James Mathis
BBC Monthey (LNA) strengthened their roster with addition of 29-year old American power forward James Mathis (200-102kg-84, college: Niagara, agency: Court Side). He played most recently at Hermine Nantes Atlantique in French ProB. In 28 games he recorded very impressive stats: 15.4ppg, 7.7rpg, 3.0apg and 1.6spg last season.
The previous (11-12) season Mathis played at SO Maritime Boulogne (ProB) in France. In 37 games he averaged 10.9ppg, 6.5rpg and 1.3apg that season. The most of previous (10-11) season he spent at Aix-Maurienne (ProB) in French league. In 26 games he averaged 14.5ppg, 9.1rpg (#5 in the league), 2.0apg and 1.8spg. Great season indeed as he was voted to Eurobasket.com All-French ProB 2nd Team. Mathis also played at Namika Lahti (Korisliiga) in Finnish league that season. In 13 games he averaged remarkable 17.1ppg, 9.9rpg (#5 in the league), 1.3apg and 1.3spg.
In 2009-10 season he played at ALM Evreux (ProB) in French league. In 37 games he averaged 13.4ppg, 7.2rpg, 1.8apg and 1.2spg. Mathis' team made it to the Dutch Eredivisie Semifinals in 2007.
He has played also professionally in Holland (Weert).
Mathis attended Niagara University until 2006 and it will be his eighth season as a professional player.
The scouts decsribe him following way: James is the ultimate teamplayer! He was the fifth leading scorer for Niagara University in his senior year while the team of head coach Joe Mihalich did have 5 players averaging in double figures. James is known as a defensive minded bruiser in college. Is a natural power forward who can step-out as well. Has the strength to post up without any question. Has good physical ability, is a nice mid-range shooter and has the ability to move his feet. A beast on the glass at both sides of the floor. Playes with a lot intensity and with a big heart. Likes to beat up his opponents in defense and handles physical contact very well. Prefers to hang in the paint offensively. Frequently garners tips and put-backs. Always anticipating his opponent's misses. Gets to the foul line because of his active inside play. Not a scorer off the dribble on the perimeter and he needs to improve his ballhandling because of that. Has a great feeling for the basket and likes to go to his right hand in offense. has a nice jumphook and positions well on the inside.
