. Krivec recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and making 10 passes. He also added and 5 steals. Krivec is currently first on the list of best passers and also on the list of most steals (second place). His total stats this season are: 9.6ppg, 2.1rpg, 5.2apg and 1.7spg. Krivec used to play for the Slovenian U18 national team eight years ago.

   #12. Former international shooting guard Sasha Vujacic (201-84, currently plays in Euroleague) couldn't help Anadolu Efes in their game against Unicaja Malaga in the Euroleague. He recorded 5 points in 18 minutes. His team lost 64-70. Vujacic has reliable stats this year: 10.8ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.1apg in the 19 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2009.

   #13. Former international point guard Aleksandar Capin (186-82, another player represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Serbia) contributed to an easy victory against the fifth-ranked Konstantin 90-73 in the Serbian A League last Saturday. Capin recorded 11 points, 7 assists and 3 steals. It was his first game for Radnicki KG this season. He used to play for the Slovenian national team five years ago.

   #14. Former international power forward Gasper Vidmar (211-87, currently plays in Euroleague) contributed to a 2-point Besiktas' victory against the fourth-ranked Montepaschi Siena 72-70 in the Euroleague on Friday night. Vidmar scored 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 23 minutes. This year his total stats are: 9.1ppg, 5.2rpg and 1.1bpg in the 21 games. Vidmar used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2010.

   #15. Former international swingman Zoran Dragic (196-89, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Unicaja Malaga in their game against UCAM Murcia in the Spanish ACB. He scored 6 points in 28 minutes. His team lost 68-76. Dragic has averaged so far 5.6ppg and 2.6rpg in the 25 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Slovenian passport but never been selected to any of Slovenian national teams:

   #1. Rasid Mahalbasic (211-C-90, currently plays in Poland) was the major contributor in an Asseco Prokom Gdynia's victory against the fifth-ranked Anwil (17-10) 84-72 in the Polish TBL on Saturday night. Mahalbasic had a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 15 rebounds. He also added 4 assists and 3 steals in 35 minutes. Asseco Prokom Gdynia (17-10) is placed fourth in Places 1-6 group. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. This year Mahalbasic's overall stats are: 9.9ppg and 6.0rpg in the 27 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Austrian and Slovenian.

   #2. Experienced Jure Balazic (204-F-80, currently plays in Turkey), who plays in the Turkish TBL could not help Erdemir (9-15) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Erdemir was crushed 90-53 on the road by the lower-ranked Olin Edirne (#14). Balazic was the top scorer with 16 points. Balazic averaged so far 11.3ppg and 5.2rpg.

   #3. Uros Benacek (206-C-92, currently plays in Czech Republic) contributed to a BC Kolin's victory against the third-ranked BK Pardubice (18-12) 88-82 in the Czech Republic NBL in Saturday night's game. Benacek scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. BC Kolin (18-13) is placed fourth in Group A1. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game will be critical. Benacek has averaged so far 4.1ppg and 2.0rpg.

   #4. Nejc Strnad (190-PG-83, currently plays in Greece) managed to help Ikaros Kallitheas in a victory against the 11th-ranked Kolossos (6-16) 73-69 in the Greek A1 in Saturday night's game. He scored 5 points in 25 minutes. Ikaros Kallitheas (11-11) is placed sixth in the A1. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Strnad averages only 3.4ppg in the 21 games.

   #5. Damir Zeleznik (185-G-80, currently plays in Austria) helped Xion Dukes win their game against the closely-ranked Kapfenberg Bulls (19-9) crushing them 105-75 in the Austrian A Bundesliga last Friday. He scored 8 points in only 13 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Xion Dukes Klosterneuburg (19-9) is placed second in the A Bundesliga. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Zeleznik has averaged so far 8.5ppg, 2.5rpg, 3.2apg and 1.2spg in the 26 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenian.

   #6. Rene Zvan (182-PG-87, currently plays in Slovakia) was not able to help Nitra in their game against Svit in the Slovakian Extraliga. Zvan cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points and added 3 passes in 12 minutes. His team was badly defeated by 20 points 101-81. Zvan has averaged so far 3.5ppg, 1.3rpg and 2.2apg in the 30 games.

   #7. Marko Milicevic (204-F-82, currently plays in Greece) was not able to secure a victory for Ikaroi Serron in their game against Nea Kifisia in the Greek A2 (second division). He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Milicevic recorded only 2 points in 8 minutes on the court. His team was edged 66-63. Milicevic has averaged so far 7.8ppg and 4.0rpg in the 18 games. He has both Serbian and Slovenian nationalities.

American Devin Oliver (204-SF-92) had a great game in the last round for Un.Olimpija and that's him to receive a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 9 (Second Stage). The 24-year old had the game-high 20 points adding nine rebounds and five assists for Un.Olimpija in his team's victory, helping them to edge out Zlatorog (4-5) 88-87. Krka defeted Rogaska 72-68 on road in the game of the Slovenian League Champioship Stage Round 9 to claim home court advantage throughout the playoffs. Rogaska-Krka 68-72: Krka opened the fourth quarter with eight points in a row for a 61-52 lead, the largest margin of the game, with less than five minutes left. Zlatorog's Igor Tratnik out of the season with knee injury - 3 days ago
Igor Tratnik (207-F-89) of Zlatorog will miss several month of action with a knee injury. He got injured during the practice last Friday. Tratnik re-joined Zlatorog last summer and averaging 16.9 points (ranked second), 7.5 rebounds (ranked fourth), 2.0 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per 32 minutes in 29 Slovenian League appearances.
