LF2 Round 20: Cortegada edges Pabellon Ourense by three points - Mar 16, 2013

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in LF2. There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with derby games and favorites losing the games.

Ninth-ranked Pabellon Ourense (6-12) made lots of trouble for first ranked Cortegada (15-3) on Saturday. The visitors from Vilagarcia Arousa managed to secure only three-point victory 60-57. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 17-10. But Pabellon Ourense won second period 15-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Pabellon Ourense 48-24 including a 16-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was guard Maria Ylenia Manzanares (175-83) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). Senegalese center Amy Syll (195-93) chipped in 10 points and 17 rebounds. Swingman Maria Bolonio (180-85) produced 18 points and 6 rebounds for the hosts. Cortegada have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain first position in Group A with 15-3 record. Pabellon Ourense lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the ninth place with 12 games lost. Cortegada are looking forward to face Universitario de Ferrol (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Pabellon Ourense will play against Maquinaria Ensino (#4) in Lugo and is hoping to prove to their fans that they can break losing series.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Madrid: Real Canoe (#3) and ASEFA Estudiantes (#6). Real Canoe (14-6) won against visiting ASEFA Estudiantes (10-10) 51-39. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of ASEFA Estudiantes. Center Monica Garrido (185-82, agency: Josep and Nicolas) orchestrated the victory by scoring 6 points and 10 rebounds. Awa Doumbia contributed with 15 points for the winners. Guard Elena De Alfredo (170-94) replied with 10 points and 4 assists for ASEFA Estudiantes. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Real Canoe have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain third position in Group B with 14-6 record having just three points less than leader Pais Vasco. ASEFA Estudiantes at the other side keeps the sixth place with ten games lost. They share the position with Gernika. Real Canoe will play against Tenerife (#11) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. ASEFA Estudiantes will play against the league's leader Pais Vasco (#1) in San Sebastian and hopes to get back on the winning track.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Ferrol. Third ranked Universitario de Ferrol faced second-ranked Al-Qazeres. Host Universitario de Ferrol (14-4) defeated guests from Caceres (14-4) 77-72. It ended at the same time the ten-game winning streak of Al-Qazeres. Worth to mention a great performance of Kate Mills who helped to win the game recording 31 points and 5 rebounds. Universitario de Ferrol's coach Lino Lopez used entire bench in such tough game. Jara Salgado responded with 17 points. Universitario de Ferrol moved-up to second place in Group A, which they share with defeated Al-Qazeres. Universitario de Ferrol will meet league's leader Cortegada in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Al-Qazeres will play against Oviedo and hope to secure a win.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Alcobendas. Second ranked Casablanca faced 4th ranked Fundal Alcobendas. Guests from Zaragoza (16-4) defeated host Fundal Alcobendas (12-8) 80-70. The winners were led by Marta Garcia who scored that evening 14 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Casablanca have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain second position in Group B with 16-4 record behind leader Pais Vasco. Fundal Alcobendas at the other side keeps the fourth place with eight games lost. Casablanca's next round opponent will be Segle XXI (#9) in Barcelona and are hoping to win another game. Fundal Alcobendas will play on the road against Las Gaunas (#8) in Logrono.
And finally the game worth to mention about is the one where eighth ranked ADBA (7-11) won against 5th ranked Aros Leon (9-9) on the road by 15 points 75-60 on Saturday evening. The best player for the winners was Anna Boleda who scored 12 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 steals. ADBA maintains eighth position in Group A with 7-11 record. Aros Leon lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with nine games lost. ADBA will face Universidad de Valladolid (#10) at home in the next round. Aros Leon will play against Real Celta Vigo (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Rest of the games of round 20 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
In Group A Ensino defeated Valladolid in Lugo 69-54. Arxil Pontev. was beaten by Real C.Vigo at home 55-59.
In Group B Leganes was destroyed by Pais Vasco on the opponent's court 70-50. Las Rozas unfortunately lost to Orion-GDKO in a home game 49-63. Las Gaunas recorded a loss to Gernika on the road 57-68. Segle XXI defeated Tenerife on its own court 66-52.
The best stats of 20th round was 25 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists by Maria Gomez of Pais Vasco.

Group A
Aros Leon - ADBA 60-75

And finally the game worth to mention about is the one where eighth ranked ADBA (7-11) won against 5th ranked Aros Leon (9-9) on the road by 15 points 75-60 on Saturday evening. The game was mostly controlled by ADBA. Aros Leon was better in fourth quarter 13-11. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Aros Leon to just 7 points in first quarter. It was a great shooting night for ADBA especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 55.6 percentage. The best player for the winners was forward Anna Boleda (181-81) who scored 12 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 steals. Cameroonian forward Amina Njonkou (185-88, college: Arizona) chipped in a double-double by scoring 13 points and 13 rebounds. Five ADBA players scored in double figures. Teresa Lopez Perez produced a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds and Patricia Benet-edo added 10 points and 6 assists respectively for the hosts. ADBA maintains eighth position in Group A with 7-11 record. Aros Leon lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with nine games lost. ADBA will face Universidad de Valladolid (#10) at home in the next round. Aros Leon will play against Real Celta Vigo (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There was no surprise when 10th ranked Universidad de Valladolid (5-13) was defeated at home by fourth ranked Maquinaria Ensino (11-7) 69-54 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Maquinaria Ensino. Universidad de Valladolid was better in fourth quarter 20-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Maquinaria Ensino dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Universidad de Valladolid's 36. Maquinaria Ensino forced 19 Universidad de Valladolid turnovers and outrebounded them 36-23 including 25 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was center Yaiza Garcia (190-88, agency: Regeneracom Sports) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. The former international forward Mireia Navarrete (184-80) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds. Maquinaria Ensino's coach Javier Munoz used an eleven-player rotation saving starting five for next games. point guard Cristina Salinas (162-93) produced 17 points and center Maria Parro (183-85) added 8 points and 10 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Guests from Zaragoza (16-4) defeated host Fundal Alcobendas (12-8) 80-70. The game was mostly controlled by Casablanca. Fundal Alcobendas was better in fourth quarter 25-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Casablanca made 22-of-27 charity shots (81.5 percent) during the game. The winners were led by center Marta Garcia (193-86) who scored that evening 14 points and 7 rebounds and guard Paula Palomares (170-84, agency: Josep and Nicolas) supported her with 18 points and 4 steals. Even 25 points and 7 rebounds by American forward Leslie Knight (184-86) did not help to save the game for Fundal Alcobendas.
