ACB Round 33: Unicaja Malaga beats G.Canaria 2014 by two after a very close game - May 12, 2013

There will be only one (last) round of the Regular Season in ACB. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with extra overtimes and favorites losing the games.

The most exciting game of round 33 in the ACB took place in Malaga. This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 7th ranked G.Canaria 2014 (18-15) to eighth ranked Unicaja Malaga (18-15) 67-65 in the game for the seventh place. The hosts trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 11-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 67-65. It was a good game for guard Txemi Urtasun (193-84, agency: Interperformances) who led his team to a victory with 19 points. American forward Andy Panko (205-77, college: Lebanon Valley, agency: Beo Basket) contributed with 20 points for the winners. Unicaja Malaga's coach Jasmin Repesa used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American guard Ryan Toolson (193-85, college: Utah Valley) answered with 22 points and 5 rebounds for G.Canaria 2014. Unicaja Malaga have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to seventh place, which they share with defeated G.Canaria 2014. Unicaja Malaga is looking forward to face higher ranked Regal FC Barcelona (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. G.Canaria 2014 will play against Blancos de Rueda (#15) in Valladolid and is hoping to win this game.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Caja Laboral (25-8) against twelfth ranked Asefa Estudiantes (15-18) on Sunday night. Host Caja Laboral was defeated by Asefa Estudiantes in Vitoria 90-80. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Caja Laboral. Uruguayan-Italian guard Jayson Granger (186-89) stepped up and scored 17 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and Kyle Kuric chipped in 25 points. The best for the losing side was Italian-Argentinian Andres Nocioni (199-79) with 27 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Asefa Estudiantes maintains twelfth place with 15-18 record. Caja Laboral at the other side keeps the second position with eight games lost. Asefa Estudiantes will play against higher ranked FIATC Joventut (#11) in Badalona in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Caja Laboral will play on the road against CB Canarias (#10) in Tenerife and hopes to get back on the winning track.
10th ranked CB Canarias (16-17) fell to thirteenth ranked UCAM Murcia (13-20) in overtime by three points 108-111 on Sunday night. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of CB Canarias. Jose Angel Antelo nailed a double-double by scoring 27 points and 16 rebounds for the winning side. Blagota Sekulic came up with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 13 rebounds for CB Canarias in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. UCAM Murcia maintains thirteenth place with 13-20 record. Newly promoted CB Canarias keeps the tenth position with 17 games lost. UCAM Murcia will meet higher ranked CAI Zaragoza (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. CB Canarias will play against the league's second-placed Caja Laboral (#2) where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
The game in Bilbao was also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Valencia Basket (21-12) played at the court of 5th ranked Gescrap BB (19-14). Valencia Basket defeated Gescrap BB 72-61. The best player for the winners was Justin Doellman who scored 12 points and 9 rebounds. Valencia Basket's coach Velimir Perasovic allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Valencia Basket maintains fourth place with 21-12 record. Gescrap BB at the other side dropped to the sixth position with 14 games lost. Valencia Basket's next round opponent will be bottom-ranked Assignia Manresa (#18) at home which should be an easy win for them. Gescrap BB will play against Blusens Monbus (#9) in Santoago de Comp.
The game between 15th ranked Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (11-22) and sixth ranked CAI Zaragoza (20-13) in Madrid on Sunday ended with biggest points difference. Guests from Zaragoza outscored Baloncesto Fuenlabrada 80-57. It was a good game for Pablo Aguilar who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. CAI Zaragoza moved-up to fifth place. Baloncesto Fuenlabrada lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the sixteenth position with 22 games lost. CAI Zaragoza will face UCAM Murcia (#13) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Baloncesto Fuenlabrada will play against Cajasol in Sevilla and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 33 Cajasol beat Assignia M. on the road 92-76. Blancos de R. lost to Blusens M. on its own court 79-93.
The most impressive performance of 33th round was 25 points and 10 rebounds by Marcus Lewis of UCAM Murcia.

No shocking result in a game when sixteenth ranked Cajasol (12-21) beat on the road bottom-ranked Assignia Manresa (6-27) 92-76 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Cajasol. Assignia Manresa was better in fourth quarter 34-27. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Assignia Manresa to just 7 points in third quarter. They outrebounded Assignia Manresa 37-25 including 28 on the defensive glass. Cajasol looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Assignia Manresa was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. 10th ranked CB Canarias (16-17) fell to thirteenth ranked UCAM Murcia (13-20) in overtime by three points 108-111 on Sunday night. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of CB Canarias. The hosts trailed by 2 points after three quarters before their 22-20 charge, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time and get a 3-point victory in overtime. Power forward Jose Angel Antelo (203-87) nailed a double-double by scoring 27 points and 16 rebounds for the winning side and American power forward Marcus Lewis (203-86, college: ORU) accounted for 25 points and 10 rebounds. Montenegrin center Blagota Sekulic (209-82, agency: FCM) came up with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 13 rebounds and Argentinian-Italian point guard Nicolas Richotti (181-86) added 22 points and 6 assists respectively for CB Canarias in the defeat. Five UCAM Murcia and four CB Canarias players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. UCAM Murcia maintains thirteenth place with 13-20 record. Newly promoted CB Canarias keeps the tenth position with 17 games lost. UCAM Murcia will meet higher ranked CAI Zaragoza (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. CB Canarias will play against the league's second-placed Caja Laboral (#2) where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.

Rather expected game when 13th ranked Blancos de Rueda (12-21) lost to tenth ranked Blusens Monbus (17-16) in Valladolid 79-93 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Blusens Monbus. Blancos de Rueda was better in third quarter 24-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Blancos de Rueda 39-28 including 27 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for Tunisian center Salah Mejri (217-86) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 15 rebounds. Canadian-Irish forward Levon Kendall (209-84, college: Pittsburgh) contributed with 13 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Forward Nacho Martin (205-83) answered with 21 points and 7 rebounds and American-Irish forward Ian O'Leary (201-86, college: St.Mary's, CA) added 14 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Blancos de Rueda. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Blusens Monbus moved-up to ninth place. Loser Blancos de Rueda dropped to the fourteenth position with 21 games lost. Blusens Monbus will face higher ranked Gescrap BB (#6) in Bilbao in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Blancos de Rueda will play on the road against G.Canaria 2014 (#7) in Las Palmas.
